Okay, folks. I need a favor.
Short of robbing a bank, I'm all out of ideas on how to make money. I need a new computer for college but I'm flat out broke and my DA just doesn't stretch to getting one on Flexi-rent.
If anyone has a decent idea on how to raise the cash (in before "get on the game", sell a kidney, yore ma, etc..) please let me know.

I'm sure you AHers will come up with some clever tricks! :pac:

Instead of making money, any chance you can save money by cutting costs?

    A €50 note and a copier.

    Sorry, what was the question?

Well, technically I'm on the dole (if Disability Allowene counts) and college leaves little time for a job seeing as it's 6am -5:30pm Monday to Friday. (Taking into account the commuting times)
Also, I just don't hate myself enough to go on the game and frankly, I'm rather attached to my kidneys.

That one about looking sad in a computer store seems legit, though...

You could work while you commute, I think bus muggings are due a comeback.

Is there anything you are particularly good at? eg: art, music, etc.

Exploit your talents for monetary gain. 'Tis the key to success.

If you're any good at writing go onto the likes of Elance.com, set up an account with paypal, and start bidding for various writing jobs. Taking a few of them can pay quite handsomely. Also signing up to Create Populis generally will allow you to write articles of 6 euro per 300 words.

Might take a while but it's pretty nifty.

Tried going the donation route before. It's too time consuming. I want money now!

How much does a basic computer cost?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,080 ✭✭✭McChubbin

Well, considering I'm doing a media-intensive course, I'll be needing a lot of memory, a good processor and a good graphics card. Also, I need something I can play video games on in my down time.

About €700 would be the asking price for a basic laptop with the specs I need. Don't ask me to go second hand because I need something reliable. Also can't beat that new computer smell.

You could get a laptop from Harvey Norman or another shop that lets you pay a small amount every month. It probably works out to be a good bit more in the long run but could be a good idea if you really needed the computer.

This one has been recommended by someone in the Laptop forum (someone in the college I'm going to has one, and it can run a PS2 emulator [which needs a sorta good computer - my crappy one certainly can't run it :L] and some steam games - no idea which he plays though) - I'm planning on getting it ASAP..

I've considered doing the whole Flexi-Rent thing but it would mean scrapping by on peanuts for the rest of the week. I might look into it again- there's going to be a sale on soon.

You know those bike, rickshaws (sp)? that you see around town. well hook up with an organic wholesaler of fruit, chutneys etc and sell door to door in affluent areas. Organicsonbikes, mixing organic foods with eco friendly delivery.

For an item valued at €700, the monthly repayment would be €19. Thats less than a fiver a week.

    1. Save up €300
    2. In late November go on ebay and buy up €300 worth of Weight Watchers books, diet plans, etc
    3. Put them up for sale on December 30 just before the annual New Years Resolutions rush. Expect profits of 75-100%- nobody diets in November so prices are low. Prices are much higher in the first two weeks of January
    4. With your €500-600 buy a laptop in the January sales when there's often bargains about

I have the same laptop 4gb though, got it upstairs in St Green for €450....

    psssst....

If you're living in our Fair Capital I'd recommend you jump on a bus to Dun Laoghaire and stopping off to pick up your guitar, get back on it. Now directly behind the bus driver will be sitting a scruffy looking gentleman. Don't let his appearance fool you, for he is wise. He will let you know exactly how to get rich quick and you'll be glad you weren't going that far.

Oh, really? I thought it'd be higher than that.
I've picked out a laptop at 449 euros- this one: http://www.harveynorman.ie/psc1ye-01r008en.html so I'll be off to talk to a sales rep soon. Wish me luck!

OP I was in the same situation as you this time last year. My PC cost me a grand!
But I have to agree with what another poster said and say sell shít you don't need.

Adverts.ie is a great place to sell stuff on. No charges or anything. You'd be surprised what people will buy. I made €400 last year selling stuff.

Start your own talent agency, specifically, The Hollywood Talent Agency.

You then charge A-list Hollywood stars 9% instead of the traditional 10%, and stars such as Leo DiCaprio and George Clooney will sign with you.

This will generate huge sums of legitimate money.
