It's been fifty years since we won an All Ireland in Mayo and tbh, we're getting a bit impatient. The talk now is that we're going to start importing young rangy Africans, teach them how to field a ball, fatten them up a bit and then sit back and watch the medals roll in

They'd win all the penalty kick shootouts anyway.

Germans do, do comedy, comedy shows enjoy big ratings in Germany.

There is a strange deference to order and authority to them, so they would make the perfect Rugger team. But I was always curious as to why the USA never "really" took to it. It's the perfect team game, all components must work, it just seems their type of game.

More about the German deference to order and authority. I was watching "Seconds from disaster" about the Munich high speed rail crash were 101 people died.

A metal casing about 3 foot long and 6 inches wide flew off the wheel and though a seat just missing a man. He then got up to report the incident to the conductor who was further up in the train, then the conductor had to inspect the incident before he would stop the train, so while walking back the train derailed. I thought this was bizarre.

If that was Ireland we would clambering over each other to hit the communication cord to stop the train.

If the USofA got into Rugby in a big way it'd be interesting. Imagine being able to pick a national team from all those American football players.

I doubt it. Most of American footballers aren't even required to carry the ball, never mind master the nuances of the scrum and lineout, even the kicker does nothing but kick. The tackling is totally different too

The only positions that could be related to rugby are running backs who are a bit like centres

Rugby isn't a very logical sport with the scrums, resets, kicking the ball out to keep possession and the breakdowns and rucks and mauls etc. Trying to break the rules and get away with it wouldnt go down well either, hence the best exponents of that style of play - McCaw, Pocock, Burger et al would be lynched in Berlin...

Rugby league is much more suited to them, run as fast and as far up the pitch then tackle and repeat.

South Africa is mostly made up of Afrikaners who are all Dutch descent who are close to Germans racially... lot of racism here.

But they lost yesterday even though they're better athletes than the Aussies IMO. Look at Pierre Spies, beast of a man but didn't play great yesterday. Timed at 10.7 seconds over 100m, 6 ft 4 in and 17 stone.

Come on have you watched American football, most action last for 5 seconds then stop for a huddle then stop for an ad break then play again for 5 seconds.

Namibia in fact have a huge German lineage.

OT why are the South Africa / Namibia teams generally all-white? Is it an upper-class / private-school sport over there too?

It'ld be a nightmare for commentators. Trying to avoid comments like "the German attack is cutting through the Russian defence", "the German winger puts his foot on the gas and leaves the Romanians for dead" etc.

And the German centre offloads to the Romanian winger Bachan who qualifies through a German grandmother.......after ten minutes of being camped on the Russian line the Romanian and German hybrid team are forced back into their own half

Rugby in SA was a symbol of the Afrikaner physical superiority. Good Time article here about it: http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1659593,00.html

And that problem somehow disappears in soccer?

I know you were joking...but you know be logical!

Anyway, it is blatantly obvious that if a country like Germany took rugby seriously that they would be one of the top teams in the world. Pretty much like in any other sport that they take seriously (or any other country of a similar size).

Anyway I just checked the calendar, because for a minute there I thought I was back in 1930's Germany.

Rugby was relatively popular in Germany before WW2. In fact they even recorded victories over France. The Nazis discouraged it however as they saw it as being too "English". It never recovered its popularity after the war.

Funny that they kept playing football. That's a pretty English sport too.

Two drastically different kinds of sports with dramatically different requirements with regards to strength and conditioning.

Make a Rugby Team from the top NFL players and they'd get mashed by a rugby team.

Rugby league is for the poor steel workers of the north of engerland and their descendants in oz. Union is much more popular.

I imagine he means if you took those same guys as teenagers and taught them how to play rugby. The same way that if we had only one major sport (say soccer) we would do better if all of our runners, GAA players, rugby players etc focused on just soccer from 10 onwards. Given the USA has an enormous number of large, athletic people, his post is true enough.

If the same percentage of American footballers took up rugby in High School (and they received sufficient training), they would dominate the sport.

    Which is pretty obvious.

In Ireland. There is not a massive difference in popularity in England and League is actually more popular in Australia.

There are very few countries in the world where Rugby is played in any kind of serious way/by any significant number of people.
And even of the teams in the World-cup, Rugby isn't the biggest sport in the majority of them and isn't even the second biggest sport in many.
So you could insert the name of practically any country in the world for Germany and ponder on this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,132 ✭✭✭Killer Pigeon

There are far to many people of German descent in America. That's way, in American football, they have to wear so much protection.

(ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha)

Oh absolutely. The Americans tend to pump enormous cash into sports programs in schools and colleges.

Seeing as he was talking about picking American Football players though i just kind of assumed he meant a straight transfer from one sport to the other.
