Are plam oil and palm kernal oil good for cooking with, as they have high levels of palmitic and oleic acids?

Yes, they are nutritious and suitable for heating, but unrefined palm oil is very strong tasting and strong coloured so is not suitable for many dishes. I believe the refined stuff is not bad for you though, although I guess it's less rich in nutrients, like beta-caratone judging by the colour change.

Isn't this a highly unethical food stuff though, given the demand for palm oil has lead to the clearing of millions of acres of rain forest?

You can buy ethically sourced palm oil but yes you're absolutely right you should check where it comes from.

Grand thanks Adelie. I haven't actually come across it myself before, was just making assumptions based on fatty acid content. This might be of interest, then again maybe not?
