atm: Group A: Belgium Group B: Ireland Group C: Estonia* Group D:Bosnia and Herzegovina Group F: Croatia Group G: Montenegro Group H: Portugal Group I: Czech Republic.

    * Estonia are 2nd in Group C but have played one game more than Serbia who are one point behind them

Sweden are 2nd in Group E but will qualify for the finals as best runners up if they defeat Netherlands on the final matchday

    Belgium or Turkey
    Armenia or Us
    Estonia or Serbia
    Bosnia or France
    Sweden
    Greece or Croatia
    Montenegro
    Denmark, Portugal or Norway
    Czech Republic or Scotland

One will go through as best second place team.

Any of those teams can finish second I think.

if we win on tuesday is there any chance we could go through as best second place team?

    Not a hope.

Goal difference already rules us out

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 8,632 ✭✭✭darkman2

Goal difference will probably mean no chance of top second team. Yeh see that's the flip side of Trappatoni's style of play of negativity and getting few goals.

Be fun if we ended up with France in a playoff.

Techincally, I believe so. But, it requires an awful lot in our favour so is right next door to impossible.

My mistake - we're actually ahead of Turkey and the Czechs seemingly! I was looking at the Euro 2012 Wiki page before.

    http://www.world-results.net/uefa/ranking.html#2011/url

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,276 ✭✭✭IRISHSPORTSGUY

    So to clarify:

    Portugal/Denmark
    Sweden
    Croatia
    Serbia (if they beat Slovenia)
    Ireland

These are teams ranked above us. BUT one of Portugal/Denmark, Sweden or Croatia will get best second place. It looks like we'll be seeded.

Bosnia (Estonia if Serbia don't beat Slovenia), Turkey/Belgium, Czech Republic/Scotland/ and Montenegro would be potential opponents.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,528 ✭✭✭✭dsmythy

France could make a balls and end up in the playoffs again which would dump us out of the seeded ratings.

Bosnia would be the worst draw
Turkey/Belgium would probably beat us too.
    Czechs would go either way.
We would beat Estonia or Montenegro over two legs.

    IMO.

Maybe we can be the 17th team

A draw with Armenia could make our seeding a bit precarious.

Basically, take these point totals: http://www.world-results.net/uefa/ranking.html#2011
(Ones that matter: Ireland 27799, Bosnia 27663, Czech 27124, Turkey 27006)

For a win, add 1600, 800 for a draw, or 0 for a loss (2000/1000/0 in the case of Czech).

For every goal in the margin of victory (i.e. if it's 3-1, that's 2) add 20 (25 in the case Czech).

Basically, if 2(1 if Serbia win) of the other 3 win, and Ireland draw and don't score about 35 goals, we won't be seeded. So we'd want to win to get one of Belgium/Turkey, Czech/Scotland, Montenegro, Bosnia(/Estonia if and only if Serbia don't win in Slovenia)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 833 ✭✭✭Ganymede Glow

I wouldnt like us to play Bosnia right now. Wouldnt be hugely terrified about drawing Belgium/Turkey/Estonia/Montengro etc. Suppose we have to get there first

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,280 ✭✭✭Bukman13

This is how the seeding for the playoffs pan out from an Irish perspective.

If Ireland win, we will be seeded if 1 of these 2 results happen.
      Bosnia draw/lose to France
      Serbia draw/lose to Slovenia

If Ireland draw, we will be seeded if 3 of these 4 results happen.
      Turkey draw/lose to Azerbiajan
      Serbia draw/lose to Slovenia
      Bosnia draw/lose to France
      Czech Rep draw/lose to Lithuania

    Well...

That is true, but if Turkey win by 53, or Czech Republic win by 42, we wouldn't be seeded unless both of those happen. If those 2 results come to pass, we won't be seeded, regardless.

Unlikely, but in the interest of full disclosure ;)

I'll put my neck on the line and say neither result will happen ;).

Also, the Serbia and Bosnia games both kick off later than the Irish game, so we will have to wait until after the final whistle to find out if we are seeded or not.

It could all come down to us hoping for a late French goal haha...

Beat Armenia (best away team in our group) think about this another day.

In footballing purist terms we dont deserve to be in the play offs Armenia do.

I must have missed the footballing purist convention when this was decided.

The fairytale story and underdog conventions also said Armenia going through would make a better story. It didn't rule out a France-Ireland repeat playoff either.

This basically means, in all likelihood, beat Armenia and we get seeded. Draw and we won't.

Another reason to go out for the win against Armenia. I hope we don't play too conservatively and hang on for a draw.

To be honest I feel more confident about some of the potential playoff opponents this time round, especially if we can get seeded. Although there's no team we'll be massive favourites against and it's sure to be tough whatever happens

Montenegro have come a long way for a new team. 2nd in their group for a new small population country is insane! I really wouldnt bank on certainly beating them away from home. I reckon we could take Belgium and Estonia (Estonia are riding their luck tbh, the fact the Nordies are at their most awful in about 8 years has helped them). Turkey, we would need to ensure a comfortable victory in Dublin (and as we all know high scoring victories arent Traps way). France would be great for obvious reasons but I dont want them, the team is still being rebuilt but they are without a doubt a stronger side mentally than the mess they sent to S Africa.

I really hope the Irish team know that if we win we will probably be seeded. After reading that South Africa thread though i have my doubts:confused:

we really don't want to get belgium they've a very good team these days.
kompany, vertonghen, dembele, defour, fellaini, hazard, lakaku and vermaelen to name a few..avoid at all cost imo

    1. They are beatable
    2. Would be an almighty piss up.

Thats usually the case as it gives them the advanatge going into the 2nd game.

Dont see why it would be any different for this playoff.

This article suggests that they will have a draw to determine home and away legs.

    http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro2012/news/newsid=1689808.html
The draw will define the four pairings as well as the order of the home and away ties. The first leg will be played on 11 and 12 November, and the return legs on 15 November.

Pretty sure the draw for the World cup 2010 playoffs was the same, they held a draw to determine home and away legs.

Taking off the Ireland hat for a sec, I really hope Belgium qualify for Euro 2012. So much talent in that team with the likes - Hazard, Martens, Defour, Witsel, Lukaku, Kompany, Vertonghen, Vermaelen, Fellaini, Dembele and De Bruyne.

One day Belgium like Spain finally did, will click. Hopefully it's with this current bunch of players.

Ireland to beat France in the play off with a Kevin Doyle hand assisted goal :D. Would you feel bad for cheating?

I think there's quite a few teams we could potentially play which pose quite a threat

    Belgium
    France
    Portugal
    Croatia
    Sweden

I wouldn't fancy us too much against any of those where

    Turkey
    Estonia
    Serbia
    Bosnia H
    Montenegro
    Scotland
    Czech R
    Denmark
    Norway

    would be more manageable

These eight sides will be divided in two pots containing four seeded and four unseeded teams respectively, in accordance with the national team coefficients established at the conclusion of the group stage. (Click here for the interim national team coefficients.)
The draw will define the four pairings as well as the order of the home and away ties. The first leg will be played on 11 and 12 November, and the return legs on 15 November.

    ???

Its says essentially that the seeded team plays at home second.

We'd be huge underdogs against each of those teams it's no comparison. Sweden would be the best to get but they have Zlatan Ibrahimovich ffs, nobody on the Ireland team comes close to him, if we could deny him the ball though we'd have a good chance. France would be the best out of the rest of them to get but I could see them comfortably putting us away, they'd have something to prove after the last time and motivation is really the only thing that group lacks.

If we drew Portugal we'd have no chance imo. Belgium are a far superior team to Ireland. Croatia can have some stinkers but have a squad dripping with talent so I wouldn't be overly optimistic.

the old irish habit of putting their own team down and building others up for no reason. Im sure them countries wont want to play us.

Your making Portugal, Belgium and Croatia to be Spain, Holland and Germany FFS

Look, if we don't beat Armenia tomorrow, it'll be seriously difficult to qualify via playoffs.

Portugal have Ronaldo and Nani. I for one shudder at the thought of either on Stephen Ward for 180 minutes.

Croatia have Luka Modric which gives them a midfield. 1 thing we don't have. And some pacy strikers with some guile as well. Massive threat.

And Belgium are the coming young team in Europe right now with the likes of Hazard, Witsel, Lukaku and Vermaelen at the back. They are my dark horses for this tournament if they qualify although it may be two years too soon.

Fact is we got the softest group going and these teams are better than us. It really isn't complicated, pragmatism is not a wrong thought.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,704 ✭✭✭G.K.

You are seriosuly underrating those 3 countries.

Portugal are an excellent team with some of the world's best, though admittedly not as good as they were 3/4 years back.

Belgium have a young team yes, but they ARE a great team, just look at the names they wield...

Croatia have plenty of talent too. Pletikosa, Srna, Pranjic, Modric, Kranjcar, Ratikic, Olic, Klasnic, Kalinic, Eduardo, Jelavic, Lovren, Simunic, Petric, Corluka... Ireland would kill for most of them. I know they can be inconsistent but that squad easily trumps Ireland's.

Why do people keep mentioning Belgium as a likely potential opponent? The odds are far more in Turkey's favour to make the draw instead.

not underrating them but realistic they are good but not great.

Croatia team only Olic, Srna, Modric, Kranjcar and Rakitic are top class players and first 2 are ageing. Struggled in a weak group as well

Portugal have Ronaldo and Nani thats it and maybe Meireiles, their main striker is Postiga and their defence is weak without Carvalho. More than likely will lose in Denmark on tuesday and Danes are no great shakes

Belgium are a great Football Manager team but what has Defour, Lukaku, Witsel and Verthongen done in real life. best players is Komapny and vermaelen and i think latter is out of play-offs. Also helped by being in a weak group except the Germans
