I'm voting McGuinness, but I think Michael D. came off the best tonight.
Miriam O'Callaghan was ****e. "Hands up if you think...". Where does she think she is?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,078 ✭✭✭✭LordSutch

    1 > Michael D Higgins.
    2 > Sean Gallagher.
    3 > David Norris.

I guess Michael D is now a dead cert, but who will be runner up?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,148 ✭✭✭✭KnifeWRENCH

Higgins won the debate but I think McGuinness did well to hold his own under the barrage from Miriam. Norris also did better than he has in previous debates.

Biggest losers tonight were Gallagher and Dana.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,163 ✭✭✭✭Liam Byrne

No change for me. Michael D is still the best by far of a poor field, with some absolute undesirables not even fit to get a 4th or 5th preference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,934 ✭✭✭RichardAnd

Michael D for me. I only caught bits of the broadcast as I'd things to do but I agree with the above, Miriam was poor. I honesty will never grasp what people see in her, she's a real product of the closed shop of RTE.

Don't do that on polling day!

That's a shame it looks like Michael D is going to pull it off! The man is an old bag of bones! Im giving my vote to Gallagher! As they said for the last 12 months the normal duties of Mary Mac have shifted toward promoting irish exports! Realistically its the only way to go! They all talk about supporting this / that! We need the cash to do anything positive!

He's the man for that job! Its a shame he doesnt have more character / stage presence!

I didn't think there was an outright winner last night. Suppose most of them are playing it safe at this stage. Gallagher didn't do himself any good with the FF thing. Jesus there is nothing wrong with saying he was a member, loads of people supported FF for years. Dana had a horror show. Mary for me Davis is boring, Martin seemed to defend himself well, thought Miriam gave it to the others to attack him and nobody did, apart from a few sly quips from Mitchell. Norris was decent:eek: never thought I'd say that and, Micheal D was himself, at least he knows what hes talking about regarding the law and Constitution.

    1. Martin, undecided on the rest as of yet, hope it hots up during the week.

I would say the main reason for this would be Gay Mitchell's tactic of continually attacking McGuinness backfiring on him spectacularly. Now he is languishing in the polls and the rest of them can see the results of attacking a candidate with an obviously dodgy past.

I thought McGuinness held his own quite well under intense and somtimes utterly stupid questioning from Miriam, Michael D. was his usual self and is rightly the bookies favourite. Gallagher wasnt as smooth and together as he usual is and id say he will suffer because of this.

    Prediction:
    1) Michael D
    2) McGuinness
    3) Gallagher

Looking at the (totally unscientific, of course) current state of play in our poll, you can see how clever it was of Michael D to ensure Norris got a run-out. Norris's 2nd prefs will see Higgins safely home.

    Michael D Higgins by a mile . . . . .

A disgusting display by Miriam, I think she is a puppet to be honest.

    MMG gets my vote.

So even though you know his past, you are prepared to vote in Martin McGuinness (formerly of the Provisional IRA) as the President if Ireland

Yes I would, and so would 33 people of the above poll. Would he be the first ex IRA President?

I will vote Martin McGuinness, a man responsible(with a number of others) for winning civil rights for ALL people in the North, an experienced politician responsible for many economic improvements in the North, with the right political connections in America and elsewhere. He is a competent and astute politician.

Therefore, in my opinion, he is the best man for the job.

You set up the poll.. are you going to argue with anyone who votes for the candidates you don't deem to be fit for office? Why did you even include McGuinness as an option if that's the case?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 857 ✭✭✭FetchTheGin

It's also amazing that in almost ALL the polls I've seen on boards, MMG has came 2nd only to Higgins, which is pretty amazing, since the people that are shouting loudest, are his detractors.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,207 ✭✭✭meditraitor

McGuinnes is a bore, if I have to listen to

" myself, ian paisley and peter robinson"
" the people on the street dont care"

    echo, echo.......

Even if he was never in the RA he would still be a bad candidate, He knows nothing about the south and how we feel, he should stick to norn irn politics.

Who are you voting for then?

For the first time in my grown up life I will not be voting, the candidates are an embarresment.......

Even the referendum are a joke, slipping them in under a pile of presidential poo so they are not examined close enough by the public,

Unlike MMG I have been an active citizen of the Republic of Ireland all my life, MMG has been dropped in from the UK because SF believe they have enough fanboys to pull this of.... but what they dont realise is that young , full of piss and vineger men dont vote! he will be lucky to get 15%.

Even if the whole field is an embarrassment, you should still be able to vote by putting the most objectionable last.

Well, yes, that's the system. Always vote for everyone on the ticket to get the most from your vote.

Your right of course but I really dont see the point in voting for the candidates on show, I will probably reconsider the referendum vote as I feel this is important (that I vote with consideration) .

The poll would suggest he has a higher percentage of supporters on boards.ie than in reality.

Just back from working abroad and caught the debate last night, watching from abroad I caught some of headlines to date, Norris out, then back in, Dana the cry baby back but maybe gone again, the Seiner's poster boy joining the race, Sean Gallagher (WTF), Mary Who, Fianna Fails silliness, Gay Mitchell, back home for another lash and Micheal D deciding he must contribute more sincerity on the nation, MOG, from a far this entire debacle seemed surreal, could this really be an Irish Presidency Election?, now I am home and saw the nonsense last night, I have discovered its all true and yet strangely surreal. Bizarre stuff and one wonders why bother. Miriam was however her usual vigorous and enjoyable self, albeit, looking as bewildered as I.

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

So boards.ie posters aren't entitled to vote?

You only have to look at the dozen MMG threads on boards to see that his detractors are loudest.

The Sinn Fein/ McGuinness/ IRA voices certainly seem to be the loudest on Boards.ie, just look in the Politics forum, or this Election forum & the place is littered with Pro-McGuinness guff, (some of the propaganda thinly disguised as anti-McGuinness), just so another McGuinness thread can be started. The Boards.ie polls are also totally of the wall, with McGuinness either winning the polls, or coming 2nd in most

Reality is a different place, thank God.

A pity in a way that the campaign didn't go on until Halloween and then the candidates could've come on the telly for one last debate dressed in their favourite costumes.

Hmmm, I wonder who would dress up as what - any suggestions ? ;)

No need to mate, just click on Elections, and have a look at how many McGuinness threads are running at any one time!

The same thing happened during the General Election, with Pro-Sinn Fein threads popping up all over the place at a rate of ten to one (vis a vis) all the other Political parties put together, and then SF end up with 10% of the vote.

    Makes ya wonder ;)

Lord Sutch you really are boring with your constant snipes at McGuinness we get it you hate the man. He deserved a chance to speak last night though.

It's funny really certain sections of society upper classes cant deal with the thought of him as president. Ironically the sheer volume of abuse he has taken is making him more popular.

Constant snipes, that's ironic. Yes I hate everything he stands for, and Yes I hate the way many innocents convienently "forget" about the past atrocities of the Provo's. Yes I will be bloody glad when he doesnt make the grade and is sent packing, back to his own wee region of the UK.

Do you really think you are convincing anyone?

Every silly post you make turns more people towards McGuinness. You seem obsessed with the man even in threads nothing to do with him.

You want to constantly remind everyone about his past in every single post because you are afraid of that small chance he get elected.

I'm voting for him as are many others, deal with it. Your posts make me more sure of voting for him. I would love to see your face if he was announced as President, what a picture it would be....:D

So your openly stating you wont accept the democratically voted president if it doesnt suit you.

Is it North Korea? Again the anti McGuinness extremists on here really come out in so many posts dictators telling everyone else what to do and what will be accepted .
