Hi all. My uncle died recently of a heart attack. He wasnt that old, only in his 50's. Anyways, his heart attack scared me a little. Im only 24 but im gettin fairly overweight. I want to do something about it now before its too late. I wasnt always this heavy but since losing my job (plumber, so I was always active) I've seen the weight pile on. Id love to join the gym but cant afford it on the dole. Im lookin for help on diet and foods. I play soccer so thats some bit of exercise. Any help would be very welcome as im fairly blind when it come to healthy foods etc. Cheers and thanks again.
If you post your diet someone will give advice. Its too broad a question at the moment.

Sounds like you need to cut your meals since you are moving from an active job to a more sedentry life

Losing weight is 70% diet 30% exercise.

You need to look as right eating not as a "diet" but just as a lifestyle, correct eating is the only sure way to lose weight. Cut out all the "bad" carbs, especially white bread, pastas etc.

Also up your game with the exercise. Remeber a run or a brisk walk is free and its a great way to lose weight, all you need is a good iPod.

    Jack,
i'm really not trying to be nasty or anything like that, but, cut down on your eating and go for long walks or runs. IT REALLY IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT. No degree in science needed, this does work. YOU DECIDE, YES OR NO. Believe it or not, no one else does care, the choice is completely yours. Good luck, give yourself 3 months, then come back on this forum and tell us how you've got on. Then we'll see how serious you were. I mean it, go on and really best wishes.

Ha, promoting safefood mightn't go down too well around here, remember that giant argument that went on a while back? That pyramid is crap.

Read the stickies, eat less, cut out the bread and you'll lose weight.

I lost 4 nearly 4 stone in six months. I cut out the crap i was eating and walked to and from work everyday. 4.4km each way. I remeber at the start in Jan i was sweating like a bull and it was freezing cold out then in may when the mornings where really warm and sticky i was practically dry. Everyone noticed after a while and the compliments made me feel really good. I started walking another 7km. (2 and bit Hours) most evening out along the clontarf prom to bull island and back. And i really enjoyed it.

It was quite hard to push myself at the start. People ask me all the time what diet i was on and how much work did it take. My advice i give now is eat less, eat right and MOVE more it really is that simple.

Cut out the bread, it really is a killer.

Went away on holiday and let myself go there for a while but getting back on track now. Have joined a Gym and once my fitness levels get going im going to try out some of the weight routines the guys in here are always on about.

That point cannot be emphasized enough. I would also add that you should look to seriously cut down on eating pasta, white rice etc as well. It will make a huge difference.

One other tip that you might not hear in many places... Do not substitute fizzy drinks with 'lite' drinks (Coke zero, fanta lite etc) and flavored water. They seem great considering it contains little or no calories, fat etc... However the killer is an ingredient called aspartame. If you google that you will see a lot of studies about it.

My personal experience with drinking it is that in increases my appetite and can result in needless snacking, which is a killer especially late in the evening.

The biggest staple in your new diet should be water (stop drinking fizzy drinks etc)... If you can grow to enjoy drinking that you will be shocked at the impact it will have on your weight loss.

You know what giving up bread does too? It sorta makes you stop going for the easy option. I think the spread of butter is an unnecessary amount of calories too. Best thing is to try and make up proper meals from scratch with fresh ingredients.

Cut out all bread/pasta and go for brown bread/brown rice if u are to eat it..Go for a walk or a steady jogg and drink plenty of water and youll notice the difference down the line

Eat as much and as many different types of veg as you can. Cook yourself way more then you would usually, a few different types and get into the habit of eating them with every meal, eat less rice/ bread what ever and replace with vegetables. learn to cook your meals from scratch, if you dont eat processed food for a few weeks and do nothing else you will loose weight. this is also cheaper and if you are on the dole make yourself nice stews and soups with lots of veg and stewing beef as you have a bit more time to cook.

you dont need the gym, do you have a bike? you can walk, you can run. Swimming a few times a week can be cheap in some pools its only a couple of quid during the day, but if you cant afford it, run or walk.

When it comes to weight loss the 70% diet, 30% training rule is true, however a lot of people (myself included) find it hard to adhere to a diet unless the're training.

Also a lifestyle change is all about changing your habits and these are hard to change so take it in stages. Apparently it takes approx three weeks to change a habit so my advice would be to hit the road/park three times a week for a few weeks first, get the feel good factor then slowly integrate in your new diet. Start with changing your breakfast, get use to that then change lunch then dinner.

Look on this as a long term project with some short term goals to keep you focused & best of luck :)

My advice is to eat a breakfast everyday of 2 mugs coffee with low fat milk, 2 pieces fruit and a low fat organic probiotic yogart or porridge made with low fat milk, lunch either homemade soup or a homemade chicken / tuna salad, dinner eat brown rice with either baked fish or protein and veg and drink 3 litres water per day. Snack on fruit, rice cakes wth peanut butter or homemade banana bread with walnuts and walk for an hour per day. Works for me..good luck..

op you need a diet plan

you need to think about what you are going to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner etc

I suggest you buy The 4 Hour Body by Tim Ferriss. He has some great material in there and you could learn a lot of the fundamentals that way.

Take the time to educate yourself.

One thing you should realise is that you will have to start cooking your own meals if you really want to be healthy.
