Just got gym membership, what should I be doing next?

    I'm 17, 6 foot tall, 12 stone and have a reasonably healthy diet. Back in secondary school I used to do running (1st year mechanical engineer now), but I'm fed up of being a lanky fcuker :D

    My aim is to put on muscle and basically get stronger, may pick up rugby again also (Haven't played in two years).

    I've had gym/pool membership for the last month and as I expected, the pool has been used a lot, while the gym only once with a friend and today for half an hour.

    What I'm looking for really is a guide to follow or what I should be lifting/how I should lift. I don't know much about "good form" only that I shouldn't use my body weight/momentum to lift dumbells.

    As for food, I'll start taking protein supplements on top of the increased amount of normal protein. I used to normally just eat pasta/bread/cheese which is just carbs and fat.

    Absolutely all advice greatly apprieciated! :)

    EDIT: As a benchmark, I can do about 35-45 pushups and about 50 sit-ups if that's at all relevant.

    I'm not an expert by any means but heres my 2 cents..

    You should really get a program from a gym instructor at your gym. Most gyms will do your first program for free. They'll show you what machines to use, what weight exercises to do and most importantly they'll show you how to do it right.

    As for diet, chicken and fish are great sources of protein.

    I'm part of the University of Limerick gym, does anyone know if there is a gym instructor and how would I approach him/her. Do I just informally ask for advice or would he/she take into account my weight etc and do up a program for me?

    Also, love chicken, hate fish :D
