I'm looking to get a few sets of chains for the purposes of lifting heavy things (5-30kg, whatever) but obviously I don't fancy paying retail prices for them.... so does anyone know of anyone/anywhere that might have lengths of old chain of any description lying around? I've emailed a few boatyards etc but haven't had much luck.

You could ask whoever used to make the Cher and Meatloaf videos?

Thanks for that, I got in touch and was disappointed to hear they recycled it all through the 'Northside Elegánce' jewellery range in Argos

Hmmm yes I have some of that.

Have you tried hanging around the docks at night asking any sailors of they'd like to give you a length? It could work.

Woodies, Lenihans (capel street), Goslins, motorbike shops.

If they don't have them, they'll be able to tell you where to look.

That a really good idea, instead of getting raped paying for chain at retail prices from shops, I can get raped down the docks for free. You should start a thread about money saving training alternatives

They dont have any old stuff lying around. I was mostly hoping that out there somewhere somebody might know of a load of chain sitting there collecting rust/in a skip etc. My budget is zero euro :)

Local recycling centre might let you have some if it's there.

Apparently the price of scrap metal has risen significantly of late.

Did you try some of the marine supplies shops, www.unionchandlery.ie or www.chmarine.com

If buying chain - buy enough length for both squat and bench.

You could always double it up on the bench for example.

I had chains - a great pair - no idea where they disappeared to. I might have left them in the Hercs when I was training there but really don't know.

Biggest issue with chains and stuff was drawing straws for who got to carry the acessory bag into the gym!:D

We have a _JOE_ for all the trivial crap like doing wraps, carrying plates/chains, making tea etc. :pac:

They were yours? Thank you sir - I used them extensively.

Think they disappeared when Hercs was done up, may be wrong tho.

True, steel has gone up a good bit in the last few years.

Unlikely due to the price, we get lads in hi-aces out the back of my work asking for scrap all the time. They are out scouring skips.

I would try the scrap yards though, just ring around, golden pages is the best bet, I expect many have no websites.

If you set them up right you shouldn't need different length chains for both.
Use the same heavy training chain, but just set the support chain to the different lengths so the heavy chain deloads fully.
This also means that you won't have as much heavy chain off the ground at the bottom (this adds nothing when you think about it), which means the whole chain set up is lighter - easier to bring to and from he gym.

Be careful when buying the chain from a marine chandler, the galvanizing dip process is normally very crude and leaves the chain harsh. And stainless steal chain is very expensive.

Scrap yards are probably your best bet for goodly sized used chain.

Most of the places who use this sort of stuff professionally (crane/lifting companies, boatyards/marinas, etc) only dispose of chain when it's either damaged or gone out of certification. In neither case are they supposed to let it out into the possession of the general public, as their insurance providers and/or the Health & Safety people would rip them to shreds if anything was ever to go wrong with it.
Their chains go for destruction, and nowhere else. In principle. :D

Probably - IIRC they were 5/8 inch. Just did a check

'So I set about buying a set of chains - if you look to buy them yourself you'll soon realise that not many people stock chains of this size. I bought two 5ft lengths of galvanised 5/8 inch link chain, plus some smaller chain and some nuts'n'bolts and the lot cost me just £30-00. Each 5ft length of chain weighs about 22-25lbs. See the pictures below.'

Does this sound like them? If so it solves the gap in my memory as to where did they go!:D

I might actually buy some more chains but this time will get a carry on trolley for transporting them!

The very same!! The longer, lighter link chain was an awesome shout. So many people set them up wrong and don't get the benefits as a rsult!

That's the kinda of set up I was talking about above. The smaller chain to adjust.

Pretty much exactly what EliteFTS sell, for $105 a pair
