Is there anything in your life you really regret?

There's only three moments in my life I really regret and shudder when I think about them.

One was when I was about 16. I was sitting somewhere when this girl I really liked sat down next to me. Like really close. Thought she wanted to be close to me and was putting my arm on the chair behind her, getting comfortable...when I realised I was sitting on some sheets she wanted to get. Worse, when I stood up, I discovered my ass had mangaled the sheets which were a petition she had got loads of people to sign. Just completly ruined. So embarrassing :(

Second was at a debate I was part of in fifth year. Finals of the concern competition. Went up to close the debate with our teams final speech when I noticed someone had left a card up on the podium. In a brain fart moment, I thought it was the other teams and thought I'd be polite and throw it back to them. As I handed them the card, the crowd went "Ooooh" as if I'd passed them a bad note or something. I tried to explain myself but I could see the judges thought I was handing them something bad. Worse, a few seconds later I realised one of MY team had gone just before me so it was one of my own team's cards. Felt so stupid and in front of a crowd of 400 people, I felt like an idiot.

Third was when a girl I really liked basically asked me out and I didn't realise till a few hours later. We had been working on a college project and afterwards we had the following conversation...

Her: "So what you doing now?"
    Me: "Don't know."
    "Think I'll go get lunch."
"Cool. Think I'll head to the class."
"Really? It's not really an important one."
"Yeah, but I reckon I'll still go."

Only a few hours later I realised there was something between the lines I was missing. This has, sadly, happened a few times for me, but this was with a girl I really was interested in. Was quite embarrassed and it was day of Xmas break so didn't see each other for 6 weeks. When we were back in class, we never got talking again. Not till last day of term. She walked past me once while I was reading some notes before an exam. She walked by me a second time, me still reading. She walked by me a third time, sighed and then just started talking to me. Last day of term, I was focused on the exam. Kept an eye out for her after the exam but couldn't see her, haven't seen her since and she has no facebook or anything. Chances are I'll never see her again and I regret not actually picking up the courage to ask her out. Sad, I know :/

So what about you AH posters? Is there any moments that you truely regret? Missed opportunities you rue? Things done you wish you could take back?

When I was 18 I gave a hot girl a lift home from the pub.

"My family aren't home yet. Would you like to come in for coffee?"

"No thanks, I don't drink coffee."

    "Oh ok, see you then."

I had to pull the car over when the realisation hit me on the way home. That's what happens when you spend your youth in a relationship. You become stupid when it comes to the opposite sex.

    Ah mild embarrassment.

Wait until later in life - that's when the real regrets start kicking in.

Not much really that I can think of.

A few bad decisions were made but I've lived and loved so I'm pretty happy with them.

Some of the stuff I said to my parent and the way I treated them in my youth. Let a few good friends down too.

Not making enough mistakes - being to careful and not wearing my retainer - sounds dumb ass but if no one explained the future value of things to me I just couldn`t relate them to current events.

Perhaps she was just offering you coffee?

If she was that keen she would have offered you a soft drink/tea as an alternative.

    2 girls 1 cup.

What you see cannot be unseen, I even tried washing my memory with whiskey.

The only thing you can really regret is something that still affects you to this day and beyond. Anything else was just another dot along the learning curve of life.

Very few of these actually seemed to be honest or appeared to leave a twang of remorse in the person saying it. It's a very hard question to answer though and even if you can answer it, it can be quite hard to share with someone especially to a random camera man on the street. I know I have a lot of regrets and i'm only 21. I've never shared those regrets with anyone before, i'm still young and some of them are still fresh, fair play to those on this video that genuinely shared their lives with the camera.

I regret not talking to my father more. We didn't get on badly really (apart from the usual things like my music being too loud) but I never really confided in him about things.

I regret not standing up for myself in school. I'm not saying violence solves anything, but there were some morons I really should have stood up to but didn't.

It was embarrassing to levels where I still get annoyed when I think about them. I know they are relativly minor embarrassments in the grander scheme of things and life.

And I know "You had to be there" is a cop out but it was the way it was said and the situation involved that makes me reckon it was giving off signals. :P

Not asking a girl out when I know she really liked me, being too shy at times and not staying in college. Still being too shy but not ass bad as I used to be :D

As a Teen i did'nt listen and evaluate or think out things at all only blustered through the years and it was a very long time before i began to listen properly.I was taking too much interest in girls far too young and listening to other fools. As a young fellah i thought the silence of the old was a sign of no brains and wrinkles as further evidence that past 40 everything deteriorates ....I read a lot of trashy papers and mags so i must be smart. I was a Gob****e for a long time and i wont say how long.I'm too ashamed really i know now why my mother used to worry about me.My father was bewildered with me.

Telling everyone in the college bar that my boyf couldn't get it up... It only happened twice when he was hammered but i took it he didn't fancy me any more and was getting the story out before he could dump me.... He didnt dump me...at least not until his friend told him what I'd done.... I still regret that nearly 10 years on - what a f*ing bitch I was!!

    None.

Of course there's things I'd have done diffrently in life, if I had another chance.

All in all though,it's hard to have regrets if you've done your very best in life with the knowledge you have available to you at the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,314 ✭✭✭BOHtox

You're born, you die, and in between you make a lot of mistakes. I've several. Just try put them aside and concentrate on your life. BTW, a few people in that video said they regretted not doing things in college. This is my first year in college.
    What should I do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭newme2006

i think its the kind of question you cant really answer until the end of your life, generally decisions made may not impact straight away and it may take years to notice their impact on your life..

i can pick out things in my life, but when i give a wider view of my life, i see that alot of these shaped my life and i see that in my life i have taken a few chances and held back on other occasions.. i dont think i really regret anything.. even the bad decisions although bad at the time, made sense in time.
