Do you workout while listening to headphones?

This might sound like a silly question but hear me out on this.

It's something I don't do mostly because I want to rely on my own motivation. I do a lot of running, body weight circuits and supplemented weight lifting sets. I could make a list of songs that could get me fired up and would be perfect to listen to while working out, especially while running. But let’s say I do a workout without the music and it turns out to be a poor workout or I could only manage less reps/shorter distances. Does this make any sense?

But it's something I'm thinking about, mainly because the music in my gym is starting to annoy me and I could possibly help me get a better faster workout. But I'm a little worried about relying on something else besides my own motivation.

I always listen to my own music when working out! Does it really matter where the motivation comes from!? I like my own tunes to 'zone out' with .. anyway the music to my mind is not the motivating factor, it just makes those really repetitive sets and long miles less boring! :)

I guess it would help to zone, especially when the gym is busy. I've noticed when I'm running on the beach and they have speakers playing and allways seem to pick up the pace a bit. But lets say you were training for fitness tests were headphones or anything of the like could not be used, would it still be a good idea to use them

I have recently bought a mp3 to listen to while working out and really find it motivating but I just cant get the damn ear pieces to stay in.

    What kind do you use?

I listen to music for runs, but never for races, and not for weight-training either.
I use the bud type that fit inside your ear, the regular ones are too big for my tiny ear lugs.

I used to but not anymore. I tended to fiddle around too much with the ipod.
Now it's just me and my thoughts.

Only if I'm doing cardio to stop me going insane.

Lifting weights? No, I find they get in the way and I'm more focused on my breathing and form than the music. Also I sweat like a beast doing squats so they won't last long anyway.

Well firstly I listen to music ALL the time, no matter what I'm doing. For cardio stuff on machines definitely. Running outside in the park, I like to hear the birds & nature. Lifting, depends, usually not.

I haaaaave to have music when working out on my own, whether it be jogging, sprints or lifting heavy things. In particular lifting, i like to zone out and get agressive when hittin a max. When zee tunes are blasting in your ears leaving the dressing room walking on to the gym floor, love that sh!t! The one and only time i don't use music is when working out with mates, we motivate each other.

When I go for a run I need music or else it is just unbearable. Doing sprints is okay without music but music adds that bit extra to my motivation. Doing weights I don't use music because the ipod and headphone wire gets in my way.
These are headphones I got after the 'normal' kind kept popping out. They NEVER pop out http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/5348839/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CHome+entertainment+and+sat+nav%7C14419512/c_2/3%7C19719038%7CAudio+accessories%7C28888408/c_3/4%7Ccat_28888408%7CHeadphones%7C28888642.htm

I find using headphones too frustrating, so I usually just make do with what's on in the gym. I sometimes do ask them to turn it up though, because a couple of the staff like it to sound like a library.

Let me guess, you sing baritone opera to the bar?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 727 ✭✭✭prettygurrly

i actually listen to the radio in the morning. but the gym has music on which i need to keep me going on the treadmill - i can hear it through the radio.
the handsfree kit for my phone drives me demented as the sweat makes the earphones fall out. but i cant change the earphones cos i need the handsfree set for the radio. ugh!

It's more high pitch musical numbers....
    "Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
    Close my eyes and leap"

I run mostly and do so to lose weight. For me it's is not a 'stroll in the park', it's a work out. I like to push myself and therefore I need to apply myself 100% to that task in order to give maximum effort. MP3's, headphones and any other gadgetry would be an a unnecessary distraction for me. I would start enjoying the music and lose concentration on the task in hand, which is to push myself, keep the heart rate high and in the end burn the fat.

Plus I run on the road and other public places so I like to be aware of my surroundings, i.e hear cars coming etc. so that's another reason.

However I did get a thought by reading the thread title. Wouldn't it be good if someone done a audio exercise routine. Like you would would have someone in your ear saying: run faster you lazy bas***d. Or more seriously someone giving you good technical advice.

no point in me even going to the gym without my music.ill turn around if i forget my ipod.

I listen to live sets of djs etc at gigs while doing cardio, really good to stop you thinking about the time. You can hear the crowd in the background and I completely zone out. catch myself singing along loads of times!

I need my own music too,ANYTHING to drown out the Euro dance rubbish that my gym usually has on.
    Scooter type stuff,awful.

I bought these a couple of months back.... http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_en.nsf/root/private_headphones_sport-line_504034

They come with three different types of buds and fins. I haven't had one fall out yet on a run. The only drawback is they have noise isolation so you need to have your wits about you when running on the footpath/road.
