Im unemployed at the moment so i stayed in bed till 4.30pm today, i know its bad but i was up all night the night before.

Is there anyone else unemployed that does this, stay in bed all day then staying up all night? Ive no problem with mornings but just dont see the point in getting up early if ive fu*k all to do.

Also what do others do to fill there day if there unemployed?

I'd advise you to get out of that routine ASAP.

Seriously, get up at a reasonable hour and go for a walk to the shops or something.

Don't be silly. We're all the the bookies and the pub squandering our state handouts, remember?

    I too am unemployed.
And the time I usually get up at, and time I usually go to bed at, would make people laugh at me.

You just get into a rut...

Never understood this. What's the difference between getting up early and getting up late, if you've nothing to do? What is so great about late at night that entices people who have nothing else to do?

There's plenty of working people who'd be as well to stay in bed for all they fúcking do so rock on.

Personally, i'd end up depressed and cranky. Bit of fresh air, and a stiff breeze is where it's at for me.

I'm the same, terribly hard to get out of it. I often get a burst of inspiration and pull an all nighter to go to bed at a proper hour the next night and get up at 8am or whatever but eventually you get dragged back into the same old rut of staying up late and sleeping late.

Get involved in a volunteer project of some sort, it will look well on your CV and could give you an in on leadership roles and experience.

Exactly. You do get stuck in a rut and it's very easy to fall into a depression.

Thats the natural cycle I fall into. If I'm off work for a few days I start the cycle of getting up at 12 or 1 and staying up till 4am. I do it on the weekends too. It feels more natural than getting up at 6am and going to bed at 12. I prefare to work nights because of this, it's my bodies natural clock. So what when you get up or go to bed so long as you are getting a healthy 7-8 hours kip every 24hr cycle.

Doesn't matter what you do, but for the love of christ, you've gotta stop that sh1t! I know the temptation to stay in bed in the mornings is huge, but you're not doing yourself an ounce of good!

Get out of where you are, got to the library, visit and help some of the elderly in your area (god knows they would love the company, and you'd be able to help them no end).

I'm no expert, but I'd say you're on the road to full blown out and out depression (if you're not there already). Please try and get the fcuk out of your bed, especially as the days are going to get shorter soon, and it's just going to get harder. Even if you get up to post stuff here, believe me, there are plenty of people on here early in the morning to keep you occupied!

    I know what you mean.
And as a person who does it. I don't know.
All I know is from currently being on the social welfare if i got up a 8 or 9 every morning i'd be bored outta me head.

I know what you mean but once your in that rut, theres very little that can get you up in the mornin after a few hours sleep. If you dont HAVE to get up you'll convince yourself not to. And when your unemployed with shag all goin on its all too easy to convince yourself to stay where you are.

What's all this lark of not getting up in the morning leading to depression. What about everyone who works nights. I did it for a few months before last December and January, didn't get a day off in two months and didn't see the sun either. Didn't knock a tap out of me.

It makes no odds really..! You stay up late you get up late.. You go to bed early you get up early.. Whats the difference .. Obviously you need to see a bit of daylight at some stage but its all the same really, we live in a 24hr modern world so sleeping patterns are no longer dominated by daylight.

The problem is you should only be sleeping about 8hr or so ..?

Well you won't get a job by staying in bed 'til 4.30pm.

I got that routine too, can't get to sleep before 3am, up at 11 or 12.

Though in fairness, I get my 8 hours like everyone else, so it's not such a bad thing :D

I know a terminally unemployed guy who won't get up before 4 o clock. It's kinda strange being out and about and knowing I can't call him cuz he's asleep.

    College?

Missed the deadline this year so I'll be applying for next year. No leaving cert so have to apply as a mature student and with no experience or anything to back up my ability it wont be easy get in as I'd imagine there will be alot of people going for it.

I think it is so easy for ppl to fall into this rut. But try and drag yourself out to volunteer, even just twice a week, there is so much help needed in every community from people of all skills and it will make you feel better about yourself also.

Its pretty easy find a course somewhere as a mature student once you are not putting all you eggs in one basket e.g medicine at UL ;)

There is always places reserved for mature students, I dunno what you are planning on doing but try get a bit of experience now before you apply.

You're going to get stuck in a rut and depression will follow

You have to get out of that routine.
If you don't want to exercise, then at least go for a stroll in the mornings, do something

Gotta figure out what to do first before I attempt to get experience in it. This rut comes with more than sleeping problems. Keep thinking if I can find a bit of work to pay for a car and save a little bit I'd be in a much better position to go to college and I might even know what I wanna do or what I will be able to do. End up going in circles and before ya know it another year has passed and you've done fcuk all again.

Definitely need to get out of the house and do something.

When I was on the dole last year I used to get up at 8.30am every morning and go for a walk up to the park or go down to the library for a while.I remembered that museums and stuff were free too so I went to all of them aswell.Made a big difference even just being out around people instead of sitting on my own in my room or whatever.

I used to be in this rut,( yeh I know i'm posting at this hour) but seriously, you should get structure in your day, do volunteering 3 or 4 days a week in the morning for a few hours. It can be very enjoyable and you meet a good bunch of people.

I'm in a similar rut, finished college in May with a Degree and decided after 2 years asa mature student to take some me time and sort out some personal projects I had in the back burner.
Two months was enough, it's over 4 now, so 2 of trying to get a job. Endless rejection letters and only 1 phone interview from abroad. I'm ready to up and leave to Europe or somewhere. Deffo want to be gone by Xmas.

Mostly try to get up before 12.

Didn't notice much talk about drinking in this thread so far. I've decided to knock it on the head for October, at least until Halloween. Was seriously panging for a few tins this evening but resisted. This weekend is going to be tough but sure I'll save the money and buy a new shirt or two. (in case I ever do get an interview.)

You should go for a 2nd level foundation course then or PLC I think its called for the start of the next year as, this can qualify you for the FETAC or a degree course in 3rd level . Its a bit more practical and interesting than pre- leaving cert, you could do music, learn an instrument or do media studies, stuff like that.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

I go out maybe once every 3-4 months. Gave up cigarettes last new years eve. My main trouble is I live in the back arse of nowhere with no car. I couldnt go anywhere even if I wanted to which I dont most of the time anyway.

Got my theory test on tuesday, looking for a car now with the couple of grand I have tucked away. Hopefully soon my horizons might be a bit broader.

Ditto, I love it too. So much more time freed up and commuting times are far shorter which saves even more time and less stress.

I used to work 8pm-4 or 8am and it was fantastic. Never had so much free time to do things during the day and get to the bank without taking time off work. And the lack of traffic by avoiding the daily rat race is a huge plus. I used to work 4 nights per week and get paid more than doing a 5 day week normal hours plus have a ton more free time, win win all round. Wish I had more night work.

The 9-5 lark is over rated.

I'm rubbish at sticking to plans, I'll swear blind to you right now that I'll do this that and the other but this time tomorrow I'll have forgotten it or lost interest.

I tried two online courses but I dont have the discipline to get anything out them. I need a course I have to go to. Working on getting a car so night courses and other things will become an option then.

Yeah, it's actually called depression, it sneaks in without you knowing it and your routine gets screwed.

I find that waking up at 8am and sitting on my bed watching a documentary or whatever takes my fancy, at least keeps me awake. Then after this I will make a minor excuse to walk to the shop. Buy a chocolate bar, who cares, at least get out of the house for ten minutes before 11am. Then a bit of tidying or cleaning. Maybe an hour, amazing how much you can get done in an hour. Around 1pm the job sites are about as ripe as they'll get that day, so time to start searching and applying. Resist the urge to check Facebook and Boards first! This is more important! Ok I was unemployed during the boom once or twice so the job pages were rife with opportunity. I know now it's probably only one a day. Due to illness in the last few years I'm not strictly unemployed, I'm disabled, but I still have to make some routine that isn't sleeping all day and surfing all night. (Says she that's awake at half one - I'm an insomniac too).

I found grabbing the MP3 player and going for two hour evening walks very theraputic. Helps to keep up the exercise at a time when you can't afford the gym, jog if you're able, I'm not.

Any ideas you have, things you know could work, things you like to do, be it ideas for a small business, writing, art, crafts, anything you know you're good at, indulge it whatever chance you have.

I know it's hard to be bothered waking up in the morning, the night is kind more entertaining (always been a night person) but this routine will not help you. Believe me!

    Good luck OP!
