If you're a student living away from home and you have classes on Friday(or if you're planning on heading to coppers/fibber/diceys etc.. on Thursday night to get your hole) you can't get back to the shticks to vote.

Whats on Thursday that "students" can't vote, polling stations are open from 10am until 10pm, does this interfere with you're drinking time?

"Students" in this country have an awful sense of entitlement, tax-payers are already paying for most "students" to attend college!

    Bring back fees!!!

No, but most cant travel hundreds of miles to vote and be in college at the same time, or be there for the mornin

Sounds like they should have updated where they are registered to vote to where they are actually living then.

I left it too late to change my address so am wondering if it's worth driving from Galway to Sligo to vote, €30 on petrol but Mum will have the dinner ready, but then it's 5 hours driving for something I'm not that overly fussed about anyway. The ones I really don't want in don't seems to have a fiddlers chance anyway.

I kinda hope you trolling even if it is a pretty poor effort, but if you not then this is one of the stupidest generalised comments I have read in a long time.

Well its more likely the unemployed stopping off and voting if they're going off to spend their money in the betting shop or pub. pErhaps troll somewhere else.

I don't get this argument at all. If you live away from 'home' then why is it that you're registered to vote only where 'home' is, and not where you actually reside?

    Students can use Postal Voting.

Postal Voting: If you are studying full time at an educational institution in Ireland, which is away from your home address where you are registered

    from here: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/government_in_ireland/elections_and_referenda/voting/registering_to_vote.html

Personally, I thought the voting would take place on a Friday. Doesn't it usually?

Now I have to choose between drunken sluts and democracy.

Majority of students live away from home 8 months of the year for say 4 years,

what if the voting was on a date where the majority of student were residing in their family home and had to commute to their college county for voting? should a student change their address 2 times a year for 4 years?

would it just be easier to hold voting and a Friday when the majority of students return to their family parishes, villages, towns and cities?

That would actually make a lot more sense. I'm not sure why elections are held on a Thursday.. it seems like we're following the British convention of doing it that way. No idea what the reasoning behind it is.

Yeah, 'cos voting on a Saturday wouldn't inconvenience anyone?

There is a choice of 7 days for them to do voting on and each one of them will have someone complaining. It really makes no difference which day they happen on as students will not be turning out to vote on any day though.

    Every election, same threads

But this one is even worse as it doesn't matter where you vote, there is only one constituency [unless you're in Dublin West]

Laziness and procrastination are terrible habits, I'm the worst offender.
But there was close to a month from start of college to get sorted with a postal vote or vote where the college is

I see. I did not know that.

I don't think it should be on a Thursday either... And calling students lazy because they can't get home is ridiculous... I very rarely get home, it's expensive and time consuming when I could be studying/drinking...

How does having the voting on a Friday or Saturday put people out? surely it would help those who not only study away from home or indeed work away from home...

Yes the postal option is just... an option, if everyone was told they had to submit their vote by post I don't think public opinion would be too high...

    This.

Students crying cause they're being inconvenient for a day every 3 years or so.

People in 1916 died so we could vote and now students are moaning cause they have to take an hour bus journey.

    How narrow-minded

I'm a student working for free as part of co-op in Mayo and won't be able to vote unless I get the day off to go back home to Tipperary where I'm registered

People love taking pot-shots at students lately, would you prefer if we didn't bother going and just went straight onto the dole?

So in order to vote during college I should register my address 8 different times? That's a great waste of time/paper/money and a great use of red tape... Also as I said postal voting is not ideal, it's not the easiest way to vote...

I'm just wondering why having it on Friday (where these problems would be eliminated) is a bad thing?

Why didnt you register where you are stayign or register for postal voting. The options are there, you chose not to use them. Moanign about peoples attitudes towards students wont change that.

Why cant you use postal voting ? It being "not ideal" isnt really an answer.

Maybe all the candidates coudl come stand in your living room while you use a special stick made from 500 year old oak to tap the one you choose on the head.

I'm getting the day off to pay 50e to get on a train to come home and vote on Thursday. I didn't re-register because I thought I'd be finished at this stage but my other placement closer to home fell through

Your sweeping generalisations are just ridiculous, you have no idea how hard some students work to keep themselves in college, or indeed they sense of social responsibility they have, hence we are trying to vote... We are not the generation that sold our sovereignty to the IMF, and sold out what those men died for as you so dramatically put it...

I still don't see the problem with having it on a Friday...

In exactly the same way that having voting on a Thursday "puts people out", it's a day when they would usually be doing something else.

Just because a Friday or Saturday would work better for you doesn't mean it would for anyone else. The majority of people of voting age will be living and working from based at their "home" for Monday to Friday. The best way of ensuring that as many of them can turn out as possible is to have voting available for as many hours as possible on one of the midweek days when they are less likely to be traveling away for the weekend or something.

A few students that are registered in the wrong constituency are just an irrelevance.

    its a mad idea:
what about - once you know there will be an upcoming election THEN register your away from home address.
there is still postal voting also

its not like students flatly cannot vote

Yes, and could they then not vote? on the Friday?? It is 10 - 10... I'm sure you'd find 5 minutes...

I for one student will be voting, I'm going to make it happen.

It just doesn't seem logical to me that Thursday is preferable to Friday...

Not really, take the general election last year, why would I re-register and vote in Limerick when I know I'll only be here for another six months?

What about all the people that like to go to their mobile homes down the country for the weekend, what about all the people getting flights and boats to the UK for matches, what about people going to Munster/Leinster/Connaught away games, peopel going away on holidays/weekends away.

Theres always somone that cant make it. Voting is on thursdays, students know this, so they should make arrangements to go home on that day , reregister to vote or register for postal voting. If one of those opions isnt a runner for certain students, they are not trying hard enough.
