If any of you have had a look at my log recently you might notice that I'm having huge bother staying upright on my bike:D. Its not the cycling that's the problem, and I'm a whiz on the turbo:p its the clipping out. I've actually been too scared to go out on the road this week as I'm tired of falling over and being covered in bruises. I even began to doubt if I could actually do a triathlon because of it (oh and also my useless swimming!) but last night I found a clip on youtube showing how to clip out of the pedals. Tried it out today and wow the difference! I was still a nervous wreck but found it way easier to clip out and now I think with practice I will get my confidence back.

Anyway I thought it would be a good tip to share. Nobody told me the correct way to clip out and I just presumed I was doing it right. Its a livestrong clip.

Sorry I cant do the proper link thing so here is the address

Just adding my name to the first timers list for this year. I'm entered for the sprint in Athy, we'll see where that takes me.
Unlike most tri beginners, I'd consider myself pretty ok swim wise. I haven't cycled a bike in years. I bought one last week(bike to work), I intend taking it out for its maiden voyage this weekend once the wind has died down. Likewise with the running, I'm pretty much starting from scratch.
I can reel off lengths in the pool without too much fuss but I couldn't run more than 1km without needing to stop so I know what I need to work on!
Anyway, looking forward to an interesting year.

Did I miss out on entries? Or is entry for 2012 open yet? Was looking on website but looks like it hasn't opened yet.

Excellent stuff. I'll sort entry when I get home from work.

Are most people who are new to triathlon going for the try a tri or sprint?

My "A" race is pretty much a try-a-try @ 500m/10k/5k, but Im doing it for a bet :)

I'll be doing at least one sprint before it for practice, so I guess my first will be a sprint! (assuming I don't drown :O )

a bit strange to use the longer Sprint format race (750m/20k/5k) as practice for a try-a-tri??

Tri Laois has been confirmed to be on April 21st.

I'll post more when entries are open.

Hope to see a few of you at the race, i'll be on the mic !

see you there...nice early warm up beofre national series really kicks in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,165 ✭✭✭insinkerator

Yeah, you could argue that it doesn't make sense, but the try-a-tri isn't till September, and Im not spending the entire season training, for one event that will be over in less than an hour (hopefully :) ) and leaving everything again till next year. Like the try-a-tri is only my A race because I have money resting on the result :P, I do intend on doing a few sprints this year, and hopefully moving to a Standard next year.

    Thanks you,

it takes a lot of planning with so many people and a lot of work is involved in getting it going.

Except for the DJ. I mentioned last year I wanted Survivor - "Eye of the Tiger" playing. Did I get it? No.

....but the organisers (or race owners;)) are well compensated I'm sure given the numbers racing and the costs of entry.

Cant do Tri Laois no'w because of date change so the North Tipp Sprint is going to be my first triathlon afterall. I like the look of Athy too so will probably sign up for it- we could have a boardsie get together:D

Looks like the club is starting a duathlon series soon -eek they are all so fit and experienced. Still Im going to give it a go- 4 duathlons will be great experience for me when all I've ever done before are road running races.

Was originally thinking ahty for first but have decided to try Limerick out first. Any one heard anything about it? As in; is it all pros? I don't want my poor bike (or self) to be pointed and laughed at!

How is everyone's training going?? Feel like have the swimming and running sorted but my god I'm slow on the bike!!

    Hi Nikki2510

Are you referring to the Joey Hannon? Its a great event and hosted well. Fair play getting the run and swim sorted. Plenty of time to get some time on the saddle between now and April. When you say sorted, though, what do you m:)ean?

Well that's good to hear! Does it usually sell out do you know??

Am training for connamara half so running 20 k a week and feeling comfortable, no record breaking pace mind you but am coping well enough with long runs.

Started swim lessons at end of summer and have totally fallen in love with it. Did 60 lengths X20m the other day and felt fine after it.

Totally freaking bout the bike tho! Have only done 3 cycles so far all about 20k (along side hubby doing his marathon training) and basically just died after! First time on a bike was Xmas day this year and still think I need stablisers! But apartenly that wouldn't go down well at a triathlon?? Even a tri or sprint???

Good job on the swimming. The more comfortable you are with that the better you will feel walking/jogging across to T1. Basically take you time to get you helmet on etc.. once you mount the adrenalin of the race will carry you along. The first 2-3k of the biek sprint course is easy but once you get off the Main road and head towards Cappamore you will be on a drag for about 5 min befroe it levels out. If its windy it can be tough on the way out but once you hit the turnaround point its plain sailing home to T2. You can then enjoy passing people out on the run. I'd advise getting out on the bike every weekendand just like your running, improve the distance you go each time until you are comfortable on the saddle for an hour at least. Perhaps when the hubby turns back for home, continue on for another 5 mins and then catch him before he finishes... etc...

Will be doing first Tri this year. Not sure yet which one, I don't drive so have to co-ordinate with my various taxi drivers :) Will probably opt for one in a pool as first one.

Considering doing one of the Sportsman Duathlons in Dundalk too. Did the Brownlee Challenge last year and would be interested to see if there is much improvement in my times etc. with a bit of actual training under my belt!

    Fingal Sprint @ the NAC?

On in May and last year was very well run.

Actually, if you've joined 3D I don't think you are allowed to compete and are expected to marshall. C'est la vie!

Yeah, think that's the case alright.

Oh well, it will be good to see what the standard is like. Hopefully I might be hooked enough by then that I've bought a wetsuit, so pool/open water won't make much difference.

Anyone done the Sligo Try-a-Tri before?

It's the week before Tri-Laois and is another pool based swim.

(Would trying to do races on consecutive weekends be a bad idea?)

if you're new to the sport then 2 in 7 days would be hard on the body alright...i generally leave at least 2 weeks between races for recovery
