*Forum Suggestion* - Photo Gallery Discussion Thread ?

As the rules clearly state and well enforced in the Photo thread that there is to be no discussion/chat unless you post a photo yourself.

Imo I feel that this is a bit of a bad and silly rule as if you wanted to discuss something all you have to do is grab a photo from google + your comment regarding whatever.

If I may suggest a Discussion Only thread for photo's as a few other forums on boards have such as.

    Aviation & Aircraft: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056408400

    &

    Airsoft: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055220889

(These are the only two I know of but I'm sure there's more around)

I know Mods have stated before that if you want to discuss a photo you can start a new thread but to be fair there isn't much point for the sake of one or two photos and the thread dies after a few posts.

Would be greatly appreciated if the mods could take the idea on board. :)

    Thanks.

Agree with the above. I find its a bit restrictive that we cannot talk about the photos :o

Great idea - I see no reason why we cannot have a thread where we can discuss the pictures.

There will, of course, have to be some rules - for example, discussions can only be about pictures where are currently posted in the Gallery, pictures may not be posted on the discussion thread and so on.

Let me discuss it with the other forum mods in our super sekrit moderator's forum and I'll get back to you guys with the rules in a day or two, which I imagine will be very straightforward and few in number.

Kudos for the great idea! Watch this space for updates soon!

Yeah, a post can have a link to a photo in the picture thread and then a

    discussion about it.

Or even something along the lines of...... (I'll use KKV as an example)
    RE: KKV's last photo's..... [insert comment/question]

Can I propose a link back to the pick if we discuss it?

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=74444091&postcount=1038
or even a quote of the post with the changed to?

I doubt the mods would care or mind how someone distinguishes a photo you'd be referring to as long as you don't quote the actual photo itself. That's how it usually works in the other threads with similar set-up.

could we not just add discussion to the gallery thread?

To be fair, if we add discusion to the thread, rather than create a new thread, at least everybody, including those who have yet to discover boards, can scroll through and enjoy it.

If you've two threads, I predict it'd become very difficult to be able to enjoy the photos and the discussion as you'd have to keep flicking between the two threads and would be unsure as to what people were or were not talking about.

Also, you have a second thread that will only really be visited by people looking to ask something. So if Mister Jingles posts saying "KKV, is that a new Patrol car?", instead of me being able to see the comment and quickly belting off a reply, I have to leave the gallery thread and check and see if there's anything I can help with or respond to in the Discussion thread.

On top of that, is there likely to be enough discussion that a thread would be kept going and worthwhile? I mean, if it has to be actual discussion (as opposed to a lot of "nice shots" posts and other such stuff that you could just as easily 'thank' instead of commenting) then I'd imagine the posts that consist solely of photos will still heavily outweight any discussion anyway, so...

Just my thoughts (I've talked to a few people on here via pm about photos and such, so i realise there is a discussive side to the thread, but i do think that in the grand scheme of things it'd be fairly unsubstantial).

The problem with adding discussion the the Gallery Thread is that it gradually no longer becomes a gallery thread, and all it takes is one or two discussions about one or two pictures, and there'd be pages of posts without any pictures.

We're discussing the format of the thread, and one rule we're discussing will be that you must back-link to the picture you're talking about by using the method demonstrated by maglite.

It looks like there'll only be 3 rules, but we want to get the wording of the rules correct so there won't be any confusion on what is and isn't permitted.

We don't want to over-think or over-complicate this. It'll just be a thread for people to chat about the pictures. It won't be a thread full of "gud pix x" kind of posts, or any other similar "lol" waffle. It will be a thread to discuss the pictures. People will continue to show their appreciation in the normal way by 'thanking' the post containing picture(s) should they wish to do so.

I enjoy the photo thread and delve in once a month or so, but discussion in it can make it quite boring and tedious. There is a thread elsewhere on boards (Infrastructure I think) where it is impossible to browse through photos as there is pages of discussion making it quite tedious if you just want to look at the pictures.

Edit: Hence I obviously support the idea.... I liked KKVs picture of a jeep recently and had some small query - I wasnt going to start a thread for it nor would I just post some random picture to ask a question so it sounds like a great idea.

I'm sure this was one of the reasons why a separate thread was started in the Aviation forum there recently.

Well, if this thread is anything to go on, you'll be waiting a while for someone to get back to you. :P

On the way, some discussion on going in regards certain aspects and protecting the forum and boards.ie

    Shouldnt be too much longer

Can you no longer edit posts in that thread? I made a booby in one of my posts on the Vehicle Gallery and I can't change it!

Generally on boards you cannot edit posts a week after there posted

I'm sure whatever rules (or legislation :pac: ) are required to get this thread up and running can't be that difficult? Surely this thread would just fall under regular forum rules with an additional "please link to the photograph you're wanting to discuss so other users have a reference image" or such?

Can't help but notice that Romeo Sierra's two posts are largely made of images that were already posted in the thread before. :/

Noticed that myself. The indoor ones of the Izuzu 4x4 are new ( to me ) but the outdoor ones aren't and I don't think I need to say much about the Insigna as that photo has being going
    awhile now.

    bumpety bump

We hear you. This last week and the week before have been busy weeks for me, and I predict a busy week ahead too, but it's something we will get sorted hopefully very soon, hopefully within the next 7 days.

Any progress, or is this just dead in the water now I'm assuming ?

Didnt really read this, but Im sure just doing what they did in the Aviation & Aircraft forum would work just as well. One thread for the pictures, another for the discusison. Simple.

No not dead in the water......my apologies for the delay which was unduly long (my fault, sorry).

We had to discuss certain things so that replicating photos didn't take more space and crash boards.ie!!!

    So.....here you go
