Dealing with Privilege & Allies

This is an issue I've been struggling with lately. In particular, it's caused a lot of social difficult with different groups, forums online as people seem to think that LGBTs only have to put up with outright discrimination when a great many factors hold them to a disadvantage.

Another issue, related, is when allies who would consider themselves pro-gay say something homophobic or privileged. They will deny the possibility because they are pro-gay, and then all their friends will come in making fun of you because of how pro-gay they are - but the comment was still wrong.

I found this site had some good articles on these subjects - http://borderhouseblog.com/?page_id=54

Here is a very good example of the aggressive reaction people have towards privilege -

For those that can't see this I have the first 4 pages saved here, please read them -

The original poster in question left the site previously due to comments made with regards gay people being thrown out of a pub for being gay(the comment was the typical "Why is it only an issue when they're being gay?" followed by other such privileged remarks), and I got torn into by the forum at large.

They seem to refuse to believe this stance is one held by the wider LGBT community, and I am wondering what to do, to demonstrate that it is. It's times like this I wish I had my own "Gay Mafia". :D

off topic post deleted. Any problems pm me.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
