I was thinking of picking up one of Lyle McDonald's books. I've seen people say they are fans of his work on other sites.

Since I can't walk into Easons and have a quick flick through his books, what do people here think of them?

I've never read any of his books so I can't comment.

But I have taken a quick stroll through his forum and he comes across as a bit cranky:p

I have a few of his books and I like them.

If its just for fat loss, then I think you can put together a decent diet from the free articles on his site.

There's HUNDREDS of articles for free on his site - read them and you'll see what he's like.

For me, his site is the first one I go to when I'm looking for information. It's the perfect balance of science and real world, and because he's so OCD, he's so careful to qualify and back up everything he says that you can find the studies he's referring to without much hassle.

And he's pretty active on the forum and answers Qs too.

I'd have no hesitation buying any of his books.

I've read some of his articles and sometimes people can't translate these into book format. That was really my main concern.

I've read 'Flexible Dieting' and I just started reading 'The Stubborn Body Fat Solution' yesterday..and so far so good. I'd agree with Hanley in so much that his books are very detailed and he likes to cover every corner.

I suppose it just depends whether you like his writing style or not...if you like his articles then you'll like his books.

I used to read his articles, books and forum frequently and if I'm ever wondering anything about a certain food or supplement I'd always have a look to see what he says about it. I learned a lot from researching his work but I try to avoid his site as much as possible because he's just so miserable and the people on his forum take the same condescending tone as he does. They really suck the fun out of fitness. Always puts me in a bad mood whenever I look there.

He's a cranky bastard, but he writes very good, very detailed books. I've got Ketogenic Diet and UD2.0 and found them both easy to read, very well researched and worth holding onto.

I agree, cranky so-and-so but damn the man knows his stuff.

Great intro to a lot of biology stuff for the uninitiated.

    Guys,

How long did it take to receive his books?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,775 ✭✭✭EileenG

It was a while ago, but my memory was that they came pretty quickly.

I have his Rapid fat loss solution book. Some really good information in there if your determined to drop allot of bodyfat quickly. I really like Lyles honest no bull**** approach. Think you can get most of his stuff now as ebooks or in PDF format.

I don't know if I want to be doing a psmf diet. Keto can be tough enough with added fats

I've done PSMF. It works, but it's not fun. You never forget that you're on a diet. With keto, it's easy to forget the diet until you are looking at a menu.

His rapid fat loss diet was good, I read it for info be didn't fully do the diet. i used it for info and helped me make some decisions abut my own diet.

I like the fact that he explains the difference between dropping fat and dropping weight (water, glyco, fat). And also that you are supposed to rebound when you return and restock glyco and retain water. Was the first crash diet that I seen so that.
