Does phone have to do a backup on every attempt to install ios5?

If you are having problems try turning your phone off and on again. This allowed me to get as far as bricking my phone. After a few more tries I could finally restore and I'm up and running now.

Id say apples servers are just creaking under load. Probably be easier in the morning once the yanks go to bed.

Yes, It completely wipes the phone you then need to install the backup again.

Wait for what exactly? It has being doing this way past 20 mins now, I have gotten it into recovery mode a few times but keep getting the same error when I try to restore. I have tried to restore to 5.0 and 4.3.5, same thing.

If your music is on itunes it will be in icloud for download.

Just now, after almost 6 hours. According to a folder of updater logs, after 29 attempts. LOL. This is further swaying me to get an android next time

Had problems downloading the update then when it finally downloaded I'm having problems now immediately after the Backup process. I'm getting "The iPhone "iPhone" cannot be restored. An internal error occurred" error.
Very annoying! Think I'll give up tonight and try tomorrow evening :mad:

I'm getting an error 43 during the backup. If I continue it'll wipe the phone.
Since I backed up earlier, can I just continue and then restore that backup and have all my data/apps on ios5?

took me 4 hours to download:mad: but worked. Then i got a error code 3200 but tried to install and it worked

bricked after a few attempts , but did factory restore and then once io5 is one it rebuilt from the backup ,

forgot to take off passlock before which is always recommended

update to latest itunes first , then do a normal sync and backup

download ios5

restart iphone first , then attempt the upgrade

Same here, Well5 hours, 8pm to 1 in the morning.. Real pain.

But seems ok iphone 3Gs , Ios5 no real upgrade to it and ipad2.

Painful upgrade. only thing is that it makes my iphone faster, which I am glad.

Not worth the effort IMO. My iPhone is a sole Apple product in a PC environment ~ no benefit whatsoever.

Actually, the transfer of photos does work to a PC. Unlike Apple's instructions, one does not need iPhoto or Aperture or iStream ~ so it was confusing for a while and I stumbled across it while trying to delete the cloud.

Glad I waited until today to do mine, absolutely perfect upgrade. All apps, music videos are everything is as it was (apart from jailbreak, obviously) expect it's iOS5.

Yeah, just a small error because I had a entry in hosts to apple.com.
Once I removed that and restarted itunes it all worked fine.

i had a load of errors....but it did work first go, albeit slow and with errors.

errors like telling me to transfer apps or i would lose them and then not going any further....also music missing off the phone, but could see it in itunes (from phone) even though the new music app said there was none there...i deleted a song and added a song itunes to it and still no good....then lastly i edited the name of a song on the phone and something happed "updating settings" or something like that and then all the music suddenly appeared on the phone again.

funny thing with the apps....not ONE app outside of the stock apple apps would work...none....so i thought i'll have to updated them all over time to work with ios.....anyway, bbc app had an update so i updated it and magically all the apps worked again after i updated it...go figure

it was a long old slog till 1am.

A happy customer here on 3Gs. It all seems a little zippier and enough new goodies to keep it fresh (Notification Centre; Simple Photo Editing in the Camera Roll; Reminders App; Mail updates - font formatting; Safari tweaks - private browsing, speed increase; Custom SMS Tones; Wireless Syncing; improved camera App, getting straight to the camera from Lock Screen, hardware camera button; iTunes in the cloud).

It's good that they are still selling the 3Gs, because that helped keep the performance up on the handset and will probably do so for at least another year.


That said, I'm not too sold on all the iCloud features yet, but iTunes in the cloud is good for picking back up some old songs that you might have deleted. iTunes Match could be useful later (if we ever get it) for getting a better quality version of older ripped songs ... but I can't see myself paying for that for more than a year (I mean once I have gotten the better quality version of the song, why would I need to keep subscribing?)

I kept getting as far as backing up but the bar took about an hour to fill 1 cm. tried about 20 times over 2 days and nothing....
So I restored it and it updates automatically. Bajingo!
Took about 2 hours but depends on how much media u have stored on it.
Don't forget to do a normal backup first tho!

Folders came to iPad the same time they came to iPhone. iOS 4.0

i find them a tad slow to open up. not insanely slow just there's like a 10ms delay from the tap to the actual open. it's enough to peeve me a little bit.
