I don't like to think of myself as a thanks whore, I'm more of a thanks escort.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,528 ✭✭✭foxyboxer

    It's purpose is to avoid additional posts such as;

    +1

    +1000

    I agree.

    etc clogging up threads.

You thank a post if it (a) makes you laugh - see YLYL or (b) the poster has expressed an opinion/sentiment that you agree with and has saved you the time of posting it yourself.

Or am I completely wrong and it's Ass-Kissery of the highest order? :pac:

Thanks brightens up my otherwise dark life.

It is a beacon of hope in these recessionary times.
It is the totem of ambition that propels me to post, longer, wordier, faster, more regularly with better grammar and spelling. It is the catch-cry of the voiceless to come to AH and express their feelings about tinkers, scummers, the dole, bus **** and poo.

    Thanks is...

Its something people use to give each other a pat on the back.
Boards is full of cliques and Thank whores. I personally don't care about it though, sher whatever makes em happy.

Lets me know if a long post is actually worth reading. Probably wouldn't have bothered getting through yours otherwise. :P

Why did you feel the need to tell us the other forums you're a member of?

I don't mind thanking, it works well on most forums. It just seems on AH every 2nd reply is a smart arse attempt to gamer some thanks.

I feel the opposite and wish another forum im on had it instead of the +1, ITA, what she said etc. especially if you have slow internet. Or if somebody quotes you but you have nothing to say back you can acknowledge that they addressed you with the thanks button. I dont see as this high five, clapping each others backs thing that some people seem to see it as.

Why did you feel the need to 'thank' 10 other posts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,571 ✭✭✭Aoifey!

Don't like it, don't use it.

I think it's much better than tons of "+1" posts.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 264 ✭✭harrythehat

It's pretty much the same thing as 'like' on facebook IMHO!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,130 ✭✭✭Azureus

I like it, its a handy way of acknowledging somebody if they reply to a post you make/a useful way of agreeing with somebody instead of clogging a thread with 'quote/+1'.

As for thanks whoring, people made the typical inane thanks whorey posts to (try) be funny before the thanks button so it doesn't make much of a difference imo.

no i like it forum wouldnt be the same without it imo, but i think they should change it to like a thumb up on face book rather than a ''thanks'' button, but they should add a thumb down too. if they added a thumb up and tumb down option this forum would be really cool!:D

I'd thank everybody including the OP for raising this issue but I'm just not bothered.

I think its detractors wouldn't have a problem with it if they were thanked more, nor when they see any posts they really like and wish to acknowledge this.

I think if you have a thanks button you should have a horse****e button alongside it, that would also help the clogging up of posts!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,473 ✭✭✭R0ot

Just thanked everyone's post as a protest against the thanks system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,207 ✭✭✭The King of Moo

I really don't see why people complain about this.

All of the posts with lots of thanks are by and large good posts that are funny or make a good point in a good way.

Those are my criteria for thanking a post.

It's a nice way to acknowledge someone who makes a good post.

I don't really see the downside.

People often complain about "thanks whoring posts," but when people try to make a glib post and it's not funny, it doesn't get thanked, so they look silly.

If it's a good post, it gets thanks.

Therefore the more thanks I see around the place, the more good posts there are, so I say thank the gods for thanks.

That's grand, but in reality it has turned AH to sh1t, people trying to be smart just to get "thanks" i wouldn't mind but most of the **** posted isn't smart or funny

the unfunny thanks whores cluster****ing AH with their bullsh1t?

I don't really see too much of that, to be honest.

But if it annoys you, here's something that genuinely might help.

If you see a short post shortly after the OP with a few thanks, it might be funny.

But if you see a few short posts without thanks at the start, you know that they're probably failed attempts to be funny and you can just skim over them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

I'll tell ya this for nothing. I would rather see 50 consecutive average and/or somewhat funny posts thanked than see one of those pretentious 'sign offs'.

    Man, I hate them!
