Having watched the RTE programme about the property crash the other night, it begs the question:

Who are the poor in modern-day Ireland?

The beggars conning people out of millions of euro a week?

The ones conning the V de P and the SW?

    Over to you........

There are no poor in Ireland, only relatively less rich. If you want to see poor go to South America, Africa, Eastern Europe etc.

Straight from the source OP, Combat Poverty Agency
Another quango set up for jobs for the boys
In Ireland, 11 basic items are used to construct the deprivation index:

Without heating at some stage in the last year
Unable to afford a morning, afternoon or evening out in the last fortnight
Unable to afford two pairs of strong shoes
Unable to afford a roast once a week
Unable to afford a meal with meat, chicken or fish every second day
Unable to afford new (not second-hand) clothes
Unable to afford a warm waterproof coat
Unable to afford to keep the home adequately warm
Unable to afford to replace any worn out furniture
Unable to afford to have family or friends for a drink or meal once a month
Unable to afford to buy presents for family or friends at least once a year

Yes, taxpayers pay for people to do this research and come up with these lists
In Ireland, relative income poverty is measured by calculating the median income - the mid-point on the scale of all incomes in the State from the highest to the lowest - and setting the line at 60% of the median. People whose incomes fall below this line are said to be at risk of poverty. The most recent figures show 14.1% of the population at risk of poverty.

So if times are good and average wages like the average industrial wage go up, then welfare has to be increased to match or people get "left behind"

I think that means if you can't afford unnecessary luxuries, you're poor and we should all be filled with shame at our own failures to provide you with a handout to pay for beer and selection boxes.

This should go down well on AH

Efficiency and progress is ours once more
Now that we have the Neutron bomb
It's nice and quick and clean and gets things done
    Away with excess enemy
But no less value to property
No sense in war but perfect sense at home:

The sun beams down on a brand new day
No more welfare tax to pay
Unsightly slums gone up in flashing light
    Jobless millions whisked away
At last we have more room to play
All systems go to kill the poor tonight

    Gonna
Kill kill kill kill Kill the poor:Tonight

    Behold the sparkle of champagne
    The crime rate's gone
    Feel free again
O' life's a dream with you, Miss Lily White
Jane Fonda on the screen today
    Convinced the liberals it's okay
So let's get dressed and dance away the night

    While they:
Kill kill kill kill Kill the poor:Tonight

    People with no money. Duh.
But still, as many beggars as I see around Dublin I'll never forget the poor lad who died outside Londis on Grafton St. Passed out, stone cold with a cup with around €2 in it next to the shop on a Monday morning. It was so horrible to see :(

The poor are those that get up every day to go to work, pay their mortgages and bills and have very little left for anything else once bills have been looked after.

The perception is that those on SW who are also getting rent supplement and allowances for everything else are the poor but theyre not. Theyre well off in comaprison to many working people...they have no money worries, theyre not stressing about not being able to pay bills or their mortgage, they have a medical card for their medical needs, if things get tight (money wise) they go crying to their community welfare officer and generally theyre looked after.

The poor are the people who wear €100 runners, €80 tracksuits and €60 football jerseys. Whilst puffing on their €8.65 cigarettes.

'Poor' is a term that does'nt have a precise enough definition .....there are 'poor' middle class people struggling with morgages and 'poor' innercity people struggling with expensive habits so WHICH OR WHAT definition are we talkin' about????????????????????????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

We have a joke at work with few people:

"what are you talking about! I can't afford it! I am not on social welfare!"

Poor people in Ireland - idiots who work full time and pay for theyr own rent, food, entertainment, kids.

Me and misses work full time and haven't taken a penny from social welfare. We can't even dream about luxury of having kids. We couldn't even afford to get a puppy as we bouth work and there wont be anyone at home to look after it while it's small.

Couple I know has 2 kids bouth work part times ( shady ) and get social welfare. Get child benefit and rent allowance etc. Medical cards. They are on third holiday this year. 2-3 weeks each...

They are on social welfare, but why I feel like a poor man...

Save some money, if you want to see poor people take a bus into Dublin.

Sweet jesus, i've seriously had enough of reading this consistant shyte on boards relating to how being on sw is a walk in the park. First and foermost it is not as simple as people seem to think, you cannot just walk into your local sw office and say, " Hi, im a bit short pal, can you give me a few quid "

There is a system in place which requires you to present a hell of a lot of proof adhering to you financial situation.

You have many many interviews to ensure that you are not trying to play the system.

And then, if you are lucky, after about six weeks, you may just get something.

It is by no means a stress free, happy go lucky life on sw.

It could be anyone of you signing on in the coming weeks, one never knows what it around the corner.

Was happily employed for the last 20 years myself up until two weeks ago.

    Think before the sweeping statements.

you are absolutely correct...my friend came back from a visit and told me that in Bunoes Aires the litter bins in public places are empty.Nothing stays long in them.......They think they are poor here.Telly feeds them that idea...

While we can all agree that there is no absolute poverty in Ireland, we do have many people who can't afford to heat their homes, feed themselves properly or have any sort of quality of life.

Everything is relative, comparing us to 2nd or 3rd world countries isn't really fair.

The real poor don't have computers & internet at their disposal, so they don't have a voice here in this thread. Don't be surprised then if nobody comes on here giving a truly graphic description of their lives in poverty, and certainly don't draw the conclusion that there are no poor because this thread didn't find them.

    Be at peace,

Same idiotic reasoning presents in every one of these threads unfortunately - I cant understand. Either through bigotry or ignorance, people seem incapable of distinguishing between the long term unemployed (i.e. the 4.2% of the 'full employment' years) and the recent jobless (now the majority unemployed), some with decades of experience and unbroken empolyment histories

I've been lucky enough to avoid the dole so far. After seeing my partner deal with them for the past year I hope I never have to, it is miserable
