It stll bugs me that Brazil in 1982 didnt win the Wold Cup.

Thats The question I want to ask. Whats the best team you have seen in your lifetime?

I think its the Brazilian team of 1982 followed by Milan with their trio of Dutch players (guillet, Van Basten & Rikjaard) and the Current Barcelona team.

So if you are 10 or 75 whats the best team you have seen?

BTW I think Milan edge out Barcelona because Milan had a great defence as well.

Only vagley old enough to remeber Brazil in 82, but I'd almost go for Spain over the last few years, Barca now or Man U in the mid to late 90s.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Sunderland 2005/2006, closely followed by Sunderland 2003/2004.

Best Rovers side I've seen is 1993/94. Not lucky old enough to have seen the Four-in-a-Row side.

Cork in 2005 were decent, the treble winning Derry side of 1989 maybe?

I wouldnt disagree with any of that but its tough to put down to one team in one year, its more about smaller era's for me, would add in the Liverpool team circa 77-81. 3 European cups (*when you had to actually be champions to get in) dont lie.

Im old enough to remember that great side (I'm a Cork City supporter). They were the best LOI side by far I have ever seen. A lot of their players ended up in Spain and France if I remember. Its just a pity the LOI season used to start in October back then! No chance in Europe.

I actually think the Cork City side of Kevin Doyle, John O'Flynn, Long, Dan Murray etc was also exceptional and came very close to making a major breakthrough. Great nights at the cross in front of huge crorwds. Sigh.

I seen the great Milan team and the great Liverpool teams but for me Barca are the best ever. This Barca team just owns every team they play on almost every occasion, I don't think I will ever see better. I was too young to know much about the great Bayern team in the early 70s but that team was pretty similar in that they had a host of German World Cup winners in their side. Many older folks I know rave about the Ajax team that came just before that but I don't remember them.

I seen the Rovers side that dominated the 80s on many occasions at Glenmalure Park but we are talking about the best teams ever here so I don't think teams from this country would even come into it. Surely you watched some football on tv when you were a young lad.

    The Sampdoria team of 1991-Lombardo,Mancini,Lombardo,Mickailichenko.
Used love watching them play, wonder would they stop a modern day Barcelona though?

But then again neither would Sunderland 2005/06.

Barcelona have raised the bar to the next level nothing in the past (maybe Brazil 70 team) can match them

The Barcelona team of modern times and Fergie's treble winning United side are the most impressive teams I've seen.

Liverpool in the 80's was a very special team but i don't think anyone can argue Barcelona present are the greatest club side ever.

The best team I've seen I thought the title question was. It's a very short thread otherwise, the current Barcelona so.

Brazil in '82 were class - would surely have won had they not been undone by Rossi.

France '82-'86 were no bad side with Platini, Giresse, Tigana etc.

Liverpool of the 80s and Milan of the 90s were the two best club sides I've seen. Barcelona are well on their way to being the best ever if they keep going for a couple more years.

The current Barca team are smarter, fitter, stronger, faster, more efficient and more cunning than any teams from previous eras.

Its like comparing Michael Phelps to Mark Spitz. Pointless because the current crop will always be better than the past. Its how sport works.

They didn't stop Cruyff's Barca so no chance.

Juventus 1995-1998 were brilliant. Best side in Europe at the time even though they only won the Champions League in one final out of three in a row.

Wasn't around to see the teams of the 80's and before so either Barcelona's current team or Utd's 99 team.

Milan 1988 - 1994, best clubs side ever, that spanking they gave Barca in 94 was the best display of football by any team in a major final ever, they were almost flawless.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,092 ✭✭✭Le King

I don't buy the current crop are better than the last. I haven't seen a better defender than Maldini. I haven't seen a better midfielder than Zidane. I have seen a better striker than Ronaldo.

Barcelona have the best technical players of my lifetime. But not the best team. Best cheats of my lifetime too. They have given the best performance I have ever seen against Madrid in the Nou Camp.

But I'd argue that today their isn't the same competition as there was over the preceeding years before them or maybe I just don't buy into the hype and Spain are largely ****e to watch too.

Maybe I'm just not enjoying football as much. This generation is full of money grabbing tits.

True but you can compare how far ahead of the curve they were for their time.

e.g. how far ahead of everybody was Sacchi's Milan team at the time compared to how far Guardiola's Barcelona is at this moment in time.

I haven't watched much football in the past few years so technically I haven't really seen the current Barcelona team. So using that loophole I'm going to pick the Ajax team that won the 1995 Champion's League.

    van der Sar
    Reizeger
    Blind
    Rijkaard
    F de Boer
    Seedorf
    Finidi George
    Davids
    R de Boer
    Litmanen
    Overmars

(and Kluivert was on the bench!)

They played great football and of those 12 players 8 had started their careers with the club.

I'm old enough to remember the 1982 world cup - it bugs me that they lost that 1/4 final to Italy - it was one of the greatest games of football I've ever seen: it was, in effect, the world cup final of that year.
I'm also old enough to remember Liverpool's great teams of the late 70s and early 80s - I would rate them above that Brazil team.
Milan in the late 80s were great, too but I'd have them below Liverpool and 82's Brazil.
Despite all of these, the best team I've seen is either the current Barcelona team, or the Spanish World Cup winning side of 2010 - If I had to choose, then it has to be lads with Messi.

    EDIT - I'm 39

Easily, Guardiola's Barca or Del Bosque's Spain.

Barca'd probably shade it for me as they have to play billions more games than Spain over a shorter period and still keep going strongly.

I'm too young to remember Milan.

I'd also suggest the Real Madrid side that won 3 CL's in five seasons can't have been that bad but I don't remember how they played.

As for the treble-winning Man U, from what I remember, their biggest asset was their great stamina and determination. They were able to wear teams down but I don't recall them playing any great football, though I was only 10/11 at the time so can't really remember.

EDIT: Best LOI team I saw was Bohs in 2008 when they strolled to the double. They were ruthlessly efficient and clinical and the biggest ever margin between first and second place was justified.

I'm a bit older than OP so here's my best team ever :
    Gary Sprake
    Paul Reaney
    Terry Cooper
    Billy Bremner
    Jack Charlton
    Norman Hunter
    Peter Lorimer
    Allan Clarke
    Mick Jones
    John Giles
    Eddie Gray

    Sub Paul Madeley

    What a team............................

I've been watching football since 89 and the current Barcelona side is the best I've ever seen. They are also a great defensive side despite popular belief. They compress the pitch and hunt the ball in organised packs when not in possession making it virtually impossible for opposition to play their regular game. Granted they can look foolish when they get caught out but that's the price you pay for playing this way.

Beat me to it, the fluidity of that team was frighting, players switching position all the time. Simple, incredibly efficient football

It stll bugs me that Brazil in 1982 didnt win the Wold Cup.

Never saw Brazil 82 myself but they don't seem that great.

Nice long range goals but defending clearly wasn't of much interest to them. Two peno claims and an onside goal dismissed for USSR. It's a lot easier to win games when the ref is constantly calling in your favour.

I guess they eventually got what they deserved vs Italy.

I think the current Barca side is pretty much the best in history. I've always adolised the Milan team in the early 90s but I re-watched various bits of footage from back then and the game has definitely moved on. The standard is higher across the board.

Onside? Clearly and very clearly offside!

I actually taped those Brazilian matchs again when they were repeated on Eurosport about ten years ago. I must watch them again if I can find them in my attic.
