€699. People won't be prepared to pay over €700 in my opinion

    I will be annoyed if it's 700+

The 16gb will be €600 or very close to it as per previous iPhones, so there is very little chance there will be only €100 between the 16gb and 64gb versions

€699 will be the price of the 32GB. The 64GB is likely to be in the region of €799.

    I'd say anywhere from €700 - €1,000,000,000,000 :D

iPhone 4 32GB was €729 at launch. So €799 seems like the kind of figure for this IMO. Considering that they're pitching the 8GB iPhone 4 at €500, the minimum premium on top is €100 for the 4S

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 545 ✭✭✭tigershould

sim free iphone4s prices (IMO) =

    16gb - 599€
    32gb - 699€
    64gb - 849€

this is based on iphone4 8gb at €499

£699 in the UK according to T3. More expensive than iPad 2 3G 64GB!

Edit. £499 and £599 for the other two 4S models.

I couldn't believe the price they're currently setting for the 8GB 4; the 32GB was around €649/669 only a few days ago. With the 4S now, that should also drop so the 8GB 4 seems OTT

Not, it wasn't. The 32GB iPhone 4 was €699 sim-free. You are probably thinking of the PAYG version.

These are the prices for unlocked iPhones here in Australia

    3GS 8GB- $449, (IE is e349)
    4 8GB- $699, (IE is e499)
    4S 16GB $799
    4S 32GB $899
    4S 64GB $999

So if I had to guess, I'd say Irish prices will be e559, e629 and e699

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭Jev/N

Unless my eyes were deceiving me that was definitely the price on apple.com/ie store within the past few days, not at launch - I know that was the price then

    edit: I'm 99% sure it stated €669

    *From the apple site
just to give an idea of the difference in prices between unlocked phones, the difference should be about 50-80 euros in ireland

How is the 64GB S cheaper than the 32GB S?

i'd say it will definitely 799 if last years keynote is anything to go buy, the 16gb and 32gb were 199 and 299 in the US on contracts and it's the same this year

Maybe I was thinking of another country. If that's the case, then my vote goes for €749, minimum.

    iPhone 3GS 8GB - €349 (confirmed on Irish store)
    iPhone 4 8GB - €499 (confirmed on Irish store)
iPhone 4S 16GB €629 (confirmed on German store)
    iPhone 4S 32GB €729
    iPhone 4S 64gb €799

As I said in the other thread, German and French prices do not reflect Irish prices. Their prices are more expensive than ours.

True; 3GS and 4 8gb prices are €20 higher. I guess that's to absorb some local recycling or anti-piracy tax on electronic goods? If the trend continues, we're looking at €609 for the 16gb 4S...

    iPhone 4S 32GB €729
    iPhone 4S 64gb €799

German price and Irish price for the 16gb may differ due to differences in the VAT rate.

    I would've thought the 16gb would be €599, 32gb €699 and 64gb €799 in Ireland.

Who in their right mind pays €800 for a phone. One that'll be outdated in a year. Forget the *99 stuff as it's only a marketing technique.

    Those are mental prices.

Sure the iPhone 5 will be out in a couple of months.

There are people who will pay that much, 800€ up front does sound like an appalling amount in isolation alright. But what you need to think about though, is the overall cost of using the phone, as in the initial cost plus network costs. The pint being, on 30 day contracts, you can get much better deals, and change plans at will, as opposed to being tied in to 2 year contracts. Often the price works out very similar. and, as far as i know, in Three's most recent free iphone contract offer, it was probable that it would work out cheaper to go with the contract. For some people, the thought of a 64gb iphone will be what they've been waiting for, for years. In fairness, it is the only phone to offer that level of storage without the use of micro sd cards

Well, it'll be June 2012 at the very earliest, or may well be September/October next year again, who knows..

just like everything else in this world, whay works for you, might not work for others.

the price for the iPhone from apple may seem high at the offset but if you factor in contract prices etc it may work out exactly the same.

    sim free 32gb = 699
24 months of PAYG top up at 20e per month = 480

    700 + 480 = 1380

    buy for 299 from network = 299
    24 months of 50e = 1200

    300 + 1200 = 1500

so not alot in it tbh, plus the PAYG option means you can sell it tomorrow if your having financial problems, moving away etc etc

Less of a prediction me thinks but the 64gb is £699 on the UK site. I hope I'm wrong but that puts it at a wild €800 here!

(edit) Confirmed - an even wilder €849 on the French store!

Quite pissed at the euro prices

    16 GB
    € 629.00
    --
    32 GB
    € 739.00
    --
    64 GB
    € 849.00

Why are the products in this world so expensive and have unreasonable prices.

    €849!!!!!

    That's fu*kin' ridiculous isn't it?
    Or am I missing something?

If you say €45 x 24 mths contract + upgrade price (probably €600/700 on a gold O2 maybe?) that's a whopping €1600ish in two years.

Just for interest, does anyone know how much it actually costs to manufacture one?

God bless you Steve, you sure knew how to make the money.

I saw a Bill of Materials estimate for the 32GB 4S of 203 dollars some where today. They're an incredibly profitable product for Apple.

Not defending the Irish networks, but your average iPhone costs them roughly 400 from apple, so if a customer gets it free then then the network begins to earn revenue back at about month 14.

I remember reading what an iPhone cost to make, can't remember what model but it was somewhere between 150 - 250 dollars I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,544 ✭✭✭Hogzy

€850, iPhones are nice, but they are no where near worth that money even if you end up paying it back through a 2yr contract.

Without getting into the whole Apple v Android debate can you Apple Fanboys really justifying paying THAT MUCH for a phone. I mean a 16gb Galaxy S II from Amazon is €450 delivered Sim free, add €50 for a 32gb SD card and its €500 for a 48gb phone that has the exact same features as an iPhone 4s (Some features are actually better), and android has had its own google voice for nearly a year and a half.

I have an android, i also have a head. Everytime i do the maths i just cannot justify why someone would pay that much more for a phone that is not that much better than its rivals (I personally prefer android but each to their own).

It should be kept in mind though that hardware manufacturing costs are not the whole picture. Those figures don't take into account other costs like marketing, R&D, support, shipping and software development. But the iPhone is undoubtedly very profitable. All their products are very profitable. If they can't make a profit from it they don't make it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,544 ✭✭✭Hogzy

I think you will find that most companies will do this :p

Not necessarily. A lot of companies sacrifice short term profitability in their attempts to dominate a market. I mean, have Sony started making a profit on the ps3 yet? The last I heard they were still selling it at a loss. Apple don't do this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,544 ✭✭✭Hogzy

The PS3 turned a profit for Sony in Q2 2010. Yes late i know but once the break even point has been reached then your profit will soar. If a company is selling a product at a loss i can guarantee you it will be making some sort of profit for the company indirectly.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,693 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

Yeah but my point is Apple don't do this. When Jobs returned he focused the company on achieving short term profit. This allowed them to spend more money improving those products and staying ahead of their competitors - not in terms of sales but in terms of innovation. But this eventually resulted in greater sales. This was key to Apple's success in the post-return years IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 526 ✭✭✭LuckyCharms

Following on from what was said above, i think it isnt something that can be compared like for like since Apple operate in a specific area regarding their phones while

Sony has so many different revenue streams interconnected that one making a loss is often done to allow for others to generate substantial revenue.

Apple do not have that kind of diversified portfolio to leverage. PS3 is more like the apple store than the iphone. Apple uses it's various products to leverage its consolidated music and app library but since itunes can be used by anyone, having an iphone is not a pre requisite to gain access to these revenue streams.
