    RTE News Link
A 39-year-old woman has been given a four-year prison sentence for the sexual exploitation of a 15-year-old girl.

Ramilekun Thomas, originally from Nigeria but with an address in Fort Lawn Park in Blanchardstown, pleaded guilty to two counts of using a child for the purposes of sexual exploitation in May 2008.
The schoolgirl was a friend of an acquaintance of Ms Thomas.
The Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that on at least six occasions the girl had sex with a 60-year-old man in his home or in Ms Thomas' home.
She was paid €50 on five occasions and €100 on one occasion.
Most of the money went to Ms Thomas. The girl was given only €10 in total.
The court heard Ms Thomas has three children. She told the court she had problems with drugs and alcohol and she had given sexual favours to the same man to feed her habits.
Judge Pat McCartan said he was satisfied she knew the age of the schoolgirl and knew it was not proper in any circumstances to abuse her in this way.
He said because of the age of the girl, and because of the fact that Ms Thomas was a mother herself and because of the nature of the offences he had to impose an immediate prison sentence.
He sentenced her to four years in prison but suspended the last two to give her some hope of rehabilitation.
However he said there had to be a punitive element to the sentence as a lesson to herself and to anyone else who might be minded to engage in this type of activity.
Ms Thomas will be registered as a sex offender.

    Jesus!
I am from Blanchardstown and I know Fortlawn well. Its shocking what goes on behind closed doors.

    Just read on Examiner:
Judge Patrick McCartan said a tragic subplot to the case was that the man apparently took his own life within three days of the matter coming to garda attention.

2 years for pimping out a child and by the sounds of it the judge didnt suspend the full sentence because he wanted to send out a message to others who may be "minded to engage in this activity".

She wasnt pissing in a doorway ffs she pimped out a child to be raped. Why does the judge not think that warrants punishment ????

Lets look at the facts. It was a woman doing it. if it was a man... you'd bet your ass he'd get more of a sentence

In fact, most likely the 60yo man if was alive probably would of gotten more of a sentence than her.

And we're surprised by yet another ridiculous sentence. (which is 2 years not 4, remember the last 2 are suspended, so it's only 2 years for child rape)

    Human rights my ass.

Exactly the reason why we voted for a pay decrease for them  That judge deserves 4 years in prison for giving that sentence!

    That's horrific! 4 years?? That's nothing ... That's a spin in college like.
Should defiantly have gotten at least twice, if not triple that sentence for what she put that poor child through :(

Maybe, but sentences for serious crimes and violations tend to be too lenient here across the board, no matter what gender.
It's a fair point you raise, but I hope this thread doesn't turn into a "Women have it so much better" one.

ffs Dudess- if it was a man, you agree sentence would be tougher, so female criminals do "have it better"

Its not about women- but the law.... too short a sentence, should be deported.

Should go through her life with a fine tooth comb.

    Fukn ridiculous.
Why isn't there a list of offences with corresponding sentences for each, and the judge has to give this sentence as a minimum but he has the option of increasing it in different circumstances.

Well a minor - not really a child though, in terms of biology and life stage.

What Irish people? The guilty woman is Nigerian and the nationality of the man wasn't given.

    TheIrishTimes:
A WOMAN has been sentenced to four years in jail after she “sold” a schoolgirl to a 64-year-old man who paid €50 to have sex with her.

The man then took his own life three days after the Garda began investigating the allegations.

Remilekun Thomas (39), Fortlawn Park, Blanchardstown, pleaded guilty to two charges of using a child for the purposes of sexual exploitation between May 1st and 31st, 2008.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard the man paid €50 to the girl for full intercourse at least six times at his home and at another location.

Thomas took this money from the teenager each time, only giving €10 back to her on one occasion. On another occasion the man paid €100 which Thomas took from the girl in full.

Det Garda John Small told Patrick McGrath, prosecuting, that the man had admitted meeting the girl a number of times and paying her €50 to €100 each time for sex.

Det Garda Small said that Thomas first met the girl in September 2007 when she showed up at Thomas’s home. She was in third year in secondary school, was dressed in her school uniform and told Thomas she was aged 15.

In May 2008 Thomas was working as a prostitute to the man when he asked her to find another “girl” for him to have sex with. He did not specify anything about her age.

Thomas told the teenager to go and meet the man and said that he would “take care of her”, meaning he would have sex with her. These meetings continued until the girl’s mother found out and alerted gardaí, who arrested Thomas initially on a charge of organising prostitution.

Det Garda Small said there was a “suspicion” that she had used another girl for sexual exploitation.

Kenneth C Fogarty SC, defending, said his client was a Nigerian national who was now living legally in the State and had three children who were born here.

So said woman was a hooker.... But it almost sounds likes shes married to an Irish bloke...
Kenneth C Fogarty SC, defending, said his client was a Nigerian national who was now living legally in the State and had three children who were born here.

And her surname is Thomas? ... Now, i've known a few nigerian people and never heard of anyone with the surname Thomas. In fact, out of every nigerian I met they never had an typical western name.

When the fcuk will politicians start debating this in the Oireachtas and draft legislation to bring in heavier sentencing?

It's needed for practically all crimes.

15 is considered a child in Ireland in the cases of sexual activity, employment, housing, welfare, criminal activity, etc.., so yes a child.

If it was a man he would have gotten about 8 to 10 years I'd say.

Can you imagine if an Irish person went over to Nigeria and do that crime? They wouldn't be getting such a soft punishment, would probably never see daylight again, nor would they walk again after going inside. Send her home.

Is there really anything wrong with this though bar the age difference.
What if the man was 20 ???

15 ain't too far away from 16 which correct me if I'm wrong is the legal age for sex in most European countries ??

He should have shagged her in Spain, it's legal there unless you're 12

Sure just look what age it's legal to have sex at in Spain, that's right it's 13 !!

It's two years, with two suspended. What a lot of people don’t know is that prisoners get an automatic 25% remission of time served in advance, on the basis of your good behavior in prison (which is generally applied regardless of how you behave in prison.)
So between ‘good behavior’ and no doubt early release due to over crowding and how little a threat she presents, I doubt she’ll do more then a year to 18 months.
Automatic remission regardless of the seriousness of the crime committed is one among many reasons why our ‘justice system’ is a joke.

Yes a child legally but people do mix up these things. 15 is young and by no where near the competant enough to make certain decisions in most cases. Physically they are not children luckily nobody has said the guy was a pedophile which would be incorrect.

By no way do I think this was acceptable. If the girl did this consentually it does change matters quite a lot.

I still don't get what people want out of sentencing. Do they want punishment, deterrant or rehabilitation? I personally don't care once it is effective to prevent repeat offenders or any additional burden to the state.

I am pretty sure that increasing sentences doesn't work but what do people want? WOuld you like somebody to come out after 10 years in prision worse than they were going in or spend 2 years in prison and come out unlikely to do anything similar.

I'm no bleeding heart liberal but apparerntly Norway are actually quite good at rehabilitation of prisioners.

See the laws we have over here are a joke and can also be gotten around.

Many people don't know that the biggest trick non-nationals do is to have a kid while here (she has 3) .. kids become Irish citizens and need their mother.

It says she is legal. Doesnt state if its permanent status or not. either way, the kids secure her stay her.
