    Hey everyone,

For those of you that have read your emails recently, there's an email telling us that there's free software for us to download and use for the duration of our course. This involves the likes of windows 7 professional operating system, visual basic, visio etc etc. They seem to have EVERY piece of software out there by Microsoft apart from the ones people used 99.9% of the time?!

    Microsoft word? Microsoft Excel?

    WHERE ARE THEY?

These programs are a fraction of the cost of the specialized software like visit, visual etc too. I can't understand this at all?

I need Excel to do my lab reports but Trinity aren't offering it!

Because they make most of their money off people buying Office products, which people will get whether it's €10 or €100, as it's seen as a necessity nowadays.

    For a free alternative, http://www.libreoffice.org/download/

    For a free copy, torrent.

I think you will find that the software in question is made available under the scheme described here:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-ie/academic/bb250591

There are several links on the page below to suppliers offering Ms Office at student rates.

Excel, and all MS Office products are installed on pretty much every Student accessible computer in college, no?

Nice one, I've been meaning to get Visual basic for a while now.

Scratch that... Seems to be limited only to Electronic Engineering/CS students :(

    @jdouglassmith

Talking about reading your emails ?

use Google Docs in your Trinity email:

    docs.google.com/a/tcd.ie , create a new spreadsheet....

There's zero need to use a single Microsoft product while you're in college, so what the matter? [though I can't speak for visual studio]

Well what bugs me is that every student can get quantitative analysis software (SPSS) for free every year but nothing for qualitative analysis.

I know none of you care, but it's very annoying, considering a 1 year nVivo licence costs €145.

What bugs ME is that we don't get Xcode for free,(the latest version I mean)

I tried that download - it is only Office 2007 Service Pack 1, but you must have already have Office 2007 w/o service pack installed to use it.
