Training With A Hamstring Injury

    Hi all,

    I am back in the gym after a break of 6ish months. I'm about to begin starting strength but I have a slight tear in my hamstring. I know that a lot of the exercises in Starting Strength are compound exercises and will work my hamstring, so am I better of staying out of the gym until it is fully recovered or should I just target other areas of the body with my workout for the time being?

    From somebody who's had hamstring trouble for a long time - REST

    Don't work it - a normal tear means you're looking at 4-6 weeks - I'd take as much time as possible and don't rush back into training because hamstring issues reoccur and are an absolute nightmare.

    Go to the physio and they'll let you know when it's okay to go back to training, if they're like mine they'll give you a plan to work on the muscle to gradually bring it back to full health.

    Even then with regards to weights - my physio recommended doing 3x30 sets of very light weights on the muscle to help build up stamina in it once again. after that I was told up it to slightly heavier weights doing 3x12 sets.

    Once again, give it time, otherwise you're asking for trouble.

    The answer depends on more factors than anyone here can answer.

    Have you been to a physio, what was their advice?

    How do you know your hamstring is torn?

    What have you done to rehab it/prevent it from reoccurring?

    I haven't been to the physio about it. I am living abroad and the physios that I know of in my area have very little English.. In fact, it's almost impossible to find an actual physio. Most places that advertise it are basically massage parlours... I know that because I looked for 1 when I damaged my knee ligaments a few months ago.

    I'm fairly certain that it's torn because it's not the first time that it has happened to me. I play a lot of sports and based on how it happened I can't see it being anything else. It's not a major tear.. I (stupidly, I admit) played a soccer match on it about a week after it happened.

    In terms of rehab the only things I have been doing are rest, ice, some very light bike work, stretching.
