Just a heads up for people not going to the matches this weekend.

Friday 28/10 1935hrs Edinburgh v Leinster is live on BBC Alba.

Friday 28/10 2030hrs Munster v Aironi is live on TG4 then they are showing the Edinburgh v Leinster match in full. (deferred coverage)

Saturday 29/10 1800hrs Connacht v Blues is live on RTE2/S4C.

I cannot find any coverage of Ulsters game at the Scarlets.

Fair play to TG4. Two matches back to back.

Oh yeah, once again Munster get on live, and Leinster don't.
Same old, same old, etc etc etc ;)

I've no issue with TG4 showing Munster live as they are at home. I can't get over the fact that RTE are not showing Leinster though. They obviously don't want it if TG4 were able to get that too. The RTE coverage so far has been an absolute disgrace. Leinster are the European Champions ffs. Yet they'll have only shown, what, 2 of their first 7 games so far? They couldn't even film 2 of the games in the RDS with a view to a highlights show afterwards. And their excuse was the RWC, their coverage of which was hardly extensive!

Thankfully as a Sky subscribing STH I haven't missed anything myself, but I know a good few who have.

Why aren't RTE showing any games? Is their footie on or something?

RTE have been a joke this season. I thought the move from setanta to RTE would be great for the game but it hasn't turned out like that. Even last season they had Hook and Pope commentating on games and they didn't know anything about some of the players and were making the league out to be a micky mouse competition.

Sorry I meant to say on Friday, as there are two games on that overlap I thought (hoped) one would be on RTE and the other on TG4.

I agree that RTE have been poor in their coverage of the Pro12 this season. Maybe due to their 'extensive' (cough, cough) coverage of the World Cup.
But TG4 are covering both matches on Friday night.

Anyone remember the uproar here last season about tg4?
They've been very important this year.

Its the last day of the football League of Ireland season and RTÉ are showing a game from that (probably Shamrock Rovers v Galway United, although Rovers may actually win the title tonight). They've also got to fit in highlights to the International Rules Football match (there are only two of these a year) in there as well. No room for the rugby unfortunately.

Mind you if the Leinster game had kicked off at 6:30pm TG4 could possibly have shown both games live. 10:30pm is awfully late to start coverage of the Leinster game (the programme doesn't finish till nearly 1am). Come to think of it, why is the Munster game kicking off at 8:30pm? Can't remember of a later kick off time in a professional rugby game taking place in Ireland.

    1) TV scheduling
    2) If it kicked off at 6.30, you'd have the Limerick people moaning that they wouldn't be able to get there in time

To be honest, I think we're absolutely spoiled when it comes to coverage of rugby; it's rare that the Leinster and Munster games aren't covered live (yes, I know there have been a couple this year) and there aren't many sports which get that level of coverage. Connacht fans aren't so lucky but that's the commercial reality I suppose. If staying up a bit past my bedtime on Friday night is the price I have to pay, I'm ok with that.

The OLSC just posted this on Facebook:

n what we're sure will be a surprise to no one, neither of the Irish broadcast partners of the Celtic League will be showing Irelands European champions in action on friday night. This is just the latest in a long line of matches that won't be shown by Irish television. However, for those who have Satellite television, you can enjoy the game through the medium of Scots Gaelic on BBC Alba.

The OLSC is frankly tired of the attitude shown to our team by the Irish broadcast partners of the Celtic League and as such we would ask our members from now on to take a similar attitude to the rugby output of these stations.

Most Celtic League games, certainly those involving Irish and Welsh teams are shown on S4C and/or BBC2 Wales. Instructions on how to tune in these stations for Satellite television viewers are included below. We would recommend watching as many Leinster games as possible on these channels. Setanta also show delayed coverage of many games.

Six Nations games are of course available on BBC. Setanta also show delayed coverage of these games.

Thankfully, RTE have lost the rights to show highlights of HEC games, unfortunately to TG4. We would recommend watching ITVs highlights, presented as they are by leinsterman Craig Doyle. S4C also have limited highlights coverage.

We realise that it is not possible for everyone to make alternative viewing arrangements, in those situations we would ask members to make a commitment to change channels, make a cup of tea or take the dog for a short walk during ad breaks in coverage by RTE and TG4

Instructions on how to tune alternative stations into a Satellite system can be found here

Fair play to the OLSC but I don't know what their problem is with TG4. They were showing Celtic league rugby years ago.

Interesting that both Scottish teams are at home, both matches are being covered live (BBC Wales have Glasgow vs Ospreys) and they overlap (Glasgow game KO is 7.05pm; Edinburgh game KO is 7.30pm). This is unusual as AFAIK Scottish teams at home have had no live TV coverage to date this season.
Also makes you wonder with Connacht game KO at 6.00pm on Saturday why the Munster match could not have been played later on the Saturday night with live TV coverage leaving Leinster game to get live coverage on Friday night. Or for that matter have the Leinster game with a later KO on the Saturday night.
Regarding covergge of Leinster's games, I had to watch STV highlights for action from Leinster vs Glasgow. It was nowhere to be found on either RTE/TG4. Poor show in my opinion. Even S4C had brief action from Connacht vs Dragons - no coverage whatever on either Irish channel.

I'd say it gets a lot less viewers than if it were showing on rte/setanta.

I don't understand the point of this. OLSC are annoyed that RTE/TG4 aren't showing the Leinster game live so they are encouraging a boycott of RTE?

I would prefer them to complain and get a response as to why RTE/TG4 aren't showing the game live first. I presume it's something to do with the last game of the League of Ireland Soccer.

Don't understand the problem with TG4 either. They've always done their best for rugby. They certainly helped the Celtic League take off when it had no sponsor and no other TV station in Ireland (not sure about abroad) involved. They are also showing delayed coverage of the Leinster game. TG4 can't do anymore if you ask me! Also it's not fair to give out about the HEC highlights going to them when no one has even seen what show they have lined up for it. There is a distinction between TG4 and RTE which the OLSC are not seeing. This shows them in a bad light if you ask me.

I wonder if Hook and McGurks anti Schmidt agenda last season has anything to do with them implying they are happy that RTE lost the HEC highlights program.

Tend to agree with your points. Better for OLSC to write to RTE/TG4 rather than boycott the channels. Have to say though that since RTE/TG4 won contract back from Setanta they have been somewhat disappointing. As I pointed out no regular highlights of matches involving Irish teams especially highlights of teams not shown live. Both Scottish and Welsh viewers have regular highlights programmes ('STV Rugby' on Sunday night /BBC2W 'Scrum V' on Sunday teatime) why not Irish viewers?

RTE have been extrememly disappointing to be honest, and as for the highlights show setanta are doing the breakdown on sundays at 5 from now on.

I think they picked other games ahead of Leinster a couple of times. Not sure if they were home games for the other province which would explain it, but haven't they only shown 1 Leinster game live so far this season?

They show some of the Connacht home games which is only right because they're based in Galway and RTE show very few of our games

Last season most Leinster games were on RTE. Maybe they have some sort of deal going on there?

This problem with 'adding channels' and trying to record from them shows benefit of being in NI with Sky if you're a rugby fan - we can have RTE/TG4/Setanta if we subscribe and also ITV1/ITV4/BBC Alba all on EPG and easy both to find and record. Must say if I lived in the south I would get Freesat so ITV1/ITV4/BBC Alba would all be easy to find and record.

The good news is that, Estonia v Republic of Ireland international on Friday week aside (and that is a Heineken Cup weekend so there will be no live rugby on terrestrial TV), that's it for live football at weekends on RTÉ until March. The GAA season is over too so really no excuse for RTÉ not to provide live Pro12 coverage from here on.

Just noticed that TG4's HEC coverage is from 11.00pm- 12.15 am on First Friday of the competition. Bit late but looks like they will be covering action from other matches not involving Irish teams which is good news if like me you don't have Sky Sports. S4C highlights programme is an hour earlier and doesn't overlap.

This is where I really wish that UPC still had the ITV digital channels so that we could view their highlights programme on ITV4 in English (even if it's not till Monday evening, like last year). Maybe ITV will somehow fit it on ITV1 this year. After all, if they can fit Aviva Premiership and Liverpool Victoria Cup matches on the channel, why not the Heineken Cup?

TG4's first Saturday night programme of HEC highlights is scheduled for 3 hours to finish after midnight. Surely highlights rather than elongated delayed coverage of the Irish teams would be much better if they are to attract many viewers. Better than no highlights I suppose. Theres loads of games so maybe they'll show bits of every one of them as well as the Irish teams?
