If your really heavy (25 stone>) should you diet and lose a few stone first before going to the gym? or is it time to skip the gym and the diet and take more drastic action (Gastric Bypass?)

    Any advice welcome

If this is your first step, fair play and best of luck. Have you tried your local Weightwatchers? Great place to start.

    It doesn't really matter.
But you will probably have to start with light exercise like walking or cycling.
And that is much more enjoyable done outside than in a gym.

Get help with your dieting and get moving. Gastric Bypass is an awful thing to consider.

    Yes first step...
Cant see myself going to weight watchers to be honest, counting points and group weight loss scenarios do not really appeal.
Knees and back are bad so walking a short distance can be painful. Cycling maybe ok though have not cycled in years....

Exercise wise try swimming if you have bad knees. Diet wise just try some healthy substitutions for what you normally eat, nothing too drastic for now. Those two alone will really kick start your weight loss.

I don't think it's ever time for a Gastric Bypass unless there's some other very serious health issues going on, but that's just my opinion.

As for where to start here's a great place. You can have a read of the stickies; you can post up daily diet, there's people here that really know their nutrition don't be worried about it you can learn alot from doing it; read other threads in here, you can learn alot from them.

As for gym or not, even going for walks (not jogging, your knees will suffer) will help just moving around more. I know stephen fry he was over 21stone(lighter than you and he's quite tall but just using him as an example) he started going for walks while listening to his ipod(not music, books) he'd just walk around london while someone read to him, as a result of him walking he started eating better and he did lose weight. I don't think you really need to worry too much about what to do now and just do something. (there's people that know more than me on here so pay attention to them, they become obvious when you read more threads)

    From yesterdays Mirror

I have come down from 20.5 stone to 17.9 by going to the gym and cutting out the rubbish food.Start easy eat carefully and do more as you can.

    Good Luck

What height are you OP? I was over 24 stone when I finally started to do something about it. I started with sensible changes to my diet, and joined the gym where I'm doing treadmill, stationary bike and weight machines. Have lost just under a stone in about a month.

Fair play for taking the first step... I know it's hard!

Ha ha, nice one! I'm off them 12 months last June after 19 years smoking. You can definitely do this too!

Commit yourself to the gym that way you are more likely to lose the weight

Never too late man, if you are really determined there is no reason why you cant turn it around. It will take a massive amount of effort and there is no quick fix.

The majority of work will be your diet alone, at your current weight you could make a huge amount of progress without even getting off the couch. Read the stickies on diet and nutrition and if you take the advice you are 75% there.
You will need to change your current mindset/mentality with regards to food though.

Personally i've gone from dragging my fat ass out of bed to now waking up and bouncing out before the alarm goes off.

Good luck and sort your diet out before you even consider a training plan.
