Seven Night Tenerife Self-Catering Stay For Two Adults and Up to 2 Children for €189

GroupOn deal this morning that conveniently ties in with reasonable flight prices from Ryanair:

    http://www.groupon.ie/deals/getaways/el-marques-palace/1198412?nlp=&CID=IE_CRM_1_0_0_291&a=2524

€189 for a two bedroom self-catering apartment in Tenerife. Tripadvisor reviews for the complex are all quite good. What I liked about the deal is that it's a proper 2 bed apartment instead of the usual 1 bedroom job that leaves 2 of the family sleeping on the couch. Best prices I'm seeing for similar deals via "last minute" packages are in the region of €1,500 on the Aer Lingus Packages site.

For the first week of December (2nd to 9th) I got flights with Ryanair for €571.92 which brings us to the grand total of €760.92 including one checked in bag and all credit card charges for the holiday. (Granted the Aer Lingus package includes airport transfer but I'm sure I can book that cheap on-line)

Anyone else taking this deal up? Got any good tips for Tenerife in December?

I had a look at the T&C's and it says that you need to go to the meetings and that "no requirement to purchase or something" which sounds like they will try do a time share on it!

Guests are required to attend welcome cocktail and site orientation meeting (no-obligation to buy, sign or join).

Meh, if I have to attend a meeting for an hour or so, what harm. Neither in the position to buy a time-share, nor would I have any interest in one. Not someone that can be "hard-sold" either (working in pre-sales myself so I'm well able to handle salesmen ;))

The reviews on tripadviser for the apartment complex are all good so it could be as simple as the usual "meet-and-greet" you get on package holidays. If not, sure the worst it can cost me is an hour of judging some guys sales pitch!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

i actually used to live 2 minutes up the road from the complex and it's grand. yes, it is a timeshare resort, but don't let that put you off, if you show no interest they won't hassle you about it. if you want a celeb endorsement, sporty spice owns one of the apartments. :)

the upsides are that there's plenty to do locally in los gigantes, puerto santiago and playa de la arena as well as a little further afield, with the only real downside being that the complex is as the top of what is affectionately known locally as 'cardiac hill' so wherever you go, the journey out is always going to be downhill, but the journey home will always be up hill and its a real fecker of a hill by any standards.

having said that, when you're walking up it pissed with friends after a night out, it is a bit of a laugh and the taxi's are cheap and plentiful (and normally mercs).

it's a great spot for scuba diving, whale and dolphin trips, fishing, hiking and you can even visit some of the sites used in scenes from star wars up near the (dormant, but still smoking) volcano and the new clash of the titans (meh, not so much) movie as well as several of others if you're in to that sort of thing.

if you have any questions, just give me a shout. it's been over 10 years since i lived there and i'm ready to go back to catch up with old friends, so i'm all booked up!

edit: also, booking.com has those apartments going for anything up to 900 quid a week, booking direct someone said they got it for 300 pounds for a week. for a comparison, i'm after checking with a mate over there and 1 bed self catering apts. are going for around 210-220 euro per week if booked locally.

These are no big deal , just go to the meeting and dont buy anything yo dont want to. There are loads of deals with the time share / points companys off season. They pretty much give a free week so they can pitch you a sale. A good example is Sunset Beach in Malaga which is owned by FBD but an entire floor is time share. You could actually ring them and "enquire" about the system . They would invite you out for a week for 50e off season to have a chat. I have been their twice as a mate owns a time share so he gets free weeks for friends and family witht the only snag that you are asked to go to a meeting with a rep. The only thing I would say is that if you are trigger happy with buying then be careful as the sales pitch is damn good. Think Al Picino in Glengarry Glen Ross !!!

lol, as I said, I'm in pre-sales myself so all I'll be leaving the pitch with is at most a few tips and at least an exchange of an hour of boredom for a cocktail ;)

it really is a lovely area and i used to know a guy who's dad has one of those apartments so i've been in them and they're actually really nice and tidy with decent sized balconies and plenty of room inside.

there's a supermarket 2 minutes walk down the road and a small shopping centre too in the sister apartments of this place, but there's also plenty of places to eat out and the food is cheap enough that you could spend the whole week eating out very cheaply.

there's also plenty of bars and stuff nearby and there's a poolside bar as well in the hotel (think they also do snacks) if you don't fancy going very far.

the whole area is very nice imho too, much nicer than las americas or los christianos (where most people go), it's very family friendly (our 1st baby will be 7 months when we go out there) and there are lots of regular visitors as well as what the locals call 'swallows', who are retired people who spend their winters out there for the good weather.

that said, it's still got plenty of bars and clubs and you can stay out all night if you really want to as well, so its got a nice mix of both sides of the holiday coin.

personally, the best times to go would be for the 3 kings (spanish christmas) celebrations at the start of january (afaik the 4th and 5th, but double check to make sure) or during the massive local carnival in march. we've just booked up ours for March 2nd to the 9th so we can catch the local carnival which starts on the 1st March as it really is a great time to visit if you want to get the most out of it as there's parades and music and fireworks and loads of local culture to soak up and enjoy.

it's warm enough all year round (99% of the time, at least during the day) at sea level that you could spend christmas day sunbathing and look up and see snow on top of the volcano (or even drive about 1.5h up there and have a snowball fight!). :)

in august it can get to significantly more than 40 degrees at times and even the locals have trouble coping with that, so avoid those times if possible.

i actually spent most of my time living there sleeping on a pull out sofa on a balcony and usually it was with just a single sheet on the bed, no duvet or anything.

also, something we did notice when booking our flights is that there don't seem to be any flights on a friday from april onwards and aer lingus don't do friday flights at all, so it's ryanair or nothing if you want to fly direct, unless you fancy a stopoff in the UK first.

all in all my wife and i are pretty psyched about it as it's where we first met 11 years ago (she moved out for a year and her best friend and lots of our other friends still live there) and now we'll be going back for a holiday to our old home. :)

anyway, if anyone is going out for that week in march then let me know and we can have a few drinks and i'll point you in the direction of all the best stuff to do and see. :)

Have 3 kids, so rang them up to see if we could avail seeing as on their website these rooms accommodate up to 6.
No go, they said strictly as per the deal, 2 adults and 2 kids, they wouldn't even accept 2 adults and 1 kid!!!

Even though from a re read, the offer states "Limit 1 per 2 adults and up to 2 children ", Hmmmm, maybe they actually meant 2 adults, not 1 adult....

we've only got 1 kid and they didn't have any problems with it.

just smuggle the 3rd kid in with your luggage and say nothing. :pac:

afaik, the bedrooms are usually one double and one twin, but you could easily get a kid on a sofa.

Why even tell them tbh? Just leave the eldest kid (or mum/dad and the youngest) out in a café somewhere while the rest of you check in.

How does the deal work - you buy the deal, then wait for the voucher when the deal closes and then book it or have you guys booked already?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Voucher comes within an hour or so. Once you have the code you email the company to book your dates. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 530 ✭✭✭Dutchy

So can two adults go with no bambinos? Whilst it's a good deal, I'm not sure if it's worth starting a family in order to avail.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

I'd say email the company offering the deal through GroupOn directly: reservation@intercorpgrp.com

Since GroupOn would be taking about half of anything they make through what they sell on the site, I'm sure they'd do you a good price for different sized groups?

Anyone know if there's a Tenerife / Canary Islands version of dealpage.ie?

Looking at the Yellow Submarine trip which looks great but even including the 15% discount offered on their site for on-line booking would cost €129.20 for a family of 4!

    http://www.submarinesafaris.com/t/uk/index.html

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 215 ✭✭crank_1975

I would love to book this too and although I have kids I would rather not bring them this time, so if anyone can advise if you can just go as 2 adults please let us know!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

There'd be nothing from stopping you booking this and just arriving without them but if you emailed the address I gave above, they'd be able to tell you if they can do a better deal for a couple on their own (since you'd only need a 1 bedroom apartment).

must say I much prefer the other end of Americas down by los criostianos and accomodation isn't too expensive down there. However a deal is a deal.......

it does say "up to" 2 children, so technically speaking 0 is less than 2 so still "up to". :)

not off the top of my head, but it's worth noting that the yellow submarine works out of san miguel which is near the airport so it's over 40km away from where you'll be staying.

if you want to get close to the action, i'd recommend a "try dive" at los gigantes dive centre instead. it's a 10-15 minute stroll from the hotel and you can bring the kids (assuming they're not too young, i'm checking the minimum age now) it will be cheaper and you'll be close enough to touch the fish, rather than sitting in a tin can. :)

they also do a 'discover scuba' thing so you can try out all the diving gear in a swimming pool if you're worried about being in the sea, so you're not out in the open water when you first try it. that way if you decide you like it, you can book a try dive out in the sea afterwards.

it's not at any end of las americas or los christianos, it's on the west coast of the island and the entire area is infinitely better than either of the above imho.

personal preference imho, i like being near all those tacky british karaoke bars and 30+ age group. Once you keep away from veronica strip......

Does anyone know the weather conditions late December or January? Can we enter in to the sea during winter? Thanks.

the water temp around december january will be between 18-20 degrees depending on the weather at the time.

i used to dive there year round and only ever wore the bottom dungaree part of a 2 piece 7mm wetsuit (i.e. no top/jacket) and never had any problems, although after 2-3 dives in a day you'd be a tad on the chilly side.

BUT assuming it was a sunny day without too much wind there would be no issues with swimming in the sea all year round as a tourist, although you wouldn't see many locals doing it as they would be more acclimatised to the weather and 18-20 degrees is fooking freezing when you're used to it being hot.

there's actually a nice public swimming pool in los gigantes right next to the marina (10-15 minutes walk from the hotel) that also has a tidal rock pool fed directly from the sea, complete with plenty of fish so you can have the best of both worlds without having to worry about it being too cold.

that's the thing, the puerto santiago/los gigantes area is perfect for that kind of holiday, lots of people of that age group plenty of karaoke and cabaret bars, lots of nice restaurants and plenty to do, but still plenty quiet enough if you want to relax for a week without the droves of stag/hen do's and football hooligan's that las americas and los christianos are famous for.

I did a couple of 'try dive' in Malta years ago and absolutely loved it. Given the choice I'd love to spend the week getting the PADI Open Water cert but since the kids are 3 and 6, I'll have to wait til they're a bit older for it. ;)

Brill.... didn't want to have to borrow someone's dustbin lids just to avail! Seems to good to be true.... As previously mentioned, if all we have to do is listen to some dude go through his sales pitch while supping a cocktail, then fine. No chance of me buying a timeshare anyhow!

vibe666, you seem to be the expert - having lived there and all! From what you are saying it seems to be the type of place you can still sit by the pool/beach in your swimmies for a bit of sunbathing (or take a swim without getting hypothermia) in January? The fact that it is nice and relaxed but just a short walk from the main drag is great too.... getting too old to be putting up with gangs of clubbers off their face and ruining our buzz.
God, I sound like Victor Meldrew....

sunbathing all year round, obv. depending on the weather, but you'd be lucky if it rained in that part of tenerife 6 times a year and there was one year when i was there where it rained properly only once, although it was a torrential downpour that was throwing manhole covers 4 feet into the air due to the water pressure in the drains, but that really was only a once off. :D

it is sometimes windy and the sea can be rough from time to time, but for the most part it's a paradise island for the weather. if you took a boat from the canaries and sailed directly east, the first thing you get to is the sahara desert (or the sahara beach being as you'd be on the coast! :)) and you are more or less right above the equator which is why it's so popular all year round.

also worth mentioning that there's a big english speaking ex-pat presence out there and as a result of that and the number of english speaking tourists most of the locals will speak decent english too, so no problems with the language barrier if you don't speak spanish.

i find pools are cold and quite empty whereas beach is much nicer and water is pleasant. Nights can be a tad brisk so bring a light jumper.
airport isnt far with set taxi rates, 25 to get to las America's. If you want to go to Lori parquet, rent a car for the day as its a long way but well worth it. Dont forget Siam park.

of course we'd all PM'd each other before we flew out, but it was an amazing holiday all the same and we're all still friends. :)

a bunch of boardsies had all booked various weeks and met up there before and after we were there too and all had an equally fab time from what i heard.

yes, i probably should have said cardigans for the ladies in the evenings and to leave it a little while for the sun to get on the pool before you dive in. :p

that said, this is where i slept, every night (well, sometimes not till the morning :D) when i lived in los gigantes (for 3.5 years).

    balcony.jpg

all the time i was there, the only times i ever slept indoors was one time when i had the flu, the rest of the time i was out on the pull out sofa on the balcony and it was never too cold or too windy as long as the blind at the side was down, the front blinds stayed up most of the time unless it was really hot during the day and we wanted to keep the sun out.

check for available flights using www.skyscanner.ie.

ryanair are the ONLY ones who do friday flights to Tenerife South airport (use the abbrev. 'TFS' on flight websites the same as you'd use 'DUB' for Dublin), BUT they aren't doing Friday flights from April onwards as far as I can see (no idea why).

We're booked up from Fri 2nd to Fri 9th March flying with Ryanair, just in time to take in the Carnival. :)

ah i was looking from shannon :(ok another question how far away from airport is apartments so how much for cab??also how much is parking in Dublin??i need to have the whole total you see before i tell himself:rolleyes:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

You can get a parking quote from the Dublin Airport site. Much cheaper if you book on-line rather than just turning up:

    http://www.dublinairport.com/gns/to-from-the-airport/car-parking.aspx

Check http://quickpark.ie/ for your dates as well, they can be cheaper and finally, http://www.parksmart.ie seem to check a number of the airport hotel's parking prices (I know Bewleys offers can be quite good at times).

    Bewleys Hotel and QuickPark

The apartments look to be about a 45 minute trip from the airport judging from Google Maps, not sure how much that'll come to with a taxi but transfers are usually reasonable enough (again, look for someone who'll take a pre-booking).

i'll be going with locally myself, the airports have a captive audience so they're likely to be more expensive and you won't need a car for the whole 7 days anyway imho, so it would be a waste.

you'll want to arrange airport transfers via coach though (i'd check with the apartments/resort people to see what they recommend) so that would need to be factored in. you *could* get a taxi, but it's over 40km to puerto santiago from the airport, so it might be pricy, but i'll confirm that with a friend to get the actual cost and let you know.

i actually have a mate who has a hire car business out there so i'll check with him on prices and let you know about that too. :)

Auto Reisen - older cars, but very cheap :)

Just took a look at their site rocky, very impressed that they include child seats in the rental price!

Quoting me €102 for the full duration of our stay for a Citroen C2. Not bad at all. Taking transfers to and from the airport out of that and it works out very cheap to have the car for the week (which could be useful from the description of this "cardiac hill"!

jesus, that IS cheap. just waiting to hear back from my mate, but the taxi is apparently about 50 quid each way, although there are airport coach transfers available but at that price it would almost be too expensive NOT to get a car. :)

you'd want to make sure that you get the 'all in' price though. we booked a car when we got married in portugal and they demanded a large security deposit off a credit card, or cash as well as 'extra' insurance (which i'm guessing is where they make their money) and wouldn't give us the car without it. i'd already paid for the car in advance, but this wasn't included and as we were getting married out there we didn't have any spare room on the credit cards so we were almost very stuck.

once you know that's the price you'll pay when you get there and there aren't any hidden extras that's a great price tho imho.

First time in Tenerife we booked with Goldcar, they neglected to tell us about the fuel return policy - you pay extra for a full tank of petrol. Try to get it down to empty in 7 days...

No such nonsense with AutoReisen, what you see is what you pay. We got a Citroen C3, a bit older than the Focus from Goldcar, but at least didn't go into 'safe mode' on the motorway on Sunday evening while returning from Santa Cruz. Twice.

most of the ones i've used give you the choice of either paying for the tank, or opting to let them re-fill it when you drop it back and charge you for what you'ce used, but usually at an inflated rate, so i usually fill it to the brim before i drop it in, so it's full and they don't charge you at all for fuel then.
