Most Universally Loved Band

Okay, so it seems we've had a recent onslaught of threads, asking what we consider to be the most overrated band/film/whatever which has been proven very divisive. So in a bid to turn the tide of negativity, I simply ask who the majority of this fine board would consider to be the kind of band which is, for the most part at least, the most beloved band ever to have existed, both past and present. As in if there was one band who can be considered to be the closest thing to being beloved by everyone, who would it be?

The ability to form your own opinions and be subjective doesn't make you a 'retard'.

There are many bands here that are... not universally loved bands!!! :pac:

Pretty easy OP, since you ask a specific question - not who our favourite band is, not what band seems over-hyped... but the most universally loved one: bound to be The Beatles.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,980 ✭✭✭Dotrel

I'd agree with the nominations of Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam.

Woah, didn't expect this to kick off so fast.:p

At the rest of bearing the wrath of music lovers, might I suggest Fleetwood Mac. I never hear people dismiss them as bad or anything like that.

Ah, see you're asking two different questions here.

    a) Bands that everyone likes - you can't say The Beatles because people will say they don't like them just to be different or contrary

    b) Bands that people don't hate, but that no-one really loves - like Fleetwood Mac

That's what I thought myself. I see few people dismiss The Beatles off-hand and many see them as having a huge influence on later artists who made it big. It's actually staggering for a band that essentially started out as a boyband with guitars.:p

No no, when I said that, I just meant that I haven't heard a bad word about them. Although if we're going to get technical about it, I reckon they're a band who people would unanimously agree as being a great band. Don't trust me on that though, I haven't done the proper legwork.

With Peter Green they were good, not universally loved.

Elvis anyone, big in Asia and Las Vegas.

I find early Beatles insipid, and while I love lots of their post Rubber Soul stuff, there is some serious lameness therein too.
However, overall I like them and appreciate how pioneering they were for their time.

I don't mean to be contrary or anything but post Peter Green, Fleetwood Mac were/are shít.

There's no such thing as a universally loved band because there will always be people who hate them. Going by some of the replies on this thread, U2 probably qualify as much for universally loved as overrated. I know lots of people who have no taste hate the Beatles and Queen

It's probably because the early Beatles records were marketed towards the teeny-bopper demographic and it's only later that they started moving away from the silly love songs and experimenting with other sounds. And drugs.
