its hard to call, they only took the guns and there was plenty of other easy robs around the house, yet they didn't come prepared for a safe they used my tools to get it open.

Well if you have a safe that meets the ISO/BS standard (which you did) then there's not a lot of blame that can go at your door.

Were the bolts in the rifles? I must start storing my bolts separately myself...

yeah I had the bolts hidden in the back of the wardrobe but they wrecked my room searching for the safe keys(which were with me) and must have found them while doing so, they didn't find any ammo though.

Then you did all you could do mate... Feel sorry for you- look like nice guns.

I used to keep a padlock through the mag-well. But sure if someone can get into the safe then the pad-lock will mean nothing!

That makes me feel so sick to hear , Im very sorry for the trouble you have to go through. I myself have a buffalo river safe but when buying it the dealer said it has a "fold" inside the door so it cant be opened with a nail bar or jimmy bar ! Now I dont know after reading this. Fair play to you for taking the bolts out , By the sounds of things they knew what they were looking for if they got the bolts. Absolutely sickening and no doubt the authorities will try put the blame on you. The same thing happened a friend of mine and it took years for him to be granted a firearms license again but the cnuts pulled the safe off the wall and through the hallway with a jeep or something. They had plenty of time on their hands as they had been watching the house and knew my friend was gone for the day. They were able to break enough of the wall away behind the safe so is to strap a chain round and yank it out. At the end of the day you took all the safety precautions you could take and at least no ammo was got. Sorry again to hear your trouble

if they really want to get the safe and they have enough time you wont be able to stop them all you can hope for is to delay them, try keep tools that they could use to break in to the safe away from it,and like vhunter did keep the ammo and bolts hidden!

I feel you pain man only last year my house was broken into and and the scum managed to wedge the door of the safe open and bend back one of the cornors {buffalo river safe} and got the double barrel shotgun.

Some people say that you will have a horrid time from cops when it comes to applying for another licence, In my experiance the Guards couldnt have been nicer saying i had all the safty precausions in order, and when i did apply for another licence i was only waiting two weeks.

Anyhow i hope they catch the scum and you get your guns back

    I feel for ya man.

I can't believe the cheeky f*****s use your tools to open the safe.

Do you mind me asking what sort of safe it was?

It might be worth your while to give the serial numbers to some RFDs incase they turn up.

Guns can be easily replaced so put it in perspective. It would be a lot worse if they stole something like your dogs which was happening in Cork last month.
Did you ring the insurance company? Must they be itemized on your policy?
    Do you need receipts etc.

    Totally sucks mate

Friend of mine had his guns stolen out of a buffalo river safe couple years back. I had personally bolted it to the wall for him, but they just bent open the door, ridiculously small tab of steel for the lock to act against !!

He was gutted, 22lr, 12b semi and a family heirloom 16b, luckily he had his brand new sauer with him. He had a fitted alarm thet rand preset numbers if tripped, this was before the new regs even, but ****ers just cut the phone line before they went in !!

He was extremely lucky in that the guards recieved a tipoff and found them all stashed in a derelict cottage, all intact

I since turned his office into a strong room with a door made out of 6mm still and 6 locking points, now with a monitored alarm, love see the B&ST&RDS try get through that !!

If ever I build my own house I'll do the same !!

You should look into eircom phone watch and individual sensors on all doors and windows. It's expensive to get put in but gives real peace of mind.

As an NARGC member they have a reduced rate with an alarm monitoring company. My friend shopped around and there are quite a few, eircom were the dearest. I fitted an alarm myself where I work, not a whole lot to it, the company just came round and inspected it and set it up with there control centre.

The one he got had a nice touch to it, if someone broke in and forced you to turn off the alarm, if you typed in the code, but changed the last digit +1, it turned off the alarm but also alerted the guards straight away.

If your code was 1234, you put in 1235 and the guards are on the way

I'm gonna make a certain romm which has stone walls all round into a fortress, make my own safe out of thick steel and reinforced concrete inside that room, safe within a safe. argos wireless cctv camera seem cheap and effective too.

For what its worth if a criminal wants your firearms and they are in the safe they will if they have the time get the guns by whatever means. I had this conversation with the local FO and CPO only recently. Most burglaries ar opportunistic and the fact the guns are in a safe/cabinet bolted to the wall means its too hard to get at. These lads had time... A friend of mines was robbed recently only realised it when he couldnt find his wallet, then the wife couldnt find her purse, then the kids wondered where the lap top was, guns werent touched

Sorry to hear your guns were swiped, another simple security idea is to have two short lengths of thick chain welded to each side of the gun safe , pass it through the actions or trigger guards of the guns and lock it with a good quality padlock, even if they do get the door open it'll take them another while to get through the chain, it only costs 20 or 30 euros so is worth doing.

another trick someone suggested was to leave a cheap gunsafe where it's very obvious, pooorly affixed to the wall, with couple lengths of steel pipe inside

Let them pull it off the wall and take it with them :D

Pity the law doesn't allow you to leave something far more unpleasant than a few steel pipes inside it;) Thats a great idea though. Says he who just sold a cheap spare gunsafe....

 Hope the scrotes rot in hell.
This shows up the difference between real gun safes and gun lockers which is what most of us, myself included, have at home.I have my keys in a separate small safe and eircom phonewatch.
If you search youtube there is a video of a 'gunsafe ' being levered open in about 2 mins.
Take heart, its a small country and the guns just might show up.

I think I remember seeing something on tv years ago about a 12gauge lock.

It was the size of a cartridge, you loaded it as normal and turned a key which brought out two wedges to lock it in place but if you tried to batter it out from the muzzle end with a piece of rebar it had a primer and small charge which would permantly damage the breech rendering it useless.

I know it is not going to stop them steeling it but at least it will not be used against any one.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, lads its the time of year when robberies treble so every should review their security especially where guns and ammo are concerned.
I have two gun safes both with 6 heavy steel pins that lock on all sides, it took two of us with a struggle to carry these in and fit them, gone are the days when you could throw the 12 bore behind the door, and their was always someone present in the house.
Monitored alarms are good but most thieves will test the response times a few days previous, these scumbags have every angle sorted and some dont even give a **** if they are caught as most will only get a slap on the wrist, while your left with a wrecked house and missing property.

I'm sorry to hear you had your guns stolen, I know how attached I am to mine. The tacticool stock is really distinctive and should make your CZ easily recognisable.

Do you mind me asking what type of locking mechanism was in your safe

That is not nice and my condolences to you, its very upsetting to have your home violated by these animals.

I have my 3 firearms in a pretty good safe attached to a brick wall in a hidden area of the house. Eircom phone watch + back up radio link (Both monitored). Alarm is always on. Automated gates, sensor lights etc and I am still thinking about upgrading. OFF TOPIC FOR A BIT - Security does not come cheap. I got my bill last month from Phone watch - service contract and monitoring €480 for the year. Took out my NARGC Card which says 12.5% discount and called Phonewatch who informed me that the NARGC did not renew it this year so pay in full please. Anyway some nice chap up there gave me 2 months free which equated to the discount.

I feel for you and hope you have a successful outcome.

Sorry for your troubles and like everyone else I hope you get your gear back and the theiving sh1ts get caught. Alot of people have Buffalo River (and similar) safes and must be concerned from reading your story.

I was never convinced as to how good most gun safes are considering you can buy them for around €300 and you wouldn't get much of a domestic or office safe for that price!

The door seems to be a vulnerable point. Any body got any good ideas how to reinforce a door or retro-fit something to a safe to make it stronger?

Maybe this kind of information should be sent by PM and it could then be sent round?

One tip I saw when installing a safe was to plaster the back with Wurth adhesive (the stuff they use to attach car windsecrrens - can be got in any motor factors) just before bolting it to the wall. It makes it damned difficult to pry the safe from the wall -even without the bolts. A bead of it can also be put around the perimeter like a silicone sealer. It makes getting a pry bar between the safe and wall a bitch of a job.

The scumbags have been known to take a fair piece of the wall with them and not care what damage was done to the house!!!!

If someone is really committed to stealing something you own, they'll get it eventually.

The only thing you can do is to ensure that is as awkward, time consuming and plain out risky as possible for them to do so.

People in the house as much as possible, dogs, locks upon locks, security systems, cameras, camouflaging safes, not keeping guns & bolts & ammo together etc.

do any of ye think one brand of safe is better than the other?

I like the look of the warm-flow ones they seemed good enough when looking in the shop.
At the minute I have a home made one

Not sure, I was a bit surprised to find out a nailbar opened one  I think I'd be having words with the manufacturer about that.

Take the safe to a metal fabricators , there is one in every town and have them weld 8mm or 10 mm plate all around it , it'd be that heavy that even if thieves did get it off the wall they would never carry it and they couldn't cut into it without serious cutting gear and making a hell of a lot of noise. Also most safes are only held on to the wall with a few bolts , i think there were only 4 on mine and the bolts that came with it were short, 2" or so , i drilled another 6 and bought much longer bolts in chadwicks.

yeah its a good idea, landkeeper pointed it out that if you weld steel sheets around and tight to the safe and also have the sheets coming say 8 inches past the door of the safe you'd never get a crowbar or nailbar in at the door.

before you bolt it to the wall, chisel out a groove in the wall half way up the height of the safe, big enough to feed a good heavy chain through. that with a good lock and well bolted to the wall should sort out the weaker safes.

Car thieves laugh at those snazzy yellow gear and steering wheel locks, but will walk right past a car with a good chain around the wheel.
