Not sure if I should be posting this on strength & sports section? Ok with all the threads at the moment in relation programs wonder what people’s opinions are in relation these? Should beginners/novices pick one & give it their all? Are they a waste of time as a person will probably never reach their full potential without a coach? As 5/3/1 & SS has their critics on here regardless I would imagine due to their simplicity beginners/novices should still see good gains?

Alternatively I would imagine it would be better for someone to seek a coach/PT be assessed regularly & have a program written accordingly rather than plugging away at the one size fits all approach? This will probably come down to a cost issue as regular coaching won’t be cheap. With IP gone I'm guessing the only gyms that would facilitate proper programming to their members would be Ironside & ECB? I guess what I'm asking here is it better for someone to seek some sort of coaching rather than what I reckon most people do find something on the net apply it to themselves & hope for the best?

Fastest way to make progress - coached sessions with someone who knows what they're doing

Next - REALLY knowing what works for ya and sticking to it

Next - Programmed sessions with someone who knows what their doing with frequent check ins

Next - Training yourself and nto having a clue

I can speak from limited exp when I say people i've coached have made the most progress with me their beside them at each session. And ones who I've programmed for and left to do their own thing invariably come up short with results.

I think I do a pretty good job of programming for myself when I have a target and something to train for, tbh I think I can do it better than anyone else. But if I don't have a goal or somthing I'm working towards (or if it's not PL) then generally I'll let someone else program because I'll be more likely to stick to it and see progress (like what happened in IP)

I would suggest even if you can find a good training partner with more knowledge than you have but who would still be close enough in level to train with is one of the best scenarios to have. Ironside is regular coaching alright and cheaper than a lot of commercial gyms. ECB is pretty much top level personal training and again would still be cheaper than gyms like Westwood etc. If cost is a big issue what I said above about a training partner and look at a ben dunnes or something similar.
