Well not yet he isn't. Don't be so pessimistic =p

The flooding will save him from the brunt of this in tomorrow's papers!

I'm still trying to figure out who it reflects worse on - Gallagher for taking the envelope or McG for the fact that he hangs out with such people!

Hopefully that's both of them finished!

ha, as opposed to gallagher pretending he knew nothing, and then couldn't remember him and then said he could have given him an envelope, and then put a wadful of money into a wrong account by accident - what an upfront guy ;)

at least mmc is upfront about it

you would think so but never under estimate the stupidity of the irish electorate. He was nailed twice tonight, once by the woman in the audience about the money resting in his account and then later by the SF tweet. You'd think it would be enough to sink him but we have a habit of voting in rogues.

I would be interested to see how the papers who have been championing Gallagher are going to spin this now. I would not be surprised to see lots of flood related stories but little on his admission on taking an envelope!

Maybe I'm getting too cynical in my old age but I don't expect any horse changing midrace this time:)

If Gallagher gets in it might not be long before he will have top answer questions re his business.....he appears to be very seedy. Probably appeal even more now to the electorate.

Quite right, Gallagher didn't take any cheques and Martin hasn't been in the IRA since 1974.

Interesting body language as the lights faded. Everybody shaking hands and Gallagher just walking away.

My guess is they all know the implosion means votes going their way and a chance of retaining credibility and their expenses. Some collective kneecapping in fairness.

It looks like Gallagher is the new Bertie Ahern. Irish people are total suckers for the type - nothing seems to stick. Even when people know it's true that he's been up to dodgy stuff, they seem to like him more for it.

The electorate's support for Ahern backfired rather spectacularly when he sunk the economy - I half hope Gallagher gets in and has to resign in disgrace in the next year or two.

the only difference is tho, that the man who gave gallagher the cheque is making a press conference tomorrow. :D

What papers have been championing Gallagher? The media has all been lined up behind Higgins since Norris imploded.

The media has been an utter disgrace, and Mitchell was right, the quality of those questions tonight was horrendous. Christ sake they were vetted questions as well. Pat deserves to be fired.

As bad as the PT debate was it was better than this. Kenny was clearly ruffled after Mitchell decided to throw a wobbler....I thought he was not going to be able to wrap things up.

Never did quite understand how SG got so high in the poles noone I talked to seemed to understand it either, are all FFers afraid to show their true colours until the polls?

Also loved the cheeky smile on Martin McGuinness' face when he knew Sean Gallagher had blew it.

Paddy Power now have Michael D. to win when Sean seemed to have it not long before. Unless they find some serious dirt on Michael D. then say hello to our next president.

Ok, so maybe championing was too strong a word. A better word might be collusion. Does it not seem or did it not seem odd that his evident FF/Entrepenure/Farmer background was not properly explored as fully as other candidates' background? Any decent hack would have found some questions that would, at least, warranted some sticky questions.

    Or is it just me???

Based on his surprising pull in the polls recently I believe that people were expecting him to get hammered from his FF links tonight so much of the effect of the attack on him will be muted

He was left floundering....he appears incapable of articulation. He never knew the guy, then he gave details of his background, then he did not call to his house, then he did, no money, then there was an envelope...could not make it up. He is a prize clown and the way we are at the minute maybe we deserve a clown as president :(

Just you. Gallagher has been getting it in the neck ever since he shot to the top of the polls. The hatchet job he has been subjected to has been unmerciful. If Higgins turns this around and wins, it will be a testament to the power of the media troika (RTE, IT and INM).

The only candidate whose background hasn't been properly explored is Higgins (and Mitchell, but thats because his campaign has been a disaster and they didn't need to muck rake on him too much).

Or could it be, shock horror, he's actually a daycent man and made of poetry and tweed. No skeletons, what a disappointment. Just the temporary Tourette's.

It should be hoped, by all, in the interest of fair play and blah blah blah that the voting public should give the issue of a candidate inviting a convicted criminal to a €5000 dinner some serious thought and judge character accordingly.

I'm not saying hes not a decent man, but I find it hard to believe that a man in politics as long as he has been has not misstep'd along the way. If his record is entirely flawless then he must have achieved nothing because we all make mistakes.

Has anyone actually gone and examined his record?

Ah well, I do loves me a conspiracy! In fairness, Gallagher has hardly been getting it in the neck from the meejia.

I do think it odd also on the Higgins front that issues are a bit light. It could be down to lazy hacking due to all the other low hanging fruit on the other big personalities though.

Are you for real? This campaign has been dirtier than bog-snorkling.

Look at the way SF just kneecapped SG by claiming that they were going to pull out the fuel-smuggler, flushing SG out to make a statement in the debate, and then later denying all knowledge of a press conference. Genius stroke.

If Higgins had skeletons they would be well out of the closet by now don't you think?

OT:Is it me or does Pat Kenny get slimier as the years go by....

Lads this was a classic tonight. I watched the re run again on VB.

    Just brilliant.

As for associating mmg with him. Not got anything to do with it. Quite clearly the issue is the lies more than the nature or the person in question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,162 ✭✭✭Ozymandius2011

He claims he didn't know at the time that he had convictions. He also says he doesn't recollect whether it happened or not.

The credibility of a convicted fuel-smuggler has to be regarded as dubious in any case. In February the Irish Mail on Sunday also reported that the smuggler was leasing out property for Gerry Adams Irish General Election HQ.

no, I'd say it would be from this business -y'know the one FF and Gallagher went to to invite him to the fundraiser for FF, and the one Gallagher went to bring him the lovely picture to hang on his wall - I'd say it would be from there. :D
