DCU wireless internet

Is it just me or is the DCU wireless Internet massively sh!te this year?

Having to download, install and log into the "DCU Eduroam" tool is fair enough, but once you have done so it is incredibly slow.

It seems to me it is much slower than it was last year.

I'm in the library, I have full signal and I just did a speedtest...

Is it that bad for everyone or is there something wrong with my setup on the laptop? Am I doing something wrong? The wireless internet was really fast for me last year in the library and around campus.

What SSID are you using? I've had no problems with LapLan or LapLanNG when I've been in there every other week for meetings :/

Is your laptop wireless n enabled? I am getting very quick internet using eduroam on the mac.

Its not just you. My phone won't connect to Laplan after about 2 o'clock and before that its very patchy and slow.

Everybody I've talked to has noticed a serious decline in quality.

I'm not sure why people are using eduroam on-campus. Eduroam is for visiting students (and for DCU students visiting other campuses where they also use eduroam).

I thought you had to use it? Every network I try to connect to redirects me to a page telling me to download it.

Why does the wireless that says "TryMeFirst@DCU" redirect you to a page about installing it?

If you aren't meant to use it first then why did they call it that?

No idea why it would direct you like that. The networks for on-campus use by DCU staff/students are LapLanNG and anything else beginning in LapLan...

FYI - LapLan is been phased out in favour of eduroam kinda like out sourcing for ISS. This was communicated to postgrads at orientation the informaion is also on the ISS webpage.

The only thing I can say in response to this is: Why?

The other phrase "Don't fix what's not broken" also comes to mind...

Would say it's cost reduction as Heanet manage the eduroam network infrastructure, I'm not sure why though it's just what we have been told in orientation.

Was talking to one of the library CSD guys who said "they've had some blackspots on the first floor", i then explained how the only place I could pick up reception was under the routers and he basically said that's just the way it is... it means meeting rooms are near impossible to use with laptops...

Anyone else having better luck? I've just stopped bringing in the laptop

    It is an absolute joke.

Week 4 now and still no better, even seems to be worse.
Couldn't get connected for ages yesterday in Business Building and when I did the speeds were similar to WAP on an old phone. Shocking.

Then go to the library, get set up at a desk to do an assignment and no connection. Try the wonderful ISS advice of restarting laptop to no avail. Go down to help desk "oh try again in 15 mins". I complain about it being like this for a month now and all I get was "We have to update our infrastructure". No **** sherlock.

Personally I don't mind that they are upgrading the wireless network.

The main problem is they retired LapLan3.0 and LapLanXL before ensuring LapLanNG and eduroam actually work properly.

The wireless in the computing building is absolutely horrible this year and unlike in the past where the the wireless network could be managed by the schools technicians it is up to ISS & HEAnet to fix the problem.

Hopefully won't take long to fix it but honestly don't hold out hope.

Netbook with wireless g card - internet is rubbish.

MacBook with wirelss n card - internet is great.

HEAnet wont be managing the wireless on campus. thats entirely the ISSs responsibility.

HEAnet are responsible for the underlying backbone of eduroam in the entire country it is ISS responsibility to facilitate support of the system. The very nature of eduroam requires the involvement of eduroam as they connect the colleges together ie. somebody from TCD is able to logon as their authentication details are passed back through the infrastructure to their home college.

eduroam is not a system invented by ISS.

HEAnet provide internet too all the colleges in ireland too, but they are NOT responsible for on-site maintenance. ISS are responsible wholly for the state of the wireless networks they provide. HEAnet simply provide a mechanism for eduroam login credentials to be shared by many sites, they don't do the infrastructure in DCU, that's ISS's role.

What are ye on about? - I've been on campus every day since mid sept, running 10.7.2 on macbook pro in library, restaurant, henry grattan. No issues whatsoever - in fact it's better than it's ever been.

I e-mailed ISS to complain about it, meeting them on Wednesday to discuss it.
Don't believe in ranting on here and doing nothing about it so thought I would try and get something done about it.

Ah now, originally I thought it might have been my laptop or me doing something stupid so I wanted to know if anyone else had a problem, now that I know what the deal is I will take it further.

Will you tell us what they say on Wednesday?

Think you picked me up wrong. This wasn't a dig at anyone at all. Just following up on my post earlier in the thread where I ranted away about it.

    Will do.

    Hopefully it is sorted.

    Spoke with ISS there.
    Very helpful talk.

Mainly the problems are with 2.4Ghz cards, which my laptop has. Most Apple stuff has 5Ghz which is why they havent noticed any difference.

The problems in the library seem to be associated with the fact that there is interference amongst the various access points. That and the way the library is designed.

I urged that whatever changes that need to be made are to be made as soon as possible and put the mess behind us. It will take 18 hrs downtime apparently, most likely at a weekend.

Also mentioned that there is apparently a problem with printing jobs in the library where you get charged even if the printer doesn't actually work.

    Finally!!
    Dear Colleagues,
We have recently been investigating issues regarding access to our wireless networks (LaplanNG, Eduroam) on campus.
There have been connectivity issues experienced in busy areas such as the Library and across campus by some older devices.

After consultation and testing with our providers we plan to upgrade the wireless network infrastructure across campus.
This upgrade process will begin in the Library on Wednesday morning (November 9th) at 7am.
Wireless access in the Library will be unavailable until approximately 9am.
Please call to the ISS Service Desk on the Library ground floor if you still experience connectivity problems after Wednesday.

There will be further updates regarding the upgrade process across campus.
I apologise if this essential work will cause you any inconvenience.

    Kind Regards,
    Justin
