As a little lad I liked (when I could get to see them, depending on who had a tv at the time):

    Muffin The Mule.
    Four Feather Falls.
    Torchy The Battery Boy.
    Supercar.
    Space Patrol.
    The Woodentops.
    Rag, Tag, and Bobtail.
Tails of the Riverbank (I was a bit older by this time but even today I still like kids programs.)

We were late getting a television, black and white, which my mother rented, For me it was:

    Rin Tin Tin
    Lassie
    My Friend Flicka
    Black Beauty
    Skippy
    Flipper
    Anything Disney
    Charlie Chaplin
    Buster Keaton

If it wasn't so late I might remember some others. Funny most are about animals, me being a city girl the only animal I ever had was a cat.:)

Those animal ones my little sister liked too.

It could be gender orientated maybe? I know I couldn't stand them.

Or maybe I have always been grouchy?:pac:

Strange how that call is still recognised as being Tarzan after all these years.

Twizzle (and the cat who said in miaowly voice 'I don't like this' - I didn't know his name but I've found out that it was Footso)
Hank the cowboy (but what I remember was very static compared to what they show on YouTube)
    Muffin the Mule
    The Woodentops
    Rag Tag and Bobtail
    Bill and Ben
    Andy Pandy
    Tales of the Riverbank
    Animal Magic

Mr Ed, Jack Beny, Green Acres and the inimitable Sgt Bilko. I still watch him if he's on the box and can laugh out loud :D

Obviously what I've given above was available in the UK, but were there any 'homegrown' programmes created by RTE in the 50's and 60's for children that people still have soft spot for? - agus as Gaeilge?

RTE Television only began broadcasting in 1961. I can't remember any childrens' programmes in Irish but then I probably wouldn't have watched them anyway if there were any.

    What about Seoirse agus Bartley

There was also a ventriloquist and an artist named Blaithin. Had a bit of a crush on her :D. This was about '65 or '66

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,108 ✭✭✭Jellybaby1

Ah yes, now I remember Blaithin. She did charcoal drawings, I tried to copy her drawings and failed, but I loved watching her draw. Was that all in Irish though I can't remember?

The first thing I ever saw on a TV was some swimming competition and being about 4 or 5 at the time, I thought it was most uninteresting - and all this in a darkened living room.

My parents never bought one until I was about 8 or 9, but I didn't watch it much, I preferred the outdoor life.

Wanderly Wagon was the ultimate Irish kids show, but there was also a show called (I think) 10 minute tales, which had Rosaleen Linehan telling old folk stories.

    What about the Matchless Mice?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44 Mr Johnson

Wind in the Willows, which was just a bunch of small animals wandering around looking confused.

Champion the Wonder Horse on a Saturday morning, the only thing which could get me out of bed !

The Wind in the Willows was just the animal kingdom's answer to Jeeves & Wooster!

My take on Mr.Benn. Conceived, shot and edited very hastily. We have learned that writing a script would help immensely. :o

    What about the Matchless Mice?

I remember them!! The intro music was a trad music tune called King of the Fairies...Horslips had it on their LP :P Dancehall Sweethearts released 1974. Anyone for Broigin follows the magic tune? (spelling could be a little off!!)

I vaguely remember her reading out birthday requests and talking through an old tennis racket.

I was a mega fan of Daktari! And the chimp was Judy! The only humans I remember were Dr Marshall Thompson and Mike Makula.

I think shows like that could be given another airing and do well.

I was in England at the time - Andy Pandy, The Woodentops, Sarah and Hoppity (though that scared me), Bill & Ben, and Richard Greene as Robin Hood. Also Ivanhoe, I think. There was also a series of 'fantasy' tales (The Singing Ringing Tree was one of them) dubbed into English, but originally..erm..German? Dr Who on Saturday nights when I was a bit older.

Speaking of horses? The one and only ............ Mr Ed

How many of you remember this dreadful thing. Purportedly a sitcom from the 1960's.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,108 ✭✭✭Jellybaby1

Never heard of that one Rubes. Better off, I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,551 ✭✭✭Rubecula

You are so lucky Jellybaby. I remember watching it and even as a young fella I wanted to throw a brick through the TV when it was on. My little sister thought it was great, and yet now, she can't even remember the show. It must have wound it's way into my tortured mind.

We tend to record favourite TV series and movies when they come on the box and then transfer to disc to watch when there is nothing on. This year we finally came to the end of our stock and we found ourselves looking at each other saying "now what'll we do?". We have been watching The Syndicate and Homeland recently, also enjoying the series of Parky's interviews, David Niven was classic, and also just discovered Outnumbered is a little gem.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,876 ✭✭✭Spread

Not one for TV but I read Niven's autobiography (The Moon's a Balloon) and it was very funny. Especially his first foray into, er, conjugal matters.

Absolutely! I also have 'Bring on the Empty Horses', which is another great title to start with! What a life, and a great humour too.

I also read John le Mesurier's bio last year which was very interesting. As I read, I could almost hear his voice. I think he liked an easy life! He said himself that he had a 'good war' in India. Couldn't hack it as an ordinary soldier so they made him an officer, nice one! 'A Jobbing Actor' - It's worth a read.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,876 ✭✭✭Spread

Yes, I also read Bring On The Empty Horses. I knew John Le Mesurier ......... often did the session with him ............ The Mitre in Paddington and then onto an afternoon drinking hole ........ either The Stage & Radio, The London Cry or The New Ambassadors in Orange St. In those days the pubs closed for a few hours at 3pm and if you had a psychological thirst you had to frequent these dens of iniquity. Ahhhhh, those days!:D

Gosh Spread, who don't you know and who haven't you met? You must have a book inside you, or is it already written? Let us know, please! And next on my list will be Rube's life story! :)

Now don't laugh or snigger at this, but I used to watch some kids shows when I was a young 'un.

One of my favourites was Space Patrol.

This link shows you a sort of abridged bit of the show. (Happy memories) I actually prefered it to Fireball XL5.

Don't suppose any of you folks remember it? It isn't on YouTube so I am not sure how the link will work.

I remember that one OG. I used to know all the words to the theme song and it's weird how some of them came back to me as I watched the opening of this video.

I'm sure I was no more than a baby, so I must have had super-powers myself to remember the words :D

Marina, Lady Penolopy, Destiny, Melody, Harmony, Symphony and Rhapsody.

Then came the live action wimmins in purple wigs and silver cat suits. What more could a growing boy wish for? :D
