Warning, very graphic video of a child being run down by a car.

At about 5:20pm a 2 year 2 month old girl was walking on the street when a white van had hit her and had trapped her beneath the car. The driver did not seem to know what had happened and continued to accelerate further crushing the little girl even more."
"The first guy that walked nearby just ignored the girl on the floor and pretended that nothing happened, subsequently everyone else ignored her too."
"Moments later another driver who also seems to not have seen the girl drives over her, further injuring her. After 5 minutes since she first got hit, everybody that walked past did not give a second glance at the girl and just pretended nothing happened and continued to walk past"
"6 minutes have past since she has been hit, a working garbage women who is good of heart sees the child lying on the floor and knew something was wrong, the garbage woman walked over to lift the child to the side of the road but by then the girl has already lost conscious. The garbage woman then went off to call for help. After the mother heard of the news she ran over to help."
"Not even 3 years old. The girl "Yu Yute" (Don't know how to translate her name but you would hear it in the video) is fighting for her life in the critical ward. She is currently in a coma and doctors are unsure if she will survive, if anyone that was around that area at the time please contact the authorities with any information that could help with the investigation"
"In those 6 or so minutes, 19 people had walked passed and had not giving any attention to Yu Yute. Only 1 garbage woman had the heart to help her. Yu Yute's dad said the second car is already being investigated by the police however the first car's number had too much glare to be identified and is currently investigating other ways to track them down"
"Now the parents only have 2 wishes, one that the girl survives and wakes up. The second to capture the first driver who ran the girl over, nothing else matters right now."
*Father then begs on television for help for anyone with information to come forward.

I've been in a similar situation. People will do nothing until either one person does, or the person in the event singles out a person directly to intervene.

    It is quite real apparently.
In China, this kind of situation is referred to as the 'Peng Yu' effect. Before you condemn then, you have to understand their situation. The law right now in China means that many victims of traffic accidents, or people who have fallen ill in the street have actually successfully sued the people that helped them for sums of money that could easily destroy lives, even if there is no evidence that they are the ones that caused the accident (because they were not). There is a China Daily article on this topic.

In a country that executes more than any other, I wonder how willing you would be to potentially implicate yourself in a crime by helping a stranger. Yes, its very sad. But I, for one, find it hard to blame them in this situation. The law needs to change before people can become less suspicious.

    Translation from the cantonese commentary
After the 2 year old girl was run over by the first van, it took a full 6 minutes before a rubbish collector lady stopped to check if she was ok. By then the girl who had been rolling around in pain had already become completely motionless and non-responsive. The rubbish collector lady dragged her over to the side of the road. Her mother, after hearing the commotion, rushed over and picked her up. The girl is currently in critical condition. Her parents say that the only thing that matters now is that their little girl recovers. The 2nd driver who rolled over her legs has already been arrested, but the license plates of the 1st van was obscured by light reflection and cannot be identified. Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Is nobody else wondering why her mother didn't even notice her daughter was gone until she heard the commotion? This is a two year old girl, I mean it's not like you'd expect her to be ok wandering around by herself.

Why would it be unbelievable? It's China.

That's really fcuking brutal though. Even if she survives she'll probably be messed up for life now.

The BBC reports she died "The child, Yue Yue, was taken to hospital for emergency surgery but pronounced brain dead on Sunday, the China Daily reported". Well brain dead anyway poor mite.

As a couple of Chinese people have said on their forums, the country(which hasn't had the greatest regard for human life for a good while) is getting worse in some areas. This is a country where the one child policy carries out forceed abortions on women* near or actually at full term. Newborn infanticide basically, with government and locals tacit approval.

*usually rural women. They dont have much of a voice.

Or a certain mode of teenage thinking that makes jokes about such things. Mostly young men. People who've not faced heavy duty tragedy or make jokes to somewhat nervously distance themselves from the awful reality of things like this. Not unlike getting a fit of the giggles at a funeral. In any event like poo jokes in 8 year olds, 90% grow out of it. So personally while comments in this vein don't sit well with me today, I don't condemn those out of hand for making them. I'd likely have made similar in my teens, only the interweb wasnt around to remind, record and admonish me for my emotional gaucheness. Thank fcuk. The guff me and my mates would have come out with. Sheesh.

This reminds of a story I read a while back. A homeless man stopped a woman being mugged and gets stabbed for his trouble. He is left bleeding to death for hours and no one stops to help him. One guy even stops to take a photo and walks on.

Disgusting. Some people don't deserve to live

I am not going to watch it ,i saw a photo once of a dead baby at the side of the road and people carrying on as normal and that devestated me. To watch this poor child would be worse . Will China ever change?

I've heard about similar things happen in China.. Dead babies left lying in the streets and passers by seem in no way bothered by it. What can you say without sounding like a bit of a xenophobe? Cultural differences.. just doesn't cut it, imh.

Well that's probably the most horrible thing I've ever seen on the internet. Im actually shaking now.

I've seen my share of pretty rotten stuff on the net, and in a way you don't connect with it. That cuts to the bone though, christ you really have to despair about the human race. Fine it's a different country and culture and all that but it shows what humans can be like, most depressing thing I've ever seen.

Its not just China, its nearly everywhere. Its a lack of empity with fellow
human beings. I call these people the walking dead, zombies, Yes it happens here all the time to some degree.
An old women crashed her car into a lamp post, I was near the accident so I went over straight away, opened the car door, asked if she was all right, phoned for an ambulance, patted the blood from her face with tissues, talked to her.
I looked up and the car was surrounded with zombies. leaning on the hood looking in. they were up on top of my back trying to get a good look.
I told the man to get off my back, stood up and pleaded with the zombies
to move back and give this women space to breath.
Of course the slackjawed ones just got worse, they were now sticking
there big thick insenitive heads in through the windows.
Not one of the zombies asked could they be of help.
    Morbid curiosity.

Disturbing attitude of the differences in cultures.

It was sickening on all accounts, from the 1st driver running away, the people ignoring her, the 2nd driver running over her legs, and then realising that she was still alive when she squirmed a bit.

Unfortunately, it's not the 1st time something like this has happened in China, as another poster pointed out with foetus or abandoned babies being left on the path / roadway.

The laws and situations people are put in when they are afraid to help injured people over there really paints an awful picture for the country.

It's strange also in some Asian and South American countries where people are fascinated with taking out their mobile phones and take videos / pictures rather than help / comfort the injured or dying person. There's an almost infinite amount of videos that show this behaviour.

I watched it and was horrified, al-thou it's not the worst thing I've seen on the Internet. Perhaps this is sign of modern times where such horrific incidents are more accessible.

I understand the child passed away RIP

An acquaintance of mine who lives in China reckons its fake. He's no expert in video but he pointed out that almost invariably when an incident happens there, a huge crowd will congregate to gawk. No crowd is in evidence in the footage. He could be talking out of his hat though.

I couldn't bring myself to watch it, too upsetting. How people's primal instincts to protect a child didn't kick in is beyond me. Even the people I know who hate kids would never let one die in the streets...
I know China doesn't have the best track record when it comes to human rights, but Christ alive, this is just outrageous.

Also, why was a little toddler allowed to wander out onto a dark, busy road by herself???

edit: I'm praying this turns out to be fake, like the little girl driving on the motorway.

The worst I read today is that woman in America who had those handicapped people locked up in a boiler room whilst using their identity for social welfare and the like.

This is one of the most vulgar things ive seen. It has questioned my view on the Chinese people as a whole. not because 1 person didnt help her but because doezens didnt help her. Poor child. is there any further info on her state. hope to god she's not dead. but they weren't hoping on much. :( .

The girl is dead. It might sound cruel but I think it's for the better. Rather than being in the brain-dead vegetative state that she was.

No she's not, she's started breathing on her own according to a news source.

I wonder how much of the attitude stems from her being a little girl. In Chinese society female infanticide and female abortion are rife, because of the premium placed on male babies. Orphanages are full of baby girls.

Maybe if it was a little boy people would have cared more. Just makes it more horrible to think about really.

    Update

The condition of the two-year-old girl, Yue Yue, who was severely injured in a hit-and-run accident, is showing signs of stability, Guangdong Daily reported Tuesday.

A video of the incident, captured by a surveillance camera, shows the girl being hit by a white van before being hit by another van a few minutes later on a narrow market street in the city of Foshan in Guangdong province on the afternoon of October 13.

    Toddler: showing signs of stability

After two and a half days of treatment, good news came Monday morning that Yue Yue has regained the ability to take weak breaths with the help of respirator. The rest of her condition, including blood pressure and heart beat, shows signs of stability. However, the child's life is still in danger and she hasn't recovered the ability to breathe upsupported, reported Guangzhou Daily.

    Rescuer gets big rewards

Civilization office of Foshan's Nanhai district on Monday presented 10,000 yuan ($1,570) to Chen Xianmei, a rubbish collector who offered aid to Yue Yue after the incident happened, as a reward for her kind deed, China Daily reported.

Meanwhile, a company in Foshan said that they will donate 50,000 yuan to Yue Yue’s family and the rescuer respectively.

“Besides the reward, we would like to offer Chen a job with stable income so as to encourage this kind of activity,” said an anonymous assistant manager at the company.

Hit-and-run drivers: sorry for the victim's family

As for the two drivers who hit Yue Yue, one was caught by police and the other turned himself in on Monday.

Both drivers said they didn't see the child before the accident happened, according to the police. The first driver who knocked down Yue Yue expressed regret, deep sadness and apologies to the child’s family.

    Apathetic passers-by interviewed

Minutes after the accident happened, a man driving an electric tricycle passed by the injured girl. He looked back for a while before leaving the scene.

The man, surnamed Zhang, later told Guangzhou Daily that he didn't see the child lying on street or any blood stains. "I couldn't see clearly because it was dark then."

About a minute after the man passed by, another young woman holding hand of a little girl passed by Yue Yue. "The girl was bleeding in mouth and ear and crying a little. I was so scared and my girl cried because of fear, therefore, we left," said the woman surnamed Lin.

Another man wearing green cloths looked at Yue Yue from 3 meters away. He was a nearby shop owner. He denied having seen the little girl. "If I saw her, I would definitely have offered help," he said.

However netizens and neighbors do not believe his story. Neighbors talked about him and a netizen even googled his shop online out and criticized him of "lack of conscience". The shop owner said it has made him disturbed.
