Am interested in buying a boat & trailer; budget €5,000; primarily intended for inland waterway use - canals, rivers, lakes. Hold at least 4 people. Know nothing about boats. Looking for recommendations on types of boat, key features to look out for, maintenance.

Hi veseyl there are lots of boats out there that will suit your needs at a good price the main thing to look out for is the engine as that will be worth more than the boat in most cases and can cost the price of the boat to get fixed  so if you can go for as new an engine as you can afford try and get a service history and bring someone with you that knows engines to have a look before you buy. I take it when you say "hold at least 4" you don't mean to sleepover or just a long open boat but something like this http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/boats/2627861 it has a 2004 90hp but if you are not looking for speed spend your money on a newer smaller engine or if you can a boat with a backup engine also. Next have a good look at the trailer and make sure it's safe and sound for towing, look for signs of regular maintenance like clean grease around the nipples and good tyres , next look at the boat for any signs of bad repair jobs like lumps in the fiberglass or the lines of the boat not running true, if everything does not tick all your boxes move on to the next boat till you find the one your happy with it's a buyers market so take your time and look at as many as you can before you make your choice. If you only have €5000 to spend aim to spend €4000 and leave enough to get the engine a full service including new impeller and new wheel bearings for the trailer and any other bits and pieces.
    Best of luck.
