Just a quick question for all the guys and girls out there. I use smilies in e mails, instant messages and on Internet forums, but for some reasons never in text messages. I dont know why this is it just feels wrong for a guy to do in texts. So if your a guy do you use smilies in txts or am I just being odd?:D

From what I can tell, guys don't tend to use smilies as much as women when posting

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,528 ✭✭✭foxyboxer

It's quite awkward to actually put a smilie in a text (search for symbols > input ':' > search fro symbols > input '-' > search for symbols ')' > input). So if someone does include one then I appreciate that they went to the effort and must secretly want to ride me.

It's very important that you never ever engage in any social convention that makes you stand out amongst your mates. In this case, just analyze their texts and mimic their behaviour to the tee to avoid being ostracized. Like when monkeys all scratch their arses at the same time.

That might (and I stress, MIGHT) have been funny if I'd managed to quote the right post.

    Jesus, I'm drunk.

    Sorry Foxy.

In my opinion, guys sending them to girls is fine.

Guys sending them to guys is most certainly not.

Not homophobic or anything, just don't think it's cool

I always use them, without them, banter in Txts is nearly always misunderstood and leads to grief.

They're great! How else can you call someone a complete and utter k**t and then throw a smiley face in and they'll be none the wiser!

Rarely ever use smilies online never mind in any other medium. All my texts are long and formal I even spell out "you".

I use them when texting girls.

Though I have mates who can't even bring themselves to put question marks at the end of questions as it's somehow unmanly to do so.

I avoid them as much as possible. I figure people who know me should know when I'm being nice, angry or sarcastic, and I think anyone who sends emoticons to someone they don't know is ****ing crazy.

Would have to agree, lads sending smiley texts to eachother is a bit gay

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,030 ✭✭✭✭Chuck Stone

I use them to confuse people. Like this.

Oh man I'm feeling really down today, like everything is wrong. :D

Just back from town, some buzz. :'''(

I heard your father is very ill in hospital.

I can't wait to see you when you get back.

    Etc.

Are you using a late 90's Nokia?

I probably overuse them in text messages myself, but I'm allowed because I have a uterus ;). I just find it helps to define the tone of a message.

There is something slightly off about guys texting smilies to other guys. Sounds stupid, is stupid but it still feels some how wrong.

It's not like you're sucking their dick... Then again, if you send a kissy face then you probably are.

@efb - you know you're posting squares right?

I never sent a smiley in a text. Then I met herself, and now I do :P

But only to her, not to anyone else of course...

Thats the thing. Its totally irrational but I just dont do it and havent received any either. With girls I have sent smilies a handful of times, to set the tone as someone else said. :D

I use them in texts to girls (That I want to fu...) if they initiate the use of them, otherwise I never use them in any electronic medium.

That is only the case if you have a phone that was made in the stone age. All modern phones now have a 'insert smiley' option or something similar.
