    Question ?

This update is available when i connect my iphone 4 via cable to itunes BUT i would rather do an OTA update on the phone itself. reason being , im led to believe the OTA update is incremental and therefore smaller in size/ quicker
however when i try the OTA route ( settings / general / software update ) my phone tells me ios 5.0 is up to date !

    am i missing something ?

I guess it is still propagating across the various update servers. Give it a couple of hours and see if you can get it then.

Updating OTA now...this short battery life has been really annoying me. Hopefully this will sort it out.

Just updated via OTA. Very impressed with how painless it was.
Only took about 8 mins in total.
It is supposed to fix battery issues, let's hope so

Just a heads up for anyone who plans on jailbreaking their phone, I saw on Redmond Pie that if you want to jailbreak, then don't update to 5.0.1 as it will mean the next jailbreak won't work untethered.

I just checked on my ipad 2 and it said 34.9 mb ?

790mb via itunes, but much reduced in size using OTA as it only downloads the required files

Newbie to iPhones... What does OTA mean?

    Over the air

'Over The Air', as opposed to doing it via the cable connected to iTunes on the PC/Mac.

How do you get it OTA?
I'm going into Settings>General>Software Update but it's telling me my software is up to date? iOS 5.0

    iPhone 4 by the way

    is 5.0 still being signed?

Over the air updates are brilliant and only took about 6 mins, finally got hand gestures for ipad1 too so well happy with that, seems to have fixed an issue I had with safari that kept crashing, don't know if anyone else had that problem

Only took me literally 5 mins, my broadband is blindingly quick tho, so the download was pretty instant.

Hopefully this update gives the battery some more juice...

I felt my iPad1 had slowed down quite a bit with ios5 but it definetly seems much slicker now.

Just in the middle of updating my ip4, 44mb download.

Checking for software updates on my iPad (1st gen), and it says that iOS 5.0 is the latest version and that it's up to date. Anyone else come across that, where your phone updated OTA but your iPad doesn't seem to recognise there's an update available?

Anyone have any observations about whether their battery life is improved? I normally hit 40% by mid afternoon, down 60% from first thing in the morning.

3GS - 39.8 MB over the air so handy size.

No improvement for me on the battery.

Standby of 7 hours an usage of 3 hours 35 mins and I'm at 48%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,684 ✭✭✭waynegalway

Too early to tell what the update will do for my battery, but as a guide I was getting about 4 hours per 10% of battery power. I'd consider my usage normal enough. in 40 hours of battery I'd probably have in total about 5 hours usage, checking mails, 20 mins of calls, browsing, etc. Nothing heavy like 3D games or streaming videos.

I'm happy with that, so if the update makes it even better, then happy days indeed!

Am I right in thinking for OTA updates you have to have your device connected to a power source?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,219 ✭✭✭✭biko

I don't think so, just as long as you have plenty battery. I'm fairly sure it requires a wifi connection though.

You certainly are but you can check for updates without being connected

I didn't for mine anyway. It does give a brief warning to recommend you connect to power but it still updates regardless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,684 ✭✭✭waynegalway

Mine updated without a power source. I'd say it's just that if your battery drained in the middle of the update it could cause a crash.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,239 ✭✭✭Thinkingaboutit

    Battery seems marginally better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,587 ✭✭✭✭guil

I stand corrected about the power source. I presumed from the message that it wouldn't work otherwise

the update was a big regret..

used it from wednesday morning with 60 odd percent and charged yesterday night with 20% left..

Did the update and as of now since the morning i'm at 44%.. someone at Apple should get shot through and through.. how did they manage to make it that much worst??

I even turn off the majority of the feature which was not required before the update..

my advise for anyone who hasn't update on 4s.. DO NOT DO IT IF YOUR PHONE HAD A DECENT PERFORMANCE TO START WITH

Just under 13 hours standby and 2 hours usage, 75% ... And I wasn't having any problems to begin with

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 274 ✭✭macgabhs

If your battery level is less than 50% it will allow you to download the update but will prompt you to connect to a power source before installing. If your battery level is greater than 50% you can install OTA no problem.

Does it require a wifi connection? My IP4 is still saying software up to date when I check via 3G

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

    My battery is running ok

    1,33 Usage
    7,35 Standby
    83%

and I have a location reminder running the whole day

Yip, tried to update the ipad this morning when it was on 3G and wouldn't allow me. It still shows the update but grays out the install button.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,093 ✭✭✭Amtmann

    Usage: 1 hr 56 mins
    Standby: 5 hr 49 mins
    Battery: 71%

This is an improvement. I still would prefer longer battery life, but it's undoubtedly better than it was.

    Yes, it does

    Edit... Already answered.

I'm at 15h15m standby 2h38m usage and at 63% with wifi on 24/7

OK I am now seriously concerned. My battery seems to draining like feck since the update. I need to do a few tests.

It was grand before the update!

There are some reports out there that the battery life is worse after the update.
