Your club's 'worst signings XI'?

Listening to the 5 live football daily, they were talking about how Newcastle were reversing the trend of god-awful signings and made an interesting comment - that fans would have an interesting time picking out their XI of the club's worst acquisitions.

It kind of suggested a little parlor game - can you make up a team of your club's worst signings? Thinking from the start of the PL era as it'd be unworkable otherwise. Here's my shout for Chelsea F.C.

    Bosnich
    Panucci Boulahrouz Bogarde Del Horno
    De Lucas Veron Sidwell Ambrosetti
    Mutu Sutton

My bench is Sheva (just pipped by the cokehead), Glen Johnson, SWP (purely because of the price tag/hype), Scott Parker (more the club's fault than his own) and Neil Sullivan (because, Bosnich aside, we've actually had decent luck with keepers)

Blanc was terrible, absolutely terrible, he was so washed up when he went to Old Trafford, he was a great player in his day but not by 2001. Remember...

I think he was fairly awful when he arrived, all though in fairness he played well in most the european games that season. Just in the league he was so exposed, lets not forget the Spurs match coming from 3 nil down.

2 biggies stand out for me for Leeds:

Roque Junior - massive hype around him when he arrived, own goal and sent off on his debut IIRC and didn't feature much.

Seth Johnson - £7m at the time was a LOT, and he just got injured and was rubbish really

Berbatov? Wasn't he top scorer last season?

For the money he cost, the return hes given and practically no re-sale value, he got my vote for Fergies worst big money signing.

Veron was one of the worst signings United have ever made. £28 million ten years ago. Getting £15 million for him off Chelsea was a great bit of business considering a year later he was back on LOAN in Italy.

He was a great footballer, just not in England.

Downing has only been around for a few months and Carroll the same really.

    Very harsh I think!

Also I know the Aquilani transfer didn't work out but he still did more in the games he was given then others who we signed. He'd be excellent in our team now! :(

Give a long hard look over some of the players we've signed in the last 10-15 years, Downing isn't half as bad as Mark Gonzalez, Nunez or Cheyrou

    Ridiculous call imo

Not saying hes as bad as them but value for money and considering his age, theres definitely similarities between himself and Keane (even though they play in different positions)

We've yet to see his value though - while he has played quite a few games at this stage and I've been critical of his last 3 performances or so, it's still a bit too early to judge him as being worthy of being included in a team like this.

The guy only had three sub appearances for Liverpool, so fair play to anyone who can judge his playing time at Liverpool. If anything he was a bit of a fall guy thanks to the stupid idea of having a joint manager system. Plus he was hardly going to push Michael Owen from the team at that time.

Think people forget Keane scored 7 goals in the 4 months he was at Liverpool.

Granted the fact he was sold for a loss so soon after being bought means the signing was a failure.

Aqualani is number one for me though. Absolute waste - at least we didn't pay Keane's wages when he went back to Spurs and forego a transfer fee.

EDIT: And while we are at it, people are saying don't judge Carroll after 10 months? Why not? He cost double what Keane cost, has scored less goals in the more time and will have a worse resale value if he was sold right now.

I like Johnson. I think we needed him, maybe not for 18m but we needed another wide option for home games where we can't break down weaker opposition.

How he managed to be signed by Liverpool and then Arsenal I will never know.:D

He only played in something like 10 games for Liverpool when cup games are included, but he poxxed a 3 or 4 year stay at Arsenal. Will never forget the first time I saw him play for Liverpool. The ball was passed to him, and he looked at it like it was the first time he saw a ball. Then when he tried to kick it most of us reckoned it was the first time he saw a ball and that the Jimmy Carter at Millwall must have been a different guy.:D

I don't think Carroll should be on the team of worst signings however - 10 calendar months - how many games has he played, he had an injury when he signed and he's only been given a run of games in the last few so putting him on the list of worst signings is fairly premature imo

Forgot Hugo actually although in fairness he was never given a chance and forced to play in midfield etc instead of left.

Considered Cort but I remember one season where he only played like 10 games before going out injured and in those 10 games he had scored 8 goals and was joint top goal scorer at the club at the time...which was ****in ridiculous considering how long he was out injured and it was a few months later.
So he was a good signing but proved to be massively injury prone.
Really pity really as he had the makings of a top goalscorer.

    Agreed.

People have no problem doing it with Keane.

I hope Carroll comes through obviously.

We paid too much for Downing but I don't really have many fears about him being a success for us because he has done it reasonably consistently in recent years.

Sure - if you've got £35 million to burn - Looking at the current Newcastle squad and what they've done with the money, I'd say they've got the better end of the deal.
