Intermission.. a 2003 irish film with Cillian Murphy and Colm Meaney. highly recommended.
also the miami vice movie 2007 i think it was... i know i know i'll probably be flamed.. but its better now at home than when it was released with the hype etc. its actually pretty good and true to form if you are a fan of the miami vice tv show

Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Guy Ritchie's best films. Both thoroughly enjoyable.

Un Prophete (2009) - Excellent french film set in prison, where a young Arab becomes embroiled in organised crime.

50 Dead Men Walking is another that I really enjoyed.

Here's one to avoid - Staten Island with Ethan Hawke.

It is terrible - starts out as a typical gangster film, then morphs
into a surreal Pulp-Fiction style mish-mash, with a Godfather figure
who won't come down out of a tree that is due to be cut down.

    A real stinker.

A friend recommended Lone Star, an indie film from the 1990s
    - anyone see this one?

One False move is another one worth getting.

To live and die in L.A. Not to be missed IMO.

Try The Square, Animal Kingdom,Red Hill ,all Australian films btw ,all good thrillers.
The Next 3 Days,Fair Game ,The Ghost Writer ,The Secret in their Eyes (subtitled),Edge of Darkness are all worth a watch .

Hollywood doesnt seem to be interested in making crime thrillers or even thrillers anymore .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 339 ✭✭RodVelvet

Cutter's Wayis well worth a watch. I've seen it described as a neo-noir thriller which I would agree with. It's certainly not a standard thriller. Only came across it lately and it definitely can be regarded as a lost classic.

+1 Animal Kingdom is excellent .

City of God is the best film i have seen in the last few months.

    Or Sin Nombre both excellent.

Both these are subtitled but if you dont like subtitled movies just give them a chance.

If you like TV series check out "Forbydelsen" danish crime drama. Gripping from start to finish.

Inside Man does the job for me every time.

Outstanding twists as well and I think there's a sequel coming out as well.

    Probably wont happen.
Im kind of glad as I thought the way Inside Man ended was great, not sure what else they could have done with it to be honest.

For a bit more light hearted crime fun the recently released Flypaper is surprisingly enjoyable. I expected absolutely nothing from it and was very pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was, some good laughs, a fun script and likeable characters. Nothing ground breaking but a fun way to spend a Saturday evening.

Didn't love the prophet If I'm being honest

I was dying to see it and expected a lot more but maybe It warrants a second viewing

    The Bone Collector

    Denzil Washington and Angelina Jolie
Got some awful reviews but I loved it, watched it three times now

    Darkblue., Kurt Russell film
The riots arising from the trial of the police officers and Rodney King is in the background and you get updates and news as the film goes on. Tension all over the city, it's realy well done
Eventually the verdict comes in and the city erupts.
That's the background in the film and the main story is good too

Layer Cake is worth a watch

Lots of good suggestions already. I will add a few.

Infernal Affairs 1 and 2 are brilliant. The departed is a remake of the first one, with some dabbling.

I liked London Boulevard, which is oddly not well known, considering it has Keira Knightley and Colin Farrell.

In Bruges is brilliant. Really is surprisingly good if you haven't seen it.

The Asphalt Jungle is very good. I dont usually have the attention span for films made before the 70's but I really enjoyed this. 50's film noir which was controversial at the time because it was probably the first film to show a realistic depiction of a bank heist.

Chinatown is fantastic, if you haven't seen it..another noir.

    Eastern Promises was brilliant too.

Body Double is worth seeing. The film De Palma made next after Scarface.

    The Bank Job

Not your typical Jason Statham film
A bit more serious and darker

And it's loosely based on a true story

Excellent film, if you don't like Jason Statham films and even if you, give this one a chance

On the Waterfront, about union corruption. Brando at his best
But the star of the show for me was the priest played by Karl Malden

Blow for me one of the best crime movies around with Johnny Depp putting in a great performance. All based on a true story which for me makes it that bit more interesting.

Casino: Set in vegas starring Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci need i say anymore?

Sleepers: An amazing film foe me with a great story that keepsyou gripped right till the end, with some great performances from Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro Brad Pitt just to name a few.

Lucky Number Slevin: A great crime film with plenty of twists and turns.

City of God: A Brazillian film so once you can handle subtitles take a look at this, its kind of shocking but is an eye opener into a part of the world we never really see much of with some great performance put in by the kids in the film.

Alpha Dog: A very good film which a lot of people got turnedof when they saw Justin Timberlake was in it, but hes actually very good in it.

True Romance: An incredible movie, Christian Slater at his finest, also keep an eye out for Christopher Walken not a major role in it but hes certainly memorable. Written by Tarantino so you know to expect violence.

This is one thread ill be keeping an eye on as i love crime films.

    .

Timberlake was the best thing about AD. He's a very good actor but the film as a whole wasn't great.
