    I know it's the Mail.

I know I'm going to regret saying this but..

War is the default situation in Europe.Peace has broken out for a period as long as we have experienced only once, from the end of the Napoleonic wars to the Franco Prussian war.

So it's not as remote a possibility as some people think.

It's obviously a bad prediction of what would happen. As if the French are ever going to win a war.

"Aided by Spanish and Italian auxiliaries, backed by German money and quietly supported by neo-imperialist Russia, the French army has encircled our expeditionary force on the other side of the Channel and cut it
    to shreds."

    Bad Europe!!

Europe has worked in that regard, for centuries we have been at each others throats. I venture to say, apart from Yugoslavia (which was a civil war) these 66 years since WW2 is the longest time Europe was ever at peace since the Roman empire. (not sure about that).

Thats definitely true. Stephen Pinker calls it the long peace. In general there were major European wars every generation until 1870, when peace reigned until 1914. We know what happened then.

The article is ok - it is designed to shock, as all counter factual histories are. I discount Europe going to war in the West, but not the anti-capitalist terrorism. Unless Europe get to be run for its citizenry in future, rather than the banks or bondholders, thats inevitable.

True, ask you Polish friends. I see nothing to stop Russia getting back some territory in the next 20 years. Europe is poor, and largely dis-armed.

Lol, the Sanguine feelings Ireland has to Russia are based on it being on the other side of Europe. Putin is a semi-dictator, Russia is a dangerous country.

I wasn't. I think it will. Who, or what, is going to stop Russia retaking Latvia if they feel that ethnic russians there are in trouble?

    Answer. Nobody.

The war in the West is unlikely. One in the East is more likely.

Nah. It was an iffy barrel of Guinness.

Coincidentally I read that's what started the 1798 rebillion (the article was written in 1797).

All those who bash the French make me laugh! What did Britain did during WW2? Run away in France and hide in Britain behind the channel until the arrival of the American troops. The French surrendered because their allies (the British) decided to run away instead of fighting. Red arrow me as long as you like but honestly, stop thinking you won the WW2 by yourselves, if it wasnt for the Americans, you would be speaking German now.

Not sure about this, but weren't there a couple of wars in the run-up to the Franco-Prussian war? Austria and ... France? Prussia? I think it was the period after the Franco-Prussian war that was peaceful (44 years), mainly because everyone was so concerned with getting territory elsewhere and because Bismarck was such a frightening person. Interestingly, you could argue the reason why there's been peace since 1945 was because people were concerned with gaining territory elsewhere (the cold war) and because Germany (and to a lesser extent, France) was relatively strong in Europe, similar to how Bismarck had worked it in his day.

What's really worrying about this article is that the Daily Mail essentially seems to be taking a pro-EU stance (whilst taking numerous digs at France).

They have us by the bollox as well, soon they will be our major oil source they are already our major gas supplier.

But I don't think so they are undergoing a population decrease and to spite the energy and mineral wealth their economy is still bad. Its a kind of a corrupt anarchic Mafia pure capitalist system. Its a new system and it is very top heavy a kind of Kleptocracy.

The one thing they get right in the article is the fact that Putin will still be there in 2018.

The Russians might. Surely it would make more sense to have a market to sell the gas to, rather than a market to force the gas on to?

But, yeah, if Putin is still in power, who knows?

Genuinely curious, in todays Europe who would be the military top dog, nukes taken out of the equation? If we all really went to war who would most likely come out tops?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,915 ✭✭✭MungBean

Ireland would join Britain for the fight, all the unemployed jump at the chance of a job and join the army. Britain + Ireland > France.

We become the new overlords !!!!

France, in equipment and numbers followed closely by Britain. But that does not matter. Who could rearm the quickest and that would be our friends the Germans.

In the whole of Europe it would be the Russians and then believe it or not the Ukrainians. Probably because of their nice neighbours.

The one thing they get right in the article is the fact that Putin will still be there in 2018.

He has been in politics since 1990 and became president in 1999, Prime Minister now but we all know he is the one in charge in Russia,I don't see Napoleon or Merkel still being in power in 7 years let alone Ed Miliband leading the Brits,Putin though is a different matter he likes his power and he should be feared as it is an empire he leads not a country.

Its hard to know. It might well be the French.

An acquaintance of mine, who is German military ( for what it's worth), said that ignoring nukes Turkey could defeat all of Europe.

(I don't see that happening its a thought experiment).

The Greeks, Austrians, former Yugos. would have no way to stop em, the Germans are de-militarised and then you take the French to get to the Atlantic. Thats the hard one.

This assumes Germany doesn't get to re-militarise.

I didn't read it in the paper, I seen it on Google News, and no I don't read the Mail as it is a fcuking gutter rag as seen in this pisstake of an article.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,980 ✭✭✭Dotrel

The G8 have all the most powerful militaries in the world. Of those 8 France and the UK are the two europeans who still have nukes. France have had to put up with 70 years of being called cowardly surrender-monkeys , so you know they're just itching for a fight.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭Yahew

Just read the article, or get out of the thread.

As it happens that article is pro-European ( as some of the angry commentators have pointed out). It's saying that if we don't get our house in order now, worse is to come, possibly war. Its overdone, but an interesting take.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,940 ✭✭✭4leto

Then there is Israel who are also a powerful European army and they have nukes.
