    Hello everyone,

I wonder could you give me a bit of advice...I've recently cut out grains from my diet because I've heard it could be aggrevating my eczema which I get at the back of my head and sometimes in my ears and rumour has it's not great for us Irish anyway. I haven't been eating bread for a while anyway but had a bowl of porridge every morning, which I've cut out since last week but I feel KNACKERED. Never felt this kind of fatigue before and I'm presuming it's because I've cut the porridge out. I felt absolutely fine before this. I haven't adjusted my diet in any other way. Here's what I had yesterday, for example:

    Breakfast:

    2 boiled eggs
    Large slice of melon
    Kiwi fruit
Cup of tea with coconut milk (delish...try it!)

    Lunch:
    Lentil soup
Sald with beet root, goats cheese, lettuce, tomato, tin of tuna and seasame seeds with olive oil and balsamic vinegar

    Dinner:

    Piece of haddock
    Stir fried veg
Large slice of melon and another kiwi
    Small mini twix

I'm not at all hungry but when I put that down, it doesn't look like much. I usually this kind of diet everyday as I'm legging it around a lot, work long hours and don't have time to spend on mealsWhat could I add to my diet to give me more energy? I've definitely noticed I'm lacking since cutting the porridge out and I've had plenty of sleep.

Edit: I'm not looking to lose weight. I'm 5 foot 5 and just under 9 stone and am happy with that. Just want to maintain the weight I am but have more energy.

    Eat alot more fat,

If your not getting your energy from carbs anymore, your gonna have to teach your body to start gettin its energy from fat, do this by having an abundance of it.

Take supplements, cook with coconut oil, have butter on your eggs and veg, eat some streaky bacon, fattier cuts of meat, the darker chicken - thighs, legs,

    have some linseed or flaxseed?

Also, at a stretch i'd imagine the above example of a common day has maybe 1200-1400 calories in it, so maybe have a little more for breakfast or lunch, the extra fat will increase the calories anyway, should you choose to follow my advice.

    Buckwheat noodles

I feel the same but it's due to not eating enough healthy fats the last two days.

I don't know how people who advocate a low carb and low fat dirt survive

:( To be honest, I don't really know what I'm doing. I don't advocate a low carb diet necessarily, just the grains. Just wanted to give it a go. Might start eating spuds again. I cook my veg in olive oil and stick olive oil on my salads. Prob not enough. Dont' want to eat meat (bar fish), so the bacon is definitely out. I haven't eaten meat regularly for years.

Will take the other advice though...

What would I put them flaxseed and linseed on? Just sprinkle it on my fish or something?

There's no such thing as good fats and bad fats, only essential fats and non-essential fats. I'd recommend eating more fruit and vegetables and potatoes to keep your energy levels up.

    What about trans fats?

    What about trans fats?

You don't need them, hence non-essential.

Have a sweet potato with your dinner and as has been said already I'd put kerrygold (apparently one of the best butters in the world) on your veg, as much as you want.

ha ha, I love that, you say it like its such a guilty pleasure. Is there a big mini twix by the way ? :D

Anyway, back to the point, given that you don't eat much meat, how are your iron levels ?

Good advice on the sweet potato. And real butter is the way to go also! I've also given up the porridge with a view to taking a more primal approach with my diet.

Things I generally squeeze in my daily diet would be:
    Homemade smoothies:
Coconut Oil (Tea Spoon), (Full Fat) 400ML Coconut Milk, linseed/flaxseed (TBL spoon) and berries + scoop or 2 of protein whey, throw them in a blender/smoothie maker and you're good to go, keeps hunger at bay for hours! I'd probably have this maybe once or twice per week for my breakfast or for lunch sometimes. Just chill the coconut milk tin in the freidge for a couple of hours before hand or overnight.

Omlettes, omlettes, omlettes...lash them into ya like there's no tomorrow. With bacon, mushrooms, peppers, parmesan cheese, goats cheese, chicken or plain if you like. Don't be afraid to use 3 or 4 eggs if hungry. I usually have omlettes with a mixed salad.
    Scrambled eggs is another option.

Chicken breast/steak/bacon/fish with mixed veggies, stir fries.

Egg plant based home made pizza.

For snacks maybe a tea spoon or 2 of almond butter, handful of macadamia nuts. Loads of goodness there! The nut butters and the nuts have a hoooooooooooggggggeee impact on my energy levels. Speaking of energy levels have a look at making your own paleo bars, they're bleeeeeediiinnnn lovely! Transform's (he regularly posts around these parts) web-site should have it some where if you search for it: www.dominicmunnelly.ie or check this out www.marksdailyapple.com

I feel sooo much better since i've been eating like this loads more energy no bloating or any of that jazz either! :D
    Hope this helps.:)

Oh, oh, oh, and dark chocolate, darker the better baby! go 70% plus. Put this in in place of your mini twix. I don't each the usual sugar laden chocolate anymore and stick with the darker stuff.

Yes went through a phase of eating roasted sweet potatoes everyday, so going to get back on that buzz again.

Will try this. Lots of people recommending coconut milk...why? Is it it's fat levels? And is it good fats? I put it in my tea and drink maybe 5 cups of tea a day. I'd go through a can in maybe 4 days. Wil try this shake.

Yes! I keep meaning to make these but my only concern is overdoing it on eggs. You hear conflicting info on how many eggs a day you should eat and I already have 2 in the morning...I'm wondering if I had an omlette in the evening, would that be too many eggs? Suppose I could replce the eggs in the morning with the shake.....how many eggs per day CAN you eat?
Chicken breast/steak/bacon/fish with mixed veggies, stir fries.

I already eat fish (I don't eat other meats) and veg.
Egg plant based home made pizza.

    Intriguing....

Bought some nuts tonight to snack on. I usually generally just snack on fruit and I don't have too much of a sweet tooth anymore, so generally don't eat biccies, cakes etc. Just don't have the craving anymore.

The mini Twix was a once off :o (can't believe I'm justifying a mini Twix haha) for my long ride home from work on the Metro. If I do eat something sweet, it generally is dark chocolate 72%.

Thanks for the advice. Will defo go the Omlette route. One thing I've noticed though, since giving up the porridge and replacing it with eggs, I don't feel hungry 'till about 3pm and I usually have my breakfast about 6. Just need to get the energy back up again. Thanks!

Haha, yeah pathetic! I've one little Twix and I feel guilty telling you healthy-heads. Generally I don't eat sweet stuff though...only on occasion. Suppose the less you eat of it, the less you crave. Wouldn't deny myself of it if I felt like it though.

Welll I've never suffered from fatigue until the past week and I haven't been eating meat for a number of years (except when I go home to Ireland and I can't refuse) and have always felt grand. I generally take a multivitamin though. Perhaps I need to up my quantity of green veg. ..

Not sure where I'd buy Kerrygold in Spain...I cook them in Olive oil though...kind of the same, maybe?

I think it comes down to what you are replacing grains with (I won't mention the twix...). You can replace them with other carbs (potato etc...) or with fat. I'd recommend fat as it will keep you hungry for longer and is healthier for you

Also, it could be possible that you are experiencing 'carb flu' - withdrawal symptoms from lack of carbs, or else withdrawal symptoms from the lack of wheat opioids.

    Tea with coconut milk......wat?!

Yes coconut products are the dogs......, the saturated fat content is massive but they have several benefits:

These are the easiest meal to make in the history of the world. Even my wife can't live without them now at this stage. Eat as many eggs as you like (obviously this also needs to fall within your daily kcal allowance) as long as you consume the other key nutrients throughout your day as part of a balanced diet.
