Specsavers wont give out pupil distance

I went into Vision Express on Henry st. in Dublin city center for an eye exam and to get my prescription.

After having the exam I received my prescription minus pupil distance. I asked for them to give it to me, and first they lied and told me they dont measure the pupil distance until you get fitted for glasses. I knew this was an outright lie and told them as much.
They then told me that they cannot give out my pupil distance for safety reasons. If I were to order glasses online and they were bad, they would be held responsible. I told them they are full of ****. They then stated no optician would give out your pupil distance.

In my opinion this is basically extortion. Its like if you went to a doctor and were told you need medication, but they will not give you the prescription and you can only buy the medication from them for 3 times the price other places sell it.

Im half a mind to report this behavior... only I have no idea how I would follow up on it.

EDIT: brain fart. i originally said specsavers but it was vision express i went to and had these issues.

I can understand your anger, but using bad language just undermines your argument. Don't bother cursing or making threats to them, it's intimidating and quite frankly annoying for them, and lets you down too.

When I was told the first lie, I was polite enough, but I stood my ground because I knew it was a lie.

When I was then told a second lie straight to my face, they no longer deserved my respect.

I never made any threats in the process, Im not sure where you picked that up from my original post?

This is likely true - at least it has been in my case. But it's not as if it's a big deal to measure it. Takes like 2 seconds and an experienced optometrist can guess within 2mm just by looking at you. I've never, ever had an issue with getting my PD. Except in Ireland of course.

VExpress are a bunch of chancers. I went in for contact lenses there and they said "We only accept VExpress prescriptions". That's got to be illegal (but probably not). I just laughed at them and took my money elsewhere.

You need to be ultra coy in this country. "I am going away to another country and I want an eye test before I leave" is the classic. That way you have the power of getting a position from them before they get cash. If they say "we provide full prescrip including PD etc" and then they don't, they're breaching standard sales legislation*.

    * Ha! Let's see you do anything about it in this country.

PD is not part of the prescription but part of the dispensing process. If you are not getting specs from them then they are not required to measure your PD. However most Optometrists do measure the PD as part of an accurate eye exam.
Your PD will be measured by whomever does your dispense and in the case where you are buying your glasses online there are usually directions for measuring your own PD. As Carveone said it's pretty simple to do but be aware that in the case of large prescriptions or sensitive people 1 or 2 mm out can cause a lot of problems.

The eye exam fee charged by most optometrists do not cover the cost of providing the service and so most depend on the sale of specs to compensate.
Have you ever wondered why it's cheaper to have your eye examination than having your hair cut?

I got my PD from specsavers with absolutely no hassle before. I did get glasses from them though.

I never had any bother getting a copy of my full prescription from my optician.. usually when I was going travelling and wanted it handy in case I broke my spec's.

You are entitled to a copy of any personal information which company holds on you under the Data Protection Acts. This will include the info you're looking for.

Measuring your pd is very simple to do. Easiest way hold a mm ruler against your nose and stand in front of a mirror not too close or too far away and take a photo of yourself. Open up the image and zoom in on your eyes and measure from the middle of one to the middle of the next eye. It's not required to be given out with your prescription when asked. Some places will reluctantly give you the pd when asked. Some just don't want to just to be awkward as they know you are probably going shopping elsewhere. Don't get stressed out about not getting your pd it's probably somewhere between 61 and 65 mm

In most eye exams PD measurement will be taken for the purpose of positioning the lenses centrally in front of the patient's eyes for the test. This may not be taken 100% accurately. When it comes to dispensing the glasses the PD will usually be retaken and often monocular PDs are taken to ensure the lenses in glasses are precisely positioned. Most opticians won't have a problem with giving you a PD measurement if asked at the time of testing (when they will ensure to take it very accurately) as opposed to afterwards. Say they have recorded a loosely accurate measurement, they give to you, you go off and buy glasses with it and the decentration causes you problems..where are you then?
Ask up front. As for the measuring in front of a mirror....you might as well take a running jump.

Not surprised specsavers wont give you your PD since you were tested in Vision Express. Surely this post should be amended at least or even removed.

oh right... so its ok to accuse someone of libel, which itself is slander when its not true.

at that point i had already corrected the post to the extent of my ability.

well in that case you appear to be slandering specsavers because the title of the thread is not true. have you PMd a moderator to ask them to change it?

anyway it doesn't call for the use of such aggressive and abusive language in your responses here. If that is how you addressed the assistant at Vision Express, it hardly helped your case much.

that is not how i addressed the person at vision express.

so lets recap what was said here:

poster tells me my post should be amended or deleted.

i reply saying my post had been amended.

poster replies simply saying i have committed libel and not offering anything new or constructive.

so yes, at that point i decided i would stoop his his level in my next reply.

and no, i would not be slandering specsavers because i corrected my mistatement. your belief that the title still being incorrect is tantamount to slander is mistaken. go look it up.

The title is still misleading. Specsavers have had no input into your grievance with Vision Express. You have edited you post as best you can. In the interest of fairness the moderator should amend the title or remove the post.

the thread title still incorrectly states Specsavers. I'm no barrister but I fail to see how it could be that I am apparently committing slander while you are not.

none of the other posters stopped to the level of using vulgar language or suggesting that objects should be removed from their anatomy.

glad to hear you didn't address the person in Vision Express in the same manner as you are addressing some of the posters here - although telling them that
    they are full of ****
is hardly the most polite way of addressing anybody.
