I have steak in the fridge with a use by date of today the 28th of october, should I throw this out. I planned cooking it tonight

If it was my steak, I'd cook it quite happily. A lot of those use by dates are to cover the supermarket, not the date they think the thing will go off. They typically put it several days ahead so that you are not likely to eat something nasty and sue them.

Apply common sense. Look at it, smell it, and if it seems good to you, cook it.

I saw a tv program where someone deliberately ate food past its use by date to see how far he could push it. And the answer was a long way. Most food is good for the best part of a week after date, and some of them a lot more. If in doubt, cook it for longer.

Definitely give it the smell test. Fresh meat lets you know when it's gone off and millenia of evolution were spent successfully without sell by dates.

I'm a bit nervous of some frozen lamb I found in the back of my freezer though.

It's about 3 months old, smells and looks ok. What say ye, yay or nay?

Steak is labeled way before it goes off. It'll prob taste better than the day you bought it.

as for the lamb, if its a good freezer, i'd say its fine. Has soem port chops last week, must of been at least 3 months old. Were fine. If its looks and smells fine then i'd be ok with it
