Road Rage

I had a very nasty experience this lunchtime by being on the receiving end of somebody's road rage.

I was exiting an underground carpark when the car in front of me pulled up for no reason in the middle of the road. I blew the horn a few times but got no response. I was in a hurry so I decided to squeeze out past the car as there was room to do so.

As I was passing the window of the other car I rolled down my window and shot the driver a quizzical look. What happened next shocked me, the driver who was a middle aged woman launched into a barrage of filthy abusive language towards me, even flashing the v sign.

Stunned I muttered a mild expletive and drove off. She then tailed me out of the carpark blowing the horn incessantly. As I approached a roundabout she passed me on the inside mounting a road island in the process and clipping an indicator light on my car.

At this point I nearly lost it aswell but managed to keep my cool and instructed my brother sitting beside to get the number plate. I'll be reporting this Loon Bag and see where it goes from there.
Does anyone else in AH have any Road Rage experiences?

People need to chill the fcuk out when driving. Life is too short for that crap.

You started the "rage", and seemed to be very brave against a woman driver too.

I completely agree. OP, I have no sympathy. You should have left earlier to account for idiots if you were in a hurry, not beeped your horn repeatedly, aggravating other road users.

I'm so glad I get the train these days.

    Wait.

So she stopped for some reason you can't possibily imagine and all you did was blast her out with the horn and eye ball her when you passed and you're surprised she's angry?

    Wish it was a bloke.

I had a weird experience once though, some stupid woman overtakes me at about 90km/h on a 30km/h road. She was putting her lipstick on at the time too. I flashed the lights at her and all of a sudden she starts reversing her car towards me blaring the horn. She got about an inch from the front of my car, gave me the finger and then sped off.

    Crazy bitch.

I think you initiated all that and you are also a loon bag, if you are exiting a carpark the other driver has the right of way. Yet you beeped at her then aggressively drove past her.

    Its clear to me.

She had stopped a couple of minutes before I blew the horn. I only rolled down the window to see what was the problem, had she stalled are something. I wasn't meaning to provoke aggression of any sort.

You said you blew the horn a couple of times.
Rolling down the window can be considered an aggressive act, especially after blowing the horn.
Why roll down the window to give her a look ?
Were your windows too dirty to see through ?

Nope, this is a clear cut case.
Maybe the woman didn't move on (for whatever reason), but you initiated the "rage", and she responded in kind.

If you're upset about her actions, consider it a mirror on your own.

You experienced road rage but you also committed road rage. This woman stopped in front of you but you were exiting so she had the right of way.
She may have gone a bit far with tailing you but If it were me I would probably have got out of my car when you blew the horn and confronted you.

WOW, high horsers got here quick.

So if a car just stops in front of you, you would sit there for however long they needed to sort themselves out again yeah?

I'd beep them too, get a move on or get our of the way.

I love how people are basically ignoring the beeping, flashing lights and ACTUAL dangerous driving from the woman, because the OP beeped their horn a couple of times.

Well if someone parks up for no reason blocking a line of traffic behind them they can expect someone to blow the horn at them.

Bravo for some common sense at last.
Yes, don't you know that if someone decides to stop in front of you for half an hour to rummage through her handbag, you should bloody well sit there and feel privileged about it?
How dare you want to go somewhere?
Next time get out and apologize for sitting behind her, making her feel guilty.
Better still, find a parking spot till she sorts herself out and send her some flowers to say "sorry for breathing".

I love that the responce to a stopped car is to beep beep beep.

What happens if the person in the car has had some sort of medical emergency and is pleading for you to get out of your car to help them. Being curtious goes a long way.

In this case, the lady should certainly not have followed, should not have been aggresive and certainly should not have damaged your car.
But pulling along side her, rolling down your window and giving a 'look' probably led to some provocation.

I wasn't lamping on the horn, it was a couple of short beeps to let her know there was traffic waiting behind.

I agree with this, You cant just stop for no reason, the fact that she was able to follow the OP and act like a c**t proves there was no real emergency, and whatever her reason for stopping was, she clearly could have exited the car park and pulled over somewhere that wouldnt be holding up traffic!

The look I gave her was not threatening or provocative in any way. She had her window down so i rolled down mine to see what the problem was, In hindsight I probably shouldn't have.

This thread is confusing me. If I stopped like that without any indication of my intention, I'd fully expect someone would beep at me and I wouldnt consider that road rage. Surely only a very unreasonable person would consider that provocation to follow them and hit their car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,887 ✭✭✭IrishZeus

The over-reaction in this thread is both ridiculous and also, highly amusing to me :D

I'd have blown her - as stated, you're not just going to sit behind a car that randonly stops for no reason, no hazards, no nothing... Probably wouldn't have rolled down the window but would have looked in to make sure everything was ok.

Her response was well OTT and I'd be down the Guarda station within minutes if she so much as tipped off my car during her follow up "rage".

It generally seems to be, people seem to have this idea that when you put your hazards on then the rules of the road dont apply anymore. Parking on yellow lines is the most common thing!!

But at least if the woman had put them on then the people behind her would know that somethings up

Stopping for no apparent reason in the middle of a road/carpark/moving area means that you have become a "hazard" and your "hazards" should be switched on.

In this case they would have been put to their proper intended use and drivers behind would be aware to move around her without the beeping!

Yes, very much and I myself once almost lost the plot last January, I was travelling behind a Coach and a car for at least 10mins doing around 65-70km/h, I came to a stretch of open road with massive vision to overtake the two of them, with nothing behind me and the driver infront seemingly content to stay behind and making no moves to go I decided to overtake.

I had left fair distance behind the car and myself so wasn't tail gating him, out I went only for the dip sh1t car to make his move veering over almost straight into the side of my car, I swerved further right clipping a soft grassy margin and almost lost control narrowly avoiding hitting the ditch, a combination of ABS, sheer luck and the grassy mud being quite soft and its long stretch saved me as I ground the car to a stop only metres from a concrete wall, I was doing 90-100km/h when it happened and if he bothered glancing at him mirrors he'd have seen me overtaking him.

I was livid as I had my indicator on and unless he was blind he should have seen me going overtaking but he never checked his mirror. I was so angry I pulled the car out of there despite the gutter and absolutely floored it, I was doing 160-170km/h until I caught back up with him and subsequently over took him and tried to physically block him but he wouldn't stop and I followed him for 20kms but couldn't pull him over. I eventually abandoned it as the petrol light came on which was just as well as I was so furious I would probably have lost the rag with the muppet.

I reported him to the guards and told them what he had done and how I responded, and a month later the guards came to my place asking would I go to court and I decided not as my mother pleaded with me not to as he found out who I was and his family made contact with my parents not to pursue it with the guards.

Man that same thing happened to me! Except without the verge and the wall. I decided to pull back in, maintain my speed, while gripping my steering wheel white knuckle. I did flash my lights at him, but let him off. I called traffic watch which never ever seems to be manned, and didnt get through.

At least you scared him a little bit. :)

I would have given a quick flash of the lights, then moved around if space permitted. No point in rolling down the window and giving them the stink eye. The other driver clearly lost it at that stage, and should be pursued for the damage to your vehicle.

Give an update when you can.

I had a scary experience with a middle-aged lad in an old-style 4x4 yesterday in Rathgar > Highfield Rd > Palmerston. I had to stop at a junction entrance, as I I couldn't clear it. He started to beep the horn behind me. The junction opened up and I proceeded. Then I had to stop at the yellow box for the right turn as there were cyclists and he started to beep again. He followed me closely all along Highfield road and beeped at me again as I turned into my driveway.

Very imtimidating - and I'm not an easily intimidated driver.

Earlier, at the yellow box, I had nearly stopped the car and gotten out to ask him what the flip his problem was, but I didn't want to impede other drivers.
