It's probably integrated into the system/ROM so I'm not sure if it can be removed too easily. I tried to completely reinstall it but it gave me no option to on my htc desire (with leedroid rom).

If you install the official facebook app from the market, it might replace it. And I know you can uninstall the official app.

It will update it, but if you uninstall the updates, it will go back to the original problem of not being able to uninstall it.

The only way to get rid of it is to root your phone. Then get Root Explorer from the market, go to /system/app and delete the Facebook.apk file (I recommend you move it to your SD card instead so you can restore it just in case). Alternatively, you could just install a custom rom
