well there isn't really any competition to drive the prices down when you think about it and we'll be waiting a long time for the legislation route.

354% does seem a little excessive though. That's why the news is in!

Doesn't matter, the drug payment scheme pays for most of it... Oh wait, we pay for that don't we.

It's rather more like 'Private enterprises fail to engage in competition in order to drive prices down, which makes rather a mockery of the concept of the open market and demands some sort of regulation!'

I will admit, yours is catchier though.

Popcorn in the cinema is another. I'm sure we could find a few more examples but the thread was highlighting the Pharmacy mark ups..

Its madness, they only get away with this because most of that mark up is paid for by the state, well the taxpayer.

Count the amount of chemists with-in 2 miles of you I bet its over 10, this will give you an indication as to how profitable their business is. This rank cartel profiteering has to be stopped.

Another news flash; chip shops have a 500% mark up on chips.
Think i'll have to huff and puff with moral outrage like Ray D'Arcy I mean food is a necessity right?
F'nn Pharmacists they should work for free and give people meds for free paid for out of their own pockets.
How dare they try to earn a living!!!
Didn't you know Pharmacists are totally responsible for global warming and the recession?

    to clarify that....

    they charge up to 354%.
that could be one pharmacy selling one particular drug at such a mark up.

From the comments underneath the piece.
I buy the generic drug Atorvastatina in Spain which is direct equivalent for Lipitor .
Cost in Spain for Atorvastina is €16.25 Cost of Lipitor is Ireland €65.77. On top of which I do not need to pay €65 for a prescription. Where is the reality

People need to wise up and start sourcing generic meds from as cheap a reliable source as thhey can.

    misleading headline grabber is misleading
the 354% mark up applies to selling TO Pharmacists! if they get raped on prices then the consumer gets that cost passed onto them, so its nothing to do with your local pharmacy, its just bollox

Yep. I'm more than willing to join a 'drop the bloody price of orange squash' thread too. Although people seldom need daily injections of orange squash.

    This isn't a good comparison.

Many drugs keep people alive and healthy and are not a choice. Also, when it comes to health people are often vulnerable especially older people who come from the 'trust authority' times.

Pharmacists who engage in massive mark-ups should be ashamed of themselves.

They earn a very good living, they are more PS workers as the government drugs payment scheme are paying the bulk of the wages.

    Poor comparison.

Fast food is not a necessity and not eating it will not threaten your well being. Many people have no choice but to take medicines.

I'm sure you're aware of this.

The IMB (who are in on the whole cartel/scam and in the pockets of thepharma industry) will prevent you from importing cheaper generic meds. Its a complete joke and needs to be sorted out.

A few months ago, while on holidays my girlfriend suffered some accute allergic reaction.
Doc prescribed medication and off to the pharmacy we went
It was cough syrup, nose drops, anti-biotics and something for her stomach.

    Total cost: €16

Now explain to me why the same would have left you with hardly any change from €100 in Ireland.

Always ask for the generic brand of whatever drug you are getting on prescription. there's massive savings to be had.

I haven't a clue. I'm lucky enough to be reasonably healthy. Just an inhaler every month or two.
