Ken Burley, must be Kate Burley's illegitimate idiot son.

To be honest that was rather sad, not at all funny. Embarrassing really...

Some great lines from Ken. Would have loved to hear his reaction if we won.

    twas a bit of humour,

    No, it wasn't.

It sounded like he goolged "witty literary quotes" and then tried to squeeze as many of them into one radio interview as possible in an attempt to pass himself off as clever and/or original. Two things he most certainly is not.

but the joke is on the welsh ( at the time) he is using a fake name (albeit quite close to his own) and he is a football correspondant.at first they thought he was serious.

he also went on a diatribe last week calling perugini and castrogiovani a bunch of nobodies and that mallet was talking out of his hat.my sense of humour must be different

to be fair he has a turn of phrase every night on that show, and it cant all be rehearsed. 3 hours a night 4 days a week.he seems reasonably erudite.

You must never listen to off the ball. It's not far off the way he always talks. But it was obviously tongue in cheek.

exactly he comes accross as very intelligent albeit a bit of a shock jock. a far cry from the way that poster describes him.i follow him on twitter too and he sems to be witty/well read and topical.however much credence you give to twitter is another argument

If copying and pasting is all that is required to pass oneself off as erudite then I have nothing to declare but MY genius.

He is the football correspondent and the football show is only one hour of the show and even that is taken up with a lot of interviews. Ken's news round up is about 10 mins after the 9 O'Clock news.

So you can forget your 12 hours a week its actually probably not even an hour.

Ken falls into the trap with the rest of the OTB crew. Which is thinking if a joke is mildly amusing the first time round just think how it will be if it's made 10 times a night, every night for the next 6 months...

he is intermittently on the show most of the night and sometimes presents it on his todd. he had a funny to and fro with kenny cunningham at the arsenal spurs game last weekend.how does he copy and paste on a live show? he might have a couple of gags in the can but in a live environment with changing scores and incident he is surely ad libbing a lot of the time. i dont understand the vitriol to something so lighthearted?

but what is the inference between him and her? does she have a journalistic style like himself? his name is ken early ,a failed footballer who had trials with marseilles alledgedly. he is just a man doing a job- that they won an award for the show this week(again).

for someone so disenfranchised with their work you seem to know exactly the make up of the soccer show/when he comes on and how many hours a week he puts in.
    i dont get it?

His entire show is plagiarized from football fan websites. He takes days old stories and tries to pass them off as breaking news.

Vitriol, no, just calling it as I see it. Once he tried (and failed miserably) to make himself sound frightfully witty and ever so well informed by explaining the downturn in Liverpool's form under Rafa Benitez by saying it was similar to the theory in Schrödinger's cat, I think it's very safe and more than fair to say Ken is on the air because he loves the sound of his own voice more than anything else.

its a great show but ken waffles on a huge amount, and it takes away from the show big time , sounds like he has been on a weekender alot of the time.

...a lot of people likes what he does. OTB is the most listened to radio show at that time of day and Ken's Football show is one of the most downloaded podcasts in the country. I don't think he has to try too "hard to make himself sound frightfully witty and ever so well informed" because he is just that - witty and well informed. You don't think so, fair enough - each to his own.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,592 ✭✭✭GerM

Jesus, Profiler, lighten up. It's completely tongue in cheek and is quite funny. I'm not a massive fan of his work on OTB but he was very good there. In relation to taking stuff from football websites, I would be delighted if any of the rugby pundits bothered to do so much research into their appearances. Early might not be to everyone's taste but he's encyclopaedic when it comes to his sport and extremely well informed. You seem to have a major chip on your shoulder in relation to him for nothing essentially.

    Glad you enjoyed if, Noffles.

On listening, it's a nice bit of satire lampooning Ireland's efforts so hopefully no Welsh were offended in the making of this interview. The part about manfully running straight and the gentlemanly conduct of refusing to kick for the posts as opposed to the underhanded Welsh tactics of passing the ball and taking points is excellent.

Just had another listen to the 2nd one, it's brilliant, the "stench of want"...

Will forward on, best to have heard one after the other.

"O gara taking the Corinthian approach while priestland takes pot shots from everywhere like a guttersnipe " I find it hard to understand why anyone doesn't find that humorous.

My favourite was rugby being a jousting without armour and Wales turned it into a knife fight

Underhand tactics Shifting the ball around like a game of 3 card monty on a street corner .

What's funnier is people texted in , unimpressed , they thought he was serious

Ah come on! The first half of his show is football news. Of course it's going to be reported on other sites. You really expect him to fill an hour a day with exclusive football stories?
Plenty of good interviews in the second half of the show too. Off the Ball just won PPI sports program of the year award, they must be doing something right. Great rugby coverage too.

Best sports show in Irish media.
Earley may be a bit self righteous, but he's a great speaker.
McDevitt is a brilliant presenter, and they've rugby analysts like Wood, Horgan, Byrne and Williams who can actually analyse, as well as the one and only Johnny Giles for footie.

Deserve the credit that they're getting.

He did a similiar interview with NZ radio before about the BOD spear tackle, they played some of it on fridays show, probably available online.

Overall i think OTB do a great job of mixing humour and decent sports analysis, one recent highlight for me was the night Bernard Jackman was the mystery voice in the competition and the clue was " its bernard jackman", cue someone texting in Eamon Coughlin and being rightly named and shamed (pretty sure it was jackman, whatever explayer it was, they played a clip with "its X)

That is brilliant! It's just like the Australian reaction to us beating them only he's clearly ripping the p***.

I've often had mates in the car with no interest in sport busting themselves laughing listening to OTB. Great show.

well if ken early isnt clever , hes a bloody good actor , his interviews are always full of witty and acute observations , smug he is but not stupid , always enjoy listening to the football show , complete with backround jazz score :)

What's the deal with that muzak? What purpose does it serve?

I listen to the football show on podcast and the background music bugs me tbh.

OTB's a hugely entertaining show, one need only listen to Des Cahill for 2 mins if you need that fact confirmed.

You appear not to have a very good sense of humour. I dont know why you take him so seriously - neither he, nor his colleagues, do so. Why dont you just sit back and enjoy it for what it is, it is a light hearted sports radio show with no pretention to be highbrow. Ken throws in a bit of his nonsense now and then, often the references are spurious/inappropriate/irrelevant/make no sense, but that's the point.
