So are we going to have another ice age anytime soon or is it not possible with the way the earth is heating up due to global warming. Do you think in this modern day and age we would be able to survive an ice age if it did happen??

An ice age wouldn't be that bad, just wear extra layers of clothes, job done!

When the Gulf Stream shuts down due to melting Arctic ice Ireland, the UK and Western Europe will have a mini ice age.

I think it either happened last year last winter which was the first of it or else its going to start this year!? Definitely within the next few years if it hasn't started already!

Ice Age Due - not a great title for the 4th movie in the series

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,940 ✭✭✭4leto

No we are not, we are at the middle of the milankovitch cycle so its the middle of an interglacial period.

Would we survive, yes, would civilisation, probably, would the Earth support so many humans, no.

But by then we should be colonising other worlds its a very long way away.

There is absolutly no way that there will going to be a ice age in the near future giving that the earth's atmosphere has heated up over the last 200 or so years because of global warming.

Have you being living in the Stone age or something Op?!

Besides if there will be a new ice age coming soon there will be the tecnoligy in place to utilise the cold temperature and affectivly reverse the catistropic effect it causes.

Maybe the OP thinks the snow of last year was an iceage. I do believe we will be getting more of that this year, something to do with sunspots or in this case the lack of them.

There was the mini ice age that happened because of reduced solar activity for a long time even while "man" had already started climate change.

It's because of climate change that is causing Arctic ice to melt. That is releasing fresh water into the Atlantic reducing the salt water content which in turn will stop the gulf stream flow which in turn will make our climate here in Ireland like Alaska or Northern Canada for a very long time. It will be year long winters for a few hundred years at least.

I lived in Canada for 4 years. -20 puts a damper on the 'ol repopulation urges. Curling into a ball and whimpering while the car warms up is more the style - I remember doing a lot of that.

Red thermal longjohns - this years fetching look.

Say the uggs be around to stay for a while and for many more years to come if the cold weather has anything to do with the winter months!

They might be but they are so comfy and they can be cool if you put a bit of style and thought into when purchasing. Nothing like warm feet without feeling the cold! Like being snug bug in a rug.:)

An ice age would cause great hardship in many ways but the upside would be that you could leave your beers out the back in the open air and they'd be lovely and cold.

ESB staff will be delighted with an ice age on the way, gravy train how are ya :P

So yeh OP, if you believe an English scientist who correctly predicted the snow last winter is on its way again, stock up on your woolies! :)

If the gulf stream pisses of we'll have freezing winters but great summers. Roll on the day.

yeah well global warming is clearly a load of BS, how low did our temperatures get last winter? and its meant to be worse this year,
Our big freeze last winter was caused by high pressure over Greenland but on the "other side" of that high pressure- west Greenland and North East Canada temperatures were up to 8 degrees above normal. When its unusually cold in one place its unusually warm somewhere else. Theres no reason why this winter shouldn't be one of the warmest on record. Don't pay any attention to these "experts" who say we'll be buried in snow this winter!

and i dont pay attention to these "experts" ranting on about global warming either, sure there is global warming to some extent (there always is as its a natural phenomenon) but it isnt half as bad as these "experts" lead people to believe, its a money scam for people to buy green products

It might interest you to know that if the gulf stream switches off our summers will also cool down dramatically. After all, we are at 53 degrees north.

Compare Dublin with Punta Arenas (similar latitude):

    Dublin summer mean temp: 11
    Punta Arenas summer mean: 8

    Dublin winter mean temp: 6
    Punta Arenas winter mean: 4
