    Hi there,

I started in the gym to try and gain a bit of weight. My weight was just over 10 stone. With plenty of weights and lots and lots of eating I managed to gain 1 stone 3 lbs in about 3 months. It was tough going.

I am now 11st 3 and cannot put on another oz... I am eating more than ever. Sometimes I have 8 meals a day.Today I ate 8 eggs with breakfast!

Can anyone please advise me on how to overcome this?

Maybe add some high-calorie food to your diet if it's not already there - peanut butter, nuts of any type (unsalted, unroasted brazil nuts, walnuts, cashews, etc).

OK So more high calorie food then rather than protein.

Any other suggestions? I hate peanut butter

Just protein shakes. I'm eating every 2 hours approx so I'm only drinking one a day. Should I take creatine?

I'm not making smart ass comments, I'm being honest with you. How much of the 17lbs you've gained in 3 months do you reckon is muscle?

In 3 months, unless he's very genetically gifted, I'd hazard a guess of around 7lbs maximum of muscle.

As of always, stick you're daily diet up there.

8 whole eggs or just the egg whites? Egg yolks are very bad for you. And you have to eat a sickening amount of egg whites to get a decent amount of protein. My advice would be to drink a protein shake in the morning, and eat some kind of whole wheat or whole grain.

I think the whole egg yolks are bad for you is a total myth. Could be wrong but I wouldn't be worried personally eating excessive numbers of whole eggs.

Before the wheels come off your thread altogether, maybe describe your training and say if you've made changes to it - volume, intensity, type etc. - over the 3 months. Stick up your diet too - "8 meals a day" could mean a lot of things. Are they the right meals at the right time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 192 ✭✭heno86

you could be overtrained and not allowing for adequate recovery and overcompensation. id hazard a guess your training program isnt the best but you were seeing results because youve never done resistance training before. when starting out most people experience fairly dramatic gains then plateau can you post up your program?

An egg yolk from one average egg contains 70% of your RDA of cholesterol, and 8% of your saturated fat RDA.

If you search for eggs and cholesterol on google, you'll find hundreds of similar studies.

You dont need to be eating every two hours to gain, once you get your calories in during the day, it doesnt matter if its 3 or 6/8 meals

I dont know where to start.....egg yolks are good for you srs..

    this^^^^

But what do what do you mean by the right meals at the right time?

Again, the whole 8 meals theory has been debunked ages ago,
Once you get your calories in thats all that matters

Two types of cholesterol. Eggs contain good kind.

Eggs is bad is from 70s/80s

Well, even the article posted says that the jury is still out on eggs. I certainly wouldn't recommend the OP eat 64% of his daily saturated fat allowance at breakfast, or 560% of his daily cholesterol.

"First, one has to understand that cholesterol is not necessarily bad. Humans need it to maintain cell walls, insulate nerve fibers and produced vitamin D, among other things. Second, there are two types of cholesterol: dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol . Both are important.

Dietary cholesterol is found in certain foods, such as meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, and diary products. The second type (blood cholesterol, also called serum cholesterol) is produced in the liver and floats around in our bloodstream. Blood cholesterol is divided into two sub-categories: High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL), and Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL). LDL cholesterol is considered bad because it sticks to artery walls.

What is bad, however, is the amount of LDL blood cholesterol in the body. Too much of it can cause heart problems, but scientists are now discovering that consuming food rich in dietary cholesterol does not increase blood cholesterol. At least that is what some experts believe (they are somewhat disagreeing on the matter... as usual)."

What I mean by the right meals at the right time is that fuelling properly for training, eating properly for recovering from it and not leaving too long between meals is all as important as what you eat.

You're going to need milk. Lots of milk.

    And Olive oil :)

    Ok

Have you worked out how many calories you need to gain weight?

Are you eating that many or over it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 738 ✭✭✭gymsoldier

I don't think the OP ever regained conscious after hitting that brick wall.

that was for weight LOSS. for weight gain it would definitely help to eat regularly, what with nitrogen balance/blood sugar/insulin and all that craic.

Myth. Also replacing eggs with a protein shake would mean less calories and thus making the problem even worse. If you read any studies on cholesterol in eggs you will see that there is no conclusive evidence to suggest they have negative effects. There are some 'hyper responders' which appear to absorb more of the cholesterol than normal folks but even then their HDL level is increased so the negative effects are again negligible.

Read more. Obviously the only reason the 'jury is still out on eggs' is because there has been no evidence to suggest they cause heart disease or whatever but that belief is so ingrained in people that they still want to prove it.

Why shouldn't he eat 64% of his saturated fat allowance at breakfast?

Is all based on bad science.

Your liver produces far more cholesterol than we consume. A bad diet, regardless of cholesterol levels in the food, will raise blood cholesterol levels.
Overprocessed, deep fried, fatty food are high in sat fat. These are obviosuly bad foods. But all sat fat isnt bad. That's an association error.

Transfats are terrible for us, and they are unsaturated.
Human breast milk has obviously evolved to be near perfect for babies. And its high in saturated fat.

Eat your eggs. Prob the best food out ther at breakfast time.

Weight loss, weight gain it's the same thing..
It's takes 5-6 hours to digest a avg meal so your good with 3, it come down to personnel choice at the end if the day.

3 1000cal meals is still the same amount of cals as 6 500 meals..

If you have hit a brick wall you just need to eat more.

    Here's the steps:
    Take your weight today
Add 500 calories per day, keep your ratios the same
Try to make every day relatively the same food wise
Take your weight in 2 weeks
If you are gaining again - sweet
If not add another 500 and repeat the above

If you think you are gaining too much fat:
Get your body fat measured today as well
    Measure in two weeks
If it increases by too much, mess around with your ratios, perhaps reduce carbs and increase fats or proteins slightly while still maintaining the same calories.

No one knows what works for your body, they can only provide the recommendations brought about from research on other people, but by measuring your own progress, starting with implementing these recommendations, seeing if it works and then start modifying to find what works for you, you'll eventually get to where you want to be
