There's no need for the 'young men' in the title as it all boils down to a few simple ideas, regardless of whether your a 17 year old male or a 67 year old female.

The nutrition sticky located here has a lot of useful information but you'll probably be overwhelmed by it starting out.
    • Work out your maintenance requirements [URL="http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=50956807&postcount=4
      "]here[/URL]
    • Fat loss is achieved by deducting 500 calories per day from this for each pound per week you want to lose
    • 2lb per week is the ideal weightloss you should aim for
    • A good way to achieve this would be to deduct 500-750 from maintenance to lose the first weekly 1 - 1.5 pounds and work up to 1,750+ calories worth of weekly excercise to lose the other 0.5 pounds
    • Diet is the key to weightloss, not excercise (it's only an assitant to aid you)

To start off, cut out all the crap - you know what most of them are (sweets, crisps, fizzy drinks, takeaways, etc.).

If you're overwhelmed, start with switching breakfast to healthy choices, then move onto lunch, then dinner and so on. All the information you need is on the sticky linked above.

You can use a calorie tracker such as http://www.fitday.com to aid you. Most have associated smartphone apps which make tracking easier.
